BECOMING MYSTICS AND PROPHETS

Mystics are those who live and love deeply,

seeing the spark of God in all. Prophets are

those who call us to live life to the fullest. Their

lives speak a truth which changes the world.

Hearing the stories of mystics and prophets will

call us to be all we are meant to be.

ALL PROGRAMS PRESENTED TWICE:

Mondays, 10:00 - 11:15 am and 6:30 - 7:45pm

Freewill Offering

Abraham Heschel: “Prophet of the Prophets”

Born in Poland in 1907 and escaping the Nazis to come to New York, Abraham Heschel’s life led him to become one of the leading Jewish theologians and philosophers of the 20th century. Active in the Civil Rights Movement, he marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. at Selma and protested the Vietnam War.

In his book The Prophets (1962), he wrote that God gives the prophet God’s own heart of mercy and compassion and intolerance for injustice. The prophet must be the voice of the voiceless.

Presenter: Rabbi Ronald Shapiro

Bartolomé de las Casas: “Protector of the Indians”

Bartolomé de las Casas (1484-1566) was a 16th century historian, social reformer, Dominican friar, and missionary. He was the first to expose the oppression of the Native peoples by the European conquerors in the Americas.

His story is one of on-going conversion of heart as he grew in compassion when confronted with the way the Indigenous people were treated in the New World. What is his message for us today?

Monday, October 30, 2017 Presenter: Diane Poplawski, OP

St. Catherine of Siena: Standing up for Truth in her Times

St. Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) lived only 33 years, yet she influenced her times by speaking out about injustices she saw in her country and in her Church. For Catherine, love of God meant action and standing up for the truth she knew in her heart. Catherine wrote to the Pope; rescued an incarcerated man from execution; and served the poor, the sick, and the imprisoned. She saw her life as righting the wrongs she encountered for the love of God.

We are happy to welcome Nancy Murray, OP, who will portray Catherine and her radical life of being both mystic and prophet.

Monday, November 27, 2017 Presenter: Nancy Murray, OP

St. Josephine Bakhita and Continuing

Enslavement through Human

Trafficking

Josephine Bakhita was born in Sudan in 1869, enslaved as a child, and sold to an Italian diplomat. Years later she was brought to freedom through the Canossian Daughters of Charity and later became part of their community.

In 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized her. He said that her life is an inspiration to all to work for the freedom of girls and women who experience violence and oppression and the slavery of human trafficking—until all reach their full human dignity and live in freedom.

Come learn about her life and become more aware of the realities of human trafficking in our day.
