Dear Members and Friends,

After the many celebrations and activities during our Centennial year, 2017 was a year to regroup and focus our energies on the impact we can have in our second century of stewardship. We are proud of our accomplishments since our founding in 1916 and want to ensure that we continue to play an important role in Bedford’s future.

At the end of 2016, the Board of Directors and staff engaged in several strategic planning exercises that helped us refine our vision for the next century. The result of this is a commitment to expand and engage the community’s appreciation for the rare and unique place that is Bedford. The properties we own and maintain are gateways to experiencing a connection to our past and to the small-town feel that matters more now than ever. Through our buildings, we bring history to life and life to history.

We are asking for your input to grow in value and remain relevant in these changing times. We would appreciate it if you would complete the short, anonymous survey on the last page of your Annual Report. If you prefer, you can go to our website and complete the survey there. If you are not yet familiar with the Bedford Historical Society, we encourage you to learn about the work we do and offer suggestions with your responses.

In the coming year, we will offer more programs and events to increase awareness of Bedford's history and promote engagement in the community. As our ancestors noted, "many hands make light work" and we could use a hand with events, education programs, museums, office support, research, curating, etc. Your commitment can be as much or as little as suits your time and interests.

Lastly, a word about membership. Although your participation in special events and campaigns allows us to expand our initiatives, ultimately, we rely on membership to maintain our landmark buildings, provide educational programs and community events, and to open our museums to the public. Because we do not receive any Town, County, State or Federal funding your membership dues are the foundation that makes our work possible!

Thank you for all of the ways you have supported the Bedford Historical Society through the years. If you are not yet a member, please join us and become part of a community that makes a difference.

Evelyne H. RyanExecutive Director

Peter HennessyPresident, Board of Directors

- Board of Directors -Thanks to our Board for their time, energy and commitment to fulfilling our mission and to our officers for their service and dedication.

• We welcomed Shawn Carmody, Anna Kenoff and Chris Pachios to the Board.

• John Horn relocated to Seattle and resigned after serving seven years. He joined the Historical Society as a volunteer and was elected to the Board in 2010. John chaired the 2011 House Tour, served on our Executive Committee and had been our Secretary for the past five years. His many contributions and generous spirit will be greatly missed.

• John Fink assumed the role of Secretary in addition to his position as Treasurer.

• Nancy Markhoff was elected Vice President.

• Tricia Swift, who served almost 10 years before retiring, added her special touch to every event to make it successful. She contributed her time, creative resources and planning expertise with Zen-like calm. Tricia continues to volunteer and co-chaired our fabulous Hoppfest this year.

• George Bianco retired after serving on the Board since 2012. He helped revise our investment policy, was a key member of the Capital Campaign Steering Committee and served as Vice President.

• The Board fine-tuned the results of several strategic planning sessions to prepare for our next century of stewardship.

Special RecognitionTwo Legacy Awards were given at our Annual Meeting

• Kurt Harrison was recognized for his outstanding leadership and significant contributions to the preservation of Bedford. Kurt served the Board for eight years and was the Chair of our successful Centennial Capital Campaign.

• Ben Branch also received a 2017 Legacy Award in recognition of his exceptional service and dedication to the preservation of Bedford. Ben has been involved with the BHS since 2000 as a Board Member, Properties Committee Chair and Historic Properties Consultant. During his time, he oversaw significant preservation work at the School House, Historical Hall, the Jackson House and the Lounsbery Building as well as handling many smaller projects and ensuring that we were following the best practices for preservation management and techniques.

- Properties -

Jackson House: Restored the masonry joints along three walls in the basement using period appropriate mortar and technique. This has reinforced the foundation walls and helps keep the basement dry.

Historical Hall: Upgraded the bathrooms with new sinks and lo-flow toilets l Installed 26 new shades l Replaced one compressor unit with a new one with environmentally safe coolant l Re-screened the floors with an extra coat of polyurethane to extend use.

Post Office: Completed the design for lighting and furniture replacement in the lobby. These improvements will be installed in 2018 after the bidding process. Repaired and painted the Community Bulletin Board.

School House: Re-glazed, primed and painted the windows, doors and trim. Repairs to the rotted areas of the cupola will occur in 2018. The bell has been removed to prepare and repaint it.

After completing three major projects in 2016, we utilized 2017 to assess future priorities and determine the most prudent use of our financial capacity to achieve our preservation goals.

Rich Carpino, our talented jack-of-all-trades Property Manager, built and installed the new bulletin board at the 1787 Court House which was designed by Thomas O'Brien of O'Brien Architecture. l Former Board Member Melissa Fleming plants and maintains the gardens in front of the Post Office and Lounsbery Buildings l John Chiarella and Ultimate Service Grounds Maintenance continued their generous tradition of mowing the field behind the Bedford Oak as a gift to the Historical Society and the Town.

- Properties We Preserve -The Bedford Historical Society was founded by nine community-minded residents who answered Bedford’s first call for preservation – to save the 1806 Methodist Episcopal Church on the Village Green, now known as Historical Hall. In the 100 years since, the Historical Society has acquired seven additional historic properties — the Jackson House (Brittany Bromley Interiors), The Bedford Store, the Bedford Free Library, the Post Office, the Lounsbery Building (The Horse Connection), the School House, and two acres protecting the Bedford Oak — to ensure their preservation for future generations. In addition, the Historical Society is the steward of the 1787 Court House and the Sutton Clock Tower for the benefit of the Town.

- Centennial Events -- Education -Students Step Back in Time with Our "Footsteps in the Past" Program

After meeting on the Village Green for a brief history of Bedford's founding, students get a taste of life in old Bedford with a class at the 1829 School House, a trial at the 1787 Court House, a visit to the Bedford Museum and an interactive presentation on artifacts at the 1806 Historical Hall. Without the many volunteers who help bring history to life, the tours wouldn’t be possible. Many thanks to Parker Gilbert, Peter Michaelis and John Stockbridge for their participation as Constable and Justice of the Peace and Patty Kiernan as School Mistress at the School House. Thanks to Tour Guides Lisa Brotmann, Marilyn Brotmann, Kirtley Cameron, Paula Desperito, Mimi Freund, Deborah Frishman, Frank Geiger, Jane Hickey, Carolyn Nielsen and Jenny Weisburger.

New "Second Saturdays" Tours of Historic Bedford Village

We introduced a new, guided historical walking tour through the Village led by Executive Director Lynn Ryan. Members can enjoy the tour as part of their member benefits or the fee is $10/participant. The tours will resume in May, please visit our website for more information.

Friends, neighbors and members joined us for our Annual Meeting Wednesday, May 24th at Historical Hall. Executive Director Lynn Ryan welcomed all and noted that the Historical Society was founded in 1916 to preserve the Hall. "It seems only fitting that we are celebrating our 100th Annual Meeting with a discussion about preservation by one of New York's leading experts on the topic," Lynn added as she introduced Raymond Pepi, President and Founder of Building Conservation Associates, Inc.

100th Annual MeetingProfiles in Preservation: Restoration of St. Patrick's Cathedral

Raymond presented an informative slide show detailing the three year, $177 million restoration of St. Patrick's Cathedral, one of New York City's national historic landmarks.

The evening included remarks by Board President Peter Hennessy and the election of new Board Members. Ben Branch and Kurt Harrison received this year's Legacy Awards for their passion for preservation and numerous contributions to the Historical Society.

- Events -

Celebrity designer, TV personality and author Thom Filicia and Veranda Magazine's Editor-in-Chief Clinton Smith swapped stories and shared design insights at our sold out Refined by Design House Tour on Thursday, May 18th. More than 150 guests filled the tent to enjoy the talk and magnificent luncheon. The Village bustled as guests toured the historically significant homes, buildings and shops that give Bedford its unique charm.

We are grateful to our Board Member and Events Chair Mimi Freund for both her vision and the exquisite execution of this memorable event. Her committee of Courtney McGinnis, Brittany Bromley and Cyndi Azima contributed their time and talents to help create the fabulous day. Many thanks to the homeowners who allowed us to enjoy their lovely properties, to the many volunteers who helped in all of the buildings and to the McGinnis family for hosting the talk at the Benjamin Hays Tavern.

Refined by Design - Old Houses: New Style - House Tour and Talk with Thom Filicia and Clinton Smith

Thank you to our generous sponsors who made the House Tour and Talk possible: Clover Design, Design Within Reach, Ginnel Real Estate and Trinity Sports Holdings. "Merci" to Maison Privé and La Maison Fête for the glamorous decor, delicious food and beautiful presentation!

We screened several films at Historical Hall with the Bedford Playhouse including The Bullish Farmer featuring Outpost owner John "John Boy" Ubaldo. We also co-hosted a "Spooky Tour" of the Old Burying Grounds with Bernadette Durham, owner of Red Fox Gallery, and the Friends of Bedford Burying Grounds.

Collaborations

More than 150 guests enjoyed a memorable evening at Timberline in Bedford Hills on Saturday, June 24th. The weather was glorious and there was an amazing assortment of food and drinks on hand to please every palate. The two piece ensemble provided background music while friends and neighbors mingled and enjoyed the spectacular views from the upper deck and lawns.

Thanks to all who attended and to our wonderful and generous hosts, Mimi and Peter Freund. All proceeds will benefit our Preservation Fund which helps us maintain the historic properties in and around Bedford Village.
