feno means lighting that creates lighting experiences by combining both sides of light:before light and beyond.

feno before light and beyond

There are two sides to the physical phenomenon of light. It exhibits both particle and wave proper-ties and therefore conforms to two different models, both of which are essential for understanding the nature and behaviour of light. In actual practice, light also possesses two sides: an active side which involves its precise control, and a passive side which relates to the perception of brightness and color.

The technology and art of lighting – or in simple terms: physical qualities and emotions – are the parameters within which we work. These aspects belong together as inextricably as cause and effect.

We apply all our experience and know-how into each and every project, developing detailed solutions to meet the needs, visions and specific requirements of our customers, lighting artists and lighting designers. This calls not only for careful planning and the most advanced technical expertise but also an understanding of the aesthetic dimension of light so that ideas are converted into reality as successfully as possible. This is the basis for creating lighting phenomena that are not only impressive but also elicit emotional responses.

This brochure presents some of the main features of our work. We have selected a number of examples that will give you a good idea of what we mean by the phrase: before light and beyond.

Finding Solutions

Light is something very special; it is medium and content in one. It is no wonder therefore that new applications and design options are being created and tested all the time – new installations, stunning effects, subtle transitions …

And this is precisely where we have focused our attention – on developing appropriate solutions for a wide variety of lighting designs and situations. Whether an entire building needs to change imperceptibly from red to blue overnight or the color and intensity of thousands of lighting panels need to be individually controlled for a particular artistic installation, every project is a new and exciting challenge for us – and with every project we are adding to our experience and our expertise.

Electronics experts, IT specialists and engineers work closely together in our R&D department to design the necessary control elements, dimmers and software for the various projects and bring them to a state where they can go into production. Our aim is to achieve this in the shortest possible time and to react with a high degree of flexibility to any changes, while at the same time maintaining the highest standards in terms of technology and functionality. In this respect we have the distinct advantage of being able to channel the empirical experience from our production side back to the development process. Ultimately, all that really counts is what we can see and experience for ourselves – from idea to reality.

Production

Precision a Prerequisite

Light has an ethereal quality, not at all tangible. But the conditions needed to generate it are very much concrete and demand maximum precision. On the production side we therefore focus all our efforts on ensuring optimum quality in every detail.

In this respect, an advanced production facility is essential and we are ideally placed with our state-of-the-art plant in Oberhaching near Munich. This is where our team of specialists monitor every stage of the production process with the greatest possible care and attention. We demand the highest production standards, including final inspection and testing of each and every item that leaves our factory.

The results are high-quality products that are characterized by precision, reliability and durability and which of course meet all the relevant industrial standards and regulations. This is true whatever the batch size including special products for individual projects as well as for products that are manufactured for shipment to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Individual solutions

Every Project is Unique

Light is very much a law unto itself. Despite meticulous planning there are always a number of factors in any lighting project that are closely related to the specific properties of the space or object to be illuminated and which cannot be entirely taken into account in advance. From our experience with a wide range of spatial and architectural conditions, technical challenges and logistical arrangements we have developed an operational structure that enables us to tackle the specific requirements of each individual project with a high degree of flexibility. The quality management system at feno has been certified to DIN EN ISO 9001:2008.

We put together our teams on the basis of the detailed demands of the project and pay particular attention to setting up highly functional interfaces to all the relevant sections such as building systems and media control. For relatively complex projects we develop customized software pro- grams for visualization and fine adjustment on site. We accompany the entire process to final acceptance and also offer workshops and training courses for subsequent operation and main- tenance. No matter how important each individual aspect may be, the crucial thing for us is to have a complete awareness of the entire project so we understand the smallest technical detail in the context of the overall aesthetic effect.

Lentos Art Museum Linz

Lentos is one of the most important museums of modern art in Austria – for its exhibits and also for its architecture. The glass skin reflects the ambient light and gives the building a transparent, almost weightless character. This impression of weightlessness continues at night. Lentos starts to glow at dusk, seemingly absorbing the energy of the reddening evening sky. The color changes smoothly from red to blue, from blue to red … a living body of light in the nocturnal silhouette of Linz, mirrored by the black and silent Danube.

What appears to float like a Mozart minuet is actually based on a sophisticated and beautifully conceived »score« for light sources and control elements. The display is managed by a total of 116 feno signal converters which use the DMX protocol to control the brightness and color of the DSI luminaires integrated in the frame of the façade, until the sun rises the following morning.

Zug Station

Two slim structures, linked by a glazed façade, constitute the new station building in Zug designed by the Zurich-based architects Hornberger. The unusual depth and 3D nature of the architecture is further emphasized when night falls and James Turrell’s lighting installation comes into play. Flowing color-chases spread not just over the glass but along the inner façades of the narrowing concourse, accentuating the »perspective effect« of the lines as they appear to converge on a point away in the distance. With its constant color transitions and changing rhythms the light also gives the building a pulsating vibrant energy.

This work of art in light could only be accomplished if the concept envisaged by James Turrell could be put into practice quickly and flexibly. Thanks to a comprehensive control concept devised by feno and specially developed software that enables the lighting situations in the building to be visu- alized, the colors and sequences could be defined on site with the artist and put together in a seamless choreographic arrangement.

Hotel Castell, Zuoz

Hikers leaving Hotel Castell in Zuoz (Switzerland) on their way to the mountains soon come across a neat round brick building – a kind of medieval guard-house. Once inside, they are standing in a circular room with a circular opening in the ceiling. There is only one object they can see through this opening: the sky.

Gazing upward becomes a meditative act. Passing clouds weave abstract patterns, and as the sun sets the color of this window to the sky changes, little by little, until it is quite black. The light inside the room also changes just as imperceptibly, in a silent dialog with the section of sky, deceiving the eye with complementary colors … This highly sensitive interplay between natural and artificial light called for a control system of exceptional precision to translate twilight into accu- rate fading operations, intensifying the effect of this work of art. Visitors leave this cosmic chamber as if in a trance.

Galeries Lafayette Maison, Paris

The Galeries Lafayette Maison in Paris extends over five floors and 10,000 square meters and is devoted to the culture and cult of lifestyle. Visitors stepping into the atrium are welcomed into a fairy-like palace. Between the brightly lit columns and stairways new visions of light and color appear as if by magic in the glass balustrades on each floor – a sparkling canopy of stars, welcome messages in a wide variety of languages and the names of exciting places …

It is no coincidence that Ingo Maurer describes his dynamic lighting installations as a symbiosis of aesthetics, imagination and functionality. The delicate nature of the magical ornamental lighting conceals a complex design developed on the basis of advanced technology, all implemented with the utmost precision. Several thousand LEDs have been integrated in 150 meters of special glass with three separate control circuits; control is provided by a constellation of hardware components supplied by feno. In addition, feno developed project-specific programming software that not only guarantees reliable and accurate results but also enables the system to be commissioned quickly and easily on site.

Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost

Is it a ship? Is it a cloud? In the »old/new port« of Bremerhaven there is an unusual building offeringa trip around the world. The building, designed by architect Thomas Klumpp, houses the Klimahaus which was opened in June 2009. A tour takes visitors through different climate zones, along the 8 degrees east line of longitude. When evening comes tiny dots of light appear on the glass façade. These artificial stars get brighter and brighter, creating the illusion of a starlit sky combined with wind and water. Lighting designer Gerd Pfarré has successfully married aesthetics with symbolism in his concept of thematic connections.

Creating this nighttime scene on the 125 meter long and 82 meter wide building with its 10,000 square meters of glass was an enormous challenge in terms of programming and implementation. An in- credible sixteen kilometers of cabling were installed to connect the 2000 individually controllable light sources to the dynamic system. Software was written specially for this project to enable these huge quantities to be properly marshaled. So Bremerhaven now has a new landmark – a firma- ment on the glass skin of the Klimahaus.

»Anroidika Descending The Staircase« is the mysterious title of Angela Bulloch’s concept. A woman and a girl are coming down a staircase but the image is turned into an abstract movement by extreme »pixellation« (an allusion to Marcel Duchamp’s famous painting). What remains is a real staircase in the shop and a wall of cubic light modules. The constantly changing colors and configurations of these modules create a rhythmically pulsating zone in which the steps appear to dissolve into light.

The work of art is based on 252 pixel boxes, each one a 50 cm square housing three fluorescent lamps. The feno interface fi dmx-dali 4 signal converter, which acts as the interface between the DMX control system and the digital dimmable ballasts, enables any color in any intensity to be produced in any of the boxes – a kind of electronic palette for artwork in light for the 21st century.

House in a House, Hamburg

The trading hall in the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce with its classic arcades and colonnades has recently been transformed into an architectural landscape. In 2007 in the middle of this impressive space a five-storey office building designed by BEHNISCH ARCHITEKTEN was con- structed – light and airy, completely independent, and only now and again connected to the galleries of the historical late 17th century building by bridges.

The light inside this building within a building is also independent. More than 160,000 LED light dots, arranged in square modular panels, have been installed under the glass floors of each of the storeys. Lighting designers from the Nimbus Group specified that the light in each of the zones should be variable. In view of the quantities involved, this presented a special challenge for the reliability of the LED dimmers from feno. The complexity of the project also called for intensive consultation and on-site support. The entire process was one of precision and dynamics, and this seems to be expressed symbolically in a subtle effect – a wave-like motion of light that can be activated on a touchscreen and that looks like clouds passing over the LED panels.
