Our goal is “to bring motorsports to the masses of American men and women who are passionate about automobiles, speed and competition.” I personally have two Panther’s, including the Z8 and SLR McLaren, both of which are my prized possessions. You would never believe the number of compliments I receive when I take my SLR out for a spin! The steering is outstanding and the hand built 332 cu in engine gets many stares at car shows I attend. Summary

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded by Dean

Kamen in 1989 to inspire students to be interested in science and technology. With three

programs in FIRST, the robotics competition (FRC) is the highest level of competition with over

1700 teams worldwide involved. Robotics is costly, but the rewards are great. Cowboy Ken’s

should donate its 501 (c) (3) money to funding local teams because the kids are our future.

Introduction

Cowboy Ken’s cares about our future, which is why we should provide for one of the only ‘sport

for the mind’. FIRST produces students who learn essential life skills as well as technical,

scientific, and communications traits. This report examines the structure of the robotics program,

impact of FIRST, and how we can help. FIRST robotics teams require help, which we can

provide monetarily and with additional support. The products of FIRST are sure to be the most

valued employees of companies in the future.

FIRST Robotics was started by Dean Kamen (inventor of the Segway) and MIT Professor

Woodie Flowers in 1989 to get students excited about science and technology (Metcalfe 106).

They started three separate programs under FIRST, the FIRST Lego League, the FIRST Tech

Callenge, and the FIRST Robotics Competition. The Robotics Competition challenges

highschoolers around the world with a new game each year. Every team has six weeks to build a

robot to compete in the new game, revealed the first Saturday in January.

1. Points of FIRST

- High School teams receive a new game the first Saturday in January and have 6 weeks

to build a robot with a common kit of parts.

- Students also learn “budget restrictions, organization, time-management, team work,

responsibility to others, and public speaking” (Bowden 18).

- After the six weeks of build season, teams ship off their robots to the regional of their

choice where they will compete against 48-60 other teams around the world.

- The kit of parts and entry to one regional costs $6,000, with additional robot fee’s

expanding over $10,000 (including travel fees and outreach materials).

- Teams qualify for World Championships/Nationals by winning the overall robotics

competition, or winning one of three non-robot related awards. The awards show teams

that robots are not everything about FIRST. FIRST is about spreading the word to the

world.

2. Learn

“Over 42,000 high-school students engage in science and technology through the

excitement, intensity, learning and fun of the FIRST Robotics Competition” (Impact

Evaluation). Students learn about real life applications in FIRST. As Dean Kamen states,

“We get what we celebrate. And our culture celebrates sports” (Metcalfe 106). Here at

Cowboy Ken’s, we value the scientists and mathematicians, organizers, graphic

designers, architects, and all our employees, all of whom have a role in FIRST robotics.

The many aspects of FIRST reach out to everyone.

B. Impact

Cowboy Ken’s cares about their community, just as FIRST does. “89% of FRC alumni

FIRST robotics teaches students real life skills, which all future employers’ value.
