Volunteers give their time, energy & resources to help make New Horizons a better place to

play.

Volunteer Appreciation in conjunction with

our July General Members Meeting.

Any members who volunteer are encouraged to stop by for a hot dog and a pat on the back for

a job well done.

We meet Tuesdays from about 10:30 to about 2:00 in the afternoon. We’re a friendly crowd who all share a passion for quilting and other fabric arts. Often we have lunch and catch up on the news of the time. If you’re a new member at the Centre drop by and check it out.

PEROGY MAKING

The Office

A man who says what he thinks is

called a bach-e-lor.

Well, with the close of another season of perogy making behind us we can say that it was successful despite weathering a few times with a few less volunteers than normal. Our regular steadfast group suffered everything from odd medical issues to a period where we lost about 20 volunteers to a nasty cold/flu bug that was going around. We persevered however and managed to continue to get out the hundreds of dozens each month. It’s rumored that Mike Michaluk and Jackie Wilson may not be returning next year. (Thanks to both of you for all your hard work) If you are a new member to the Centre this is an excellent way to dive into the mix, meet some

great new people and walk away feel-ing very involved. There are people to teach almost all the different aspects of perogy making. I bet between all the people involved there is probably over a 1000 years of perogy making experience between them. We are looking specifically for one or two peo-ple who are good at organizing to take the lead on this two day event, if you happen to be interested, call the office at 642-7909. Have a great Summer Everyone, Hope to see you back in the Fall!

A wife, arriving home from a shopping trip, was horri-

fied to find her husband in bed with a lovely young

woman. Just as the wife was about to storm out of the

house, her husband stopped her with these words:

"Before you leave, I want you to hear how this all

came about."

So he continued: "Driving along the highway, I saw

this young woman looking tired and bedraggled, so I

brought her home and made her a meal from the roast

beef you had forgotten in refrigerator. She had only

some worn sandals on her feet, so I gave her a pair of

good shoes you had discarded because they had gone

out of style. She was cold so I gave her a sweater I

bought you for your birthday that you never wore be-

cause the color did not suit you. Her pants were worn

out so I gave her a pair of yours that were perfectly

good but too small for you now. Then when she was

about to leave the house she paused and asked, "Is

there anything else your wife doesn't use any more?"

50th Anniversary A couple goes out to dinner to cele-brate their 50th wedding anniversary. On the way home, she notices a tear in his eye and asks if he's getting sentimental because they're celebrating 50 wonderful years together. He replies, "No, I was think-ing about the time before we got married. Your father threatened me with a shotgun and said he'd have me thrown in jail for 50 years if I didn't marry you. Tomor-row I would've been a free man!"

A Beautiful Women Age 3: She looks at herself and sees a Queen. Age 8: She looks at herself and sees Cinderella. Age 15: She looks at herself and sees an Ugly Sister (Mum I can't go to school looking like this!) Age 20: She looks at herself and sees "too fat/too thin, too short/too tall, too straight/too curly"- but decides she's going out anyway. Age 30: She looks at herself and sees "too fat/too thin, too short/too tall, too straight/too curly" - but decides she doesn't have time to fix it, so she's going out anyway. Age 40: She looks at herself and sees "clean" and goes out anyway. Age 50: She looks at herself and sees "I am" and goes wherever she wants to go. Age 60: She looks at herself and reminds her-self of all the people who can't even see them-selves in the mirror anymore. Goes out and con-quers the world. Age 70: She looks at herself & sees wisdom, laughter and ability, goes out and enjoys life. Age 80: Doesn't bother to look. Just puts on a purple hat and goes out to have fun with the world.

An old sea captain with one wooden leg, one hook replacing a missing hand, and one missing eye goes into a bar. The sailor sitting next to him says, "You're really in bad shape. What happened to your leg?" "I fell overboard," says the Captain, "and before my mates could pull me aboard, a shark bit it off." "Terrible," says the sailor. "And what happened to your hand?" "We attacked a man-o'-war," says the Captain, "and one of the attackees chopped it off with a saber." "Awful," says the sailor. "And how did you lose your eye?" "Seagull droppings," says the Captain. "Amazing," says the sailor. "I didn't know seagull droppings could put your eye out." "Can't," says the Captain. "But it was my first day with the hook."

"From birth to age 18, a girl needs good parents. From

18 to 35, she needs good looks. From 35 to 55, she

needs a good personality. From 55 on, she needs good

cash."

"Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. People grow old only by deserting their ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up interest wrinkles the soul." --Douglas MacArthur

Two Virginia rednecks go on a fishing trip. They rent all the equipment - the reels, the rods, the wading suits, the rowboat, the car, and even a cabin in the woods. I mean they spend a fortune! The first day they go fishing, but they don't catch any-thing. The same thing happens on the second day, and on the third day. It goes on like this until finally, on the last day of their vacation, one of the men catches a fish. As they're driving home they're really depressed. One guy turns to the other and says, "Do you realize that this one lousy fish we caught cost us fifteen hundred bucks?" The other guy says, "Wow! Then it's a good thing we didn't catch any more!"

The snow went, then came back for a short period. The Centre seems intact, a little bit of water seeped into some of the crawlspace but the fans have been

going constantly to dry things out.

The fan situation in both of the bathrooms has been dealt with once again. Rick’s Electric replaced both of the old fans with brand new modern, almost silent fans. The drywall was patched up and the area re-

painted to make it like new again.

The well water test report is pegged to the bulletin board for those who wish to peruse it.

Just a Reminder;

Next bus trip is scheduled for September 27, 28, & 29th to Spirit Lake. Keep an eye on the bulletin board at New Horizons for more information as it gets closer to the date. If you have any questions, please call Elaine at 642-9495.

The role of Treasurer ...

To maintain the Centre’s system of financial re-cord keeping.

Submission of various summary forms to Reve-nue Canada.

To be involved in the once yearly budgeting process for the Centre.

Some accounting experience would be beneficial in this role.

Board Position: Treasurer

During the next few months, as a New Horizons Member, you may get a call from Jackie or one of her Committee people asking if you might consider stepping forward to fill a board position at the Centre.

New Horizons Board of Directors is made up of 16 positions in total, 6 Executive and 10 regular.

All New Horizons Members who can volunteer their time in any of these roles are encouraged to seek nomination for the Annual General Meeting in October each year.

It would be wonderful to have several people to choose from for each of the roles.

If you feel you have a skill or the energy to contribute something meaningful to your Centre please consider run-ning for election in one of these Board positions in October.

If you are interested you can reach Jackie Poloski by leaving a message at the office.

The role of Maintenance…

Preventative maintenance and repairs to all

existing features of the building and grounds.

The Maintenance Director is in charge of hiring and supervision of cleaning and/or maintenance staff that are required.

The Office staff generally calls when there is something that needs looking after.

Generally, a person who is handy with tools would find this role fairly easy to handle. Don’t worry, we have plumbers and electricians to do the trade-type jobs.

Board Position: Maintenance

Common responsibilities to all the roles on the Board are;

Be prepared to attend as many of the regular Board meetings as possible.

Be prepared to enter a yea or nay vote after con-sideration of the facts on issues presented at meetings. (except President, who votes only if a tie)

Be prepared to fulfill the particular Directorship that you’ve chosen to the best of your ability.

The role of Secretary ...

Keep the minutes at regular and special meet-ings of the Board of Directors.

To read all relative general correspondence at meetings and, when necessary, prepare re-sponse at the direction of the Board.

Distribution of mail pertinent to Board members for action.

This role would be well suited to a person with good word processing skills, perhaps worked in office man-agement in a former life.

Board Position: Secretary

Could you be the next person to make a difference at New Horizons 55+?

We’re still at it! All types of music and songs. Come and give a listen if you’re in the neighborhood. Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

What you do today is important . . . you are ex-

changing a day of your life for it.

June is here and we want to wish for a happy, healthy and exciting Summer for all.

Just like our class name we have been moving to-gether to make changes to our class format that eve-ryone is happy with. Members submitted a lot of dif-ferent ideas and we voted and now have a wonderful blend of exercises, sets of Tai Chi and meditation. We welcome beginners at this time, and all in the group are supportive and helpful. Being part of a group can help you bring out your best qualities by encouraging you to grow and change.
