Boot• Short for bootstrap.

Bootstrap• Bootstrapping is the leveraging of a small

initial effort into something larger and more significant.

• In computer terms, to bootstrap the computer is to use a smaller program (the BIOS) to start the Operating System.

BIOS• Basic Input/Output System• This is the software – stored in ROM – which

starts the computer and bootstraps into the operating system.

Types of Boots• Soft or warm boot

– When you or some software (think updates and new installations) shuts the computer down and then immediately restarts it.

• Hard or cold boot– When you turn the computer off (shut down)

and leave it off for a minimum of 30 seconds (60 seconds is better!)
