Some thoughts about Chaplaincy

by Captain Dr. Gary Barkman

I write to offer you an introduction to the ministry

of chaplaincy with the DILN, either as a career

path in full-time chaplain role, or in addition to

other forms of ministry. Students will consider a

theological basis for chaplaincy and learn the

history of chaplaincy in the United States of

America. Students will be introduced to the many

places chaplains serve and understand the

requirements for becoming a chaplain.

Denominational endorsement for chaplaincy

service requires theological education and experience commensurate for the ministry

context.

The course(s) you will take provide an overview of the nature and history of chaplaincy

ministry, including the chaplaincy’s identity, purpose, and ethical and legal parameters. You

will examine the Biblical and Theological foundations of a ministry of presence, which often

comprises the core of chaplaincy ministry.

You also will study the various types of chaplaincy ministry and explore their commonalities,

distinctives, and expectations. Additionally, the course(s) will develop a professional

comprehensive range of biblical-theological knowledge, skills and abilities for ministry

leadership in Chaplaincy. Supplemental areas of expertise will be introduced at a basic level

focusing on specialized skills in pastoral, caregiver and emotional/spiritual support for a

Chaplain. The emphasis is to develop a basic understanding of how chaplaincy has the

opportunity to impact organizations with the Gospel message in military, institutional and

organizational communities.

Sincerely, For the saving of souls at any cost

Captain, Gary W. Barkman, Ph.D., D.C.C., Th.D., D.Min.

ABOUT CHAPLAINS AND CARING

Chaplains are usually pastors with specialized training who serve in institutional settings, such as prisons,

hospitals, hospice, long-term care, counseling centers, industrial and workplace and military installations. As

specially trained ministers of the gospel, they seek to encourage others in their relationship with Jesus

Christ. They seek to minister to the whole person, addressing not only a person's spiritual needs, but also

their physical and emotional needs.

Chaplains operate at the cutting edge where ministry and social structures intersect. They commit

themselves to being available to those who are suffering, alienated and confused. They struggle with those

who have perplexing questions about suffering, death, and the meaning of life. Chaplains offer resources

and guidance that lead towards spiritual renewal and reconciliation with God.

Chaplains provide a caring, human environment in which spiritual guidance can be provided. In so doing

they are a part of the professional team within the institution. The duality of serving both the church and

institution is key to understanding the challenges and opportunities for this specialized ministry.

The Office of Chaplaincy and Care Ministry supports and develops chaplaincy by:

recruiting and assisting prospective candidates through their specialized training

endorsing chaplains and their ministry

supporting chaplains and their families

maintaining links between chaplain and the church through conferences and newsletters

promoting chaplaincy ministry in the church and community

participating in national/state/provincial chaplaincy organizations

educating the church about institutional ministry issues

Staff are available to provide the following resources:

consultation to persons interested in chaplaincy

supporting the development of ministry opportunities

speaking to churches and organizations about chaplaincy ministry

connecting chaplains with churches for speaking engagements or education

A Message from the President:

The American Association of Christian Therapists

Dear Pastoral & Christian Counselor: Greetings in the Name of Christ!

Why be certified? The public demands it. The Christian public has a right to require some level of training

or proficiency, or at least to know a person has been trained properly if he/she has a wall document that

reads, Professional, Certified, or Licensed. To some extent the word Certified doesn't eliminate some of the

questionable practices in our Christian counseling ranks today, but with the high standards of the AACT we

have a good beginning.

The AACT does not compete with state licensing. In fact we recommend that you pursue state licensing.

We do however offer an alternative for those "Pastors" and other Ministers who choose to make counseling

their "ministry" and cannot for some reason pursue state licensing.

Page 6: Become a Certified or Licensed Christian Chaplain - … · Become a Certified or Licensed Christian Chaplain Training Certification Membership & Credentials ... I write to offer you

We encourage you also to check in your state to determine the use of the

words "clinical," "Therapist," and the term "licensed." If your state does not

allow you to use these terms you need to know this information. We offer

here at this website these and other guidelines that outline membership,

registration, certification, and licensing requirements at all levels of ministry.

All of these suggested guidelines are intended to offer opportunity for growth

while insuring competence in the area of pastoral care, counseling, and

therapy and protection for you while you serve our Lord in your Pastoral

Counseling Ministry.

All Membership, Registration, Certification, and Licensing, is applicable to Pastoral Care, Counseling, and

Therapy performed under the covering of a church, ministry, or other religious non-profit corporation.

Proof of organizational or professional liability insurance is required prior to the first anniversary date for

level of Registered Pastoral Care Provider, and above.

A.A.C.T. now strongly encourages all members be either licensed or ordained ministers. This is for your

protection. If you are not licensed or ordained, we can suggest a fellowship or church through which you

may become licensed or ordained. (the E.C.C. is a part of Dayspring Ministries International, as is the

A.A.C.T.). This standing is also required by the first renewal anniversary date for all members. (See

requirements for ministerial licensing and ordination. http://eccdayspringmi.com)

The information we send you, or that is presented on this website, will help answer many of your questions.

Although AACT will be celebrating it's 10th

birthday in 2005. In its growth through the last 10 years AACT

has become the recognized pace-setter in the field of Christian Counseling Certification throughout the

world.

Please take the time to CHECK US OUT . After you have studied all of the information, please complete

the application form on this website, or the one you have received in the brochure we have sent, and mail it

to us. Once we receive your completed application and your membership fee, we will contact you by email

or phone.

Sincerely, Because of Christ

Dr. Gary Barkman, President, AACT

Covanant of the Evangelical Christian Church

Dayspring Ministries International in knowledge, holiness and comfort; to promote its spirituality,

ministry and mission; and the spread of the Gospel throughout all nations.

We further engage to abstain from a lifestyle that is contrary to the Word of God. We engage to abstain

from unlawful actions, illegal activity, and ungodly behaviors and seek to walk in the Spirit and not in the

works of the flesh. (Galatians 5:19-21) We will not in anyway bring reproach upon DMI, ECC or the

Page 7: Become a Certified or Licensed Christian Chaplain - … · Become a Certified or Licensed Christian Chaplain Training Certification Membership & Credentials ... I write to offer you

Moreover, we are in pursuit of religiously educating and equipping Believers to serve and be zealous in their

efforts to promote and advance the Kingdom of God, the Mission of DMI, ECC and its counterparts and to

THE SEVEN ARTICLES OF FAITH

We Believe...

...there is one God eternally existing and manifesting Himself to us in three persons --

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

...Jesus Christ is true God and true man. He is our Lord and Savior

...the Holy Spirit is a divine person, sent to indwell, guide, teach and empower the believer,

and convince the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment.

...the Old and New Testaments, inerrant as originally given, were inspired by God and are

sufficient for faith and practice.

...Where the Scriptures speak, we speak; where the Scriptures are silent, we are silent.

...the church consists of all those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, are redeemed

through His blood and are born again of the Holy Spirit.

...the local church is a body of believers in Christ who are joined together for the worship of

God, for prayer, fellowship, the proclamation of the gospel, and the observance of the

ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper.

Dr. Denis Francois,

Chancellor, DCU

Commander

Dayspring Chaplains

Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Dear Students & Friends,

Welcome to the wonderful family of Dayspring Christian University, formerly the

Institute of Theology & Christian Therapy, ICCT and CMI. Please allow me to share

a few thoughts and highlights about this tremendous ministry.

The Vision:

The vision of Dayspring Christian University and the Institute of Theology & Christian

Therapy remains the same as that of International College of Christian Therapy, broad

and vast. I remember precisely when we began hearing God speak about the vision of

ICCT, which became the ITCT and is now Dayspring Christian University. Starting as

a seemingly insignificant spark, this vision grew for some months and by the end of

summer, 2000 it had grown into a burning flame. It was during this year that we went

into action. Adding to our busy ministry and walking in faith, we began to see the picture unfold. This vision

has became very important to AACT, of which DCU is even more of an integral part than the ITCT and

the ICCT every was.

The University:

We have a genuine burden for ministers, Christian counselors, church workers and everyday Christians

who desire more education in the field of Christian Counseling, Ministry and Theology. Because of time

constraints, inconvenience, or financial difficulties, many cannot attend a classical resident Bible college or

seminary. Recognizing these constraints, We realized the need for affordable, nonresident, and possibly

later, resident training in all of the fields listed. That dream seemed at times to be an unreachable goal.

Nevertheless, as always, God is providing the solution. In an almost overnight intervention from the Lord,

our dream has become a reality, first through the International College of Christian Therapy then thorugh

the Institute of Theology & Christian Cherapy and now overwhelmingly through Dayspring Christian

University.

From these beginnings we have grown until we have students from around the country. We have not set up

branch campuses but we have a training center in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where we hold all of our

graduations in June. In June we also graduate over 100 students in the Fort Worth and Dallas Area.We

have also begun to issue our degrees through our association with Zoe Theological Seminary in Lagos, and

Dayspring Bible Institute in Benin City, Nigeria and in a few schools in Accra, Ghana. Our Lord has been

faithful to send God fearing people, loving and faithful men and women to become a part of the faculty of

this great venture. I cannot thank Him enough for the quality workers He has placed alongside us as our co-

laborers in the execution of this complex task.

Sincerely in Christ,

Dr. Denis Francois, Chancellor
