Lesson Overview: Learning To Compare & Contrast

In the last three lessons, we learned to look at individual charts to deepen our self-understanding. We used the 3-Part Puzzle technique, linking custom keyphrases, to put together a rough portrait of ourselves (and probably our friends, relatives, coworkers and romantic interests!).

In Lessons 2 and 3, we isolated specific planets and houses to examine prosperity and love. The Prosperity Planets & Houses revealed clues to career path and life purpose. The Love Planets & Houses showed what we need from a relationship or prospective partner.

In this lesson, we take our learning a step further and study the interplay between TWO charts. After all, we don’t live in a bubble. We need to coexist with all types of people—not always an easy task! This is where astrology comes in especially handy. This week, learn the tricks to getting along with anyone...even that person.

Here’s what we’ll learn in Lesson 4:

1. The 2 Types of Relationship ChartsThere are two ways of studying the interplay of two charts. The “combined” (composite) method or the “comparison” (synastry) method. In this lesson, we’ll look at both types of charts.

2. The Distance and “Aspects” (Angles) Between The PlanetsAre your Love Planets an easy or a challenging distance from your partner’s? Do you and that difficult client have clashing Mars or Mercury signs? In “The Secret of Distance,” we reveal a system for understanding how to find your sweet spot and where you might rub each other the wrong way. By understanding this, you can direct your energy toward the beneficial parts of your relationship, and avoid stepping in the same pitfalls or pushing each other’s but-tons.

2 Types of Relationship Charts: Combine or Compare?

Here are the 2 types of relationship charts we’ll study in Lesson 4:

1. Combined Method (Composite) — Where 2 Become 1

In any pairing, we believe there are three entities involved: you, the other person, and the relationship itself. Whether it’s a romantic coupling, a friendship, joint business venture, or a creative collaboration, when two people unite, the relationship takes on a life and personality of its own.

A composite chart is a special chart that’s created by finding the exact midpoint between each planet in your chart and each planet in another person’s chart. In other words, it represents the middle ground between the two of you. Where do your signs intersect, or meet in the middle?

You could think of the composite chart as a care and feeding manual for your relationship. Just like your individual charts, your relationship has a sun sign, moon sign, North and South node. What unique needs must be tended to in order to keep your union thriving? The composite-midpoint chart can reveal this!

We use the incredible (and for the time being free) tools of astro.com for running composite-midpoint charts. We also recommend the incredible SolarFire software from alabe.com.

Step-by-step instructions for how to run a composite chart using astro.com are included in the Appendix at the end of this lesson.

2. Comparison Method (Synastry) — Side-by-Side Snapshot

The comparison method is a side-by-side comparison of two charts. These are always called synastry charts. There’s so much to study here that we can’t possibly cover it all in this class. But we’ll touch on some of the essential comparisons in the second half of the lesson. The distance between your planets and another person’s can tell you so much about how you’ll relate. For example, if you have an Aries moon and your partner’s moon is in Gemini, your moon signs form a “sextile” angle. Sounds pretty juicy already, doesn’t it? We’ll explain what the heck that means and a lot more in today’s lesson.

PART 1. Combined/Composite ChartsWhen we combine two charts, what we’re really doing is “averaging” the planets between the two of them. You input both people’s data (we use Astro.com for this—step-by-step instructions included in this lesson). Then, the handy software calculates the midpoint between all of your planets, spitting out a single composite (or combined) chart that captures the essence of this relationship. It’s like your charts mated and had a baby...or something like that!

The composite method creates a third chart—one that’s a blend between the two charts being studied. Many people believe that relationships are like a third person (“there’s you, me and the relationship,” as the saying goes). The com-posite chart shows the spiritual potential—and the challenges—of joining forces with another person.

The results can often be surprising! For example, let’s say one person’s Sun is in Aquarius and the other’s Sun is in Sagit-tarius. These are both free-spirited, easygoing signs on their own. However, if we do a composite chart, there’s a good chance they might average out to have a composite Sun in Capricorn, which is the sign right in between Sagittarius and Aquarius on the zodiac wheel. So while you might be party animals on your own, together you adopt the hardworking, goal-oriented traits of a Capricorn. Who knew the fiesta would fizzle out so fast?

(Note: the averaging takes into account the zodiac sign degrees of each planet. So if one person’s Sun is at a very late or early degree of a zodiac sign, that will definitely impact the composite chart’s results.)

The Brangelina Chart:Their Sun Q is in compassionate, charitable Pisces c in the 6th house of service

Their Moon W is in dreamy, romantic Pisces c in the 5th house love

Their Venus R is in marriage-minded Libra j in the daring, adventurous 1st house

Their North Node { is in traditional, giving Virgo h in the benevolent 12th house

Their South Node } is in soulful-fantasy-driven Pisces c, which is also the sign of clandestine affairs.

No wonder their relationship got off to such a tabloid-worthy start…and no wonder they couldn’t keep their hands off of each other on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

PART 2. Comparison/Synastry ChartsIn comparison charts, we compare the planets in your chart and the other person’s chart. We lay the charts side-by-side and analyze where, for example, the moon in your chart is versus the moon in someone else’s chart.

The relationship between these two planets in question can determine your interpersonal dynamics. Will you get along smoothly or need to compromise? Below, our recommended planets to observe for various relationships:

Planets for LOVE Comparison:My Moon W Your Moon W What do we both need to feel safe?

My Venus R Your Venus R What attracts us/turns us on?

My Mars T Your Mars T Are we sexually compatible?

My North Node { Your North Node { What are our life lessons?

The Secret of Distance: How To Compare Your Charts

So, what does the comparison between two planets mean, anyway? To determine this, we look at the angles formed between the two planets in question. If your Venus is in Cancer, for example, and your partner’s Venus is in Libra, what does this mean? Will your dynamics be easy or challenging? The distance between the two zodiac signs will reveal!

In fact, these angles are so important that they even have names. In this lesson, we cover the 7 major angles (also called aspects) and teach you the basics on how to navigate their dynamics.

Aspects represent different energies, some easy and others challenging. Often, there’s a mix of both in compared charts. Discovering where things are easy can help you play to those strengths. And finding the rough spots shows you where you can improve. These are the aspects that we’ll study in this lesson (described in more detail on the next page):

q = CON = Conjunct (Same Sign) ------> Blending

i= SSX = Semisextile (1 Sign Apart) ------> Friction

t= SXT = Sextile (2 Signs Apart) ------> Ease

r= SQU = Square (3 Signs Apart) ------> Tension

e = TRI = Trine (4 Signs Apart) ------> Harmony

o = QNX = Quincunx (5 Signs Apart) ------> Adjustment

w = OPP = Opposite (6 Signs Apart) ------> Balance

Hard Vs. Soft Aspects (Angles): Challenge or Ease?The aspects are said to be of two types: soft (easy) and hard (challenging). While you might think it’s better to have more soft aspects, that’s not necessarily true. Soft aspects can make things come a little too easily—preventing us from building character through struggle. A good mix of soft and hard aspects is ideal. However, we get what we get! A per-son with a lot of hard aspects may have to pay more dues or overcome a bit more adversity to reach her destiny.

The Secret of Distance: 7 Major Angles & Aspects

Distance Energy Description SymbolSame SignCONJUNCT(0˚ angle)

AcceptanceBlending

When two planets are in the same sign, they double their impact. Wonder-twin powers, or too much of a good thing?

q

1 Sign Apart SEMISEXTILE(30˚ angle)

FrictionDifferences

Two planets that are a sign apart have nothing in common. However, like next-door neighbors with totally different styles of decorating, they can learn from each other—as long as they don’t invade each other’s turf. Inconjunct planets won’t coex-ist easily, but they can act as ambassadors and teachers for each other.

i

2 Signs Apart SEXTILE(60˚ angle)

FriendshipEaseCoexistence

This friendly, easygoing aspect doesn’t move mountains, but it adds a nice touch. Two planets that are sextile are like best friends who let each other shine, and work together easily.

t

3 Signs Apart SQUARE(90˚ angle)

TensionPower StrugglesCompromise

In this aspect, two planets form a harsh 90-degree angle. The energy is like a tug o’ war, filled with dynamic tension, competition and the ultimate need for compromise. Square planets are like “frenemies,” on-and-off friends who can also be exciting rivals—and dueling divas!

r

4 Signs Apart TRINE(120˚ angle)

HarmonyEaseFlow

Lucky triangle! The flowy trine angle brings effort-less ease between two planets. A trine generally occurs between two planets of the same element (fire, earth, air or water). Trines show harmony, but also where we can get a little lazy when things come too easily to us.

e

5 Signs Apart QUINCUNX/INCONJUNCT(150˚ angle)

AdjustmentKarmaDifferences

Just like the semisextile (1 sign apart), two quin-cunx planets have nothing in common. There’s a need to bring together two vastly different ener-gies that can have little in common. Each will need to adjust or adapt to the other’s unfamiliar, even alien, style of doing things.

o

6 Signs Apart OPPOSITE(180˚ angle)

Compromise BalancePartnership

Opposites attract—and repel! Two planets in opposite signs can make a great team. However, they will need to balance their strengths to avoid polarizing each other.

Orbs: Measuring Degrees Between The Planets The distance (measured in degrees) between two planets is called an ORB. The smaller the degree between two planets, the closer together they are—and the more likely they are to blend their energy.

Example—let’s compare the Moon signs between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: Brad Pitt has MoonW at 22 degrees Capricornz Angelina Jolie has MoonW at 13 degrees Ariesa

To calculate the orb between their moons, we subtract the degrees of one moon from another. 22 degrees (Brad) -13 degrees (Angelina) = 9 degrees.

If we look at our secret of distance guide, their Moon signs are 3 signs apart. This is also known as a SQUARE, the angle that represents friction, conflict and dynamic tension.

Well, they did fall in love while filming a movie where they played husband-wife assassins trying to kill each other (hello, square!). However, the 9-degree orb between their moons lessens the intensity of the square in their real rela-tionship. They may still feel the effects of the square, but perhaps more in a sexy, playful way than a tense one.

When Is An Orb An Aspect?When two planets are within an orb of 0 to 5 degrees (stricter astrologers only an orb of 0 to 3 degrees), they are said to officially form an aspect. In other words, they’re close enough together to interact in a meaningful way. The closer the planets are in their orb, the more powerfully they work together (or against each other!). It’s like living or working in close quarters with another person—or being neighbors versus living in different countries Two people who share an office or home have to deal with each other’s personalities—either irritating each other, or blending their strengths.

Wide Versus Tight Orbs:Astro-jargon: An orb of greater than 5 degrees is often called a wide orb. An orb of 0-1 degrees can be called a tight orb.

In the example below, Brad and Angelina’s moons are 9 degrees apart, a relatively wide orb.

CASE STUDY: BrangelinaBrad Pitt has moon at 22 degrees, Angelina’s is 13

degrees Aries. Though they are a SQUARE in distance,the wide orb of 9 degrees lessens any stressful impact that a square can present.
