far margins were to be my main concentration area and Mark had kindly lent us a superb new Microcat so we could reach the area with pinpoint accuracy. Before fi shing though, we had a wander around to the far side to see what we could see. Oh my God! The marginal snags were alive with bloody great big carp and I would guess the average fi sh we were looking at were around 35lb+. There were even a couple of token catfi sh around 6ft long laying up too. How’s that for a boost to your confi dence?

Scurrying back round to the swim, I placed enough bait into the

boat to get a bite and sent it out there. I have to hammer home here that with fi sh of this size (70lbs+ being present) you need to use the terminal gear you most trust to do the job of landing them, so three rods were all sorted with di� erent baits but all fi shed on identical rigs. One rod was fi shed with red maggots, the middle one on fake corn and the fi nal rod was fi shed with Sonubaits’s Code Red boilies.
