n.b.: the hair shirt that Beckett is supposed to have worn beneath his cassock was, perhaps, a reminder, for him, of his sinful condition, and may have been a private and unpretentious affectation consistent, from his point of view, with what he saw as the role of any cleric, high or low, in their relationship with God. While he remained a civil assistant to the King he was notably loyal. Loyalty, therefore, seem to accompany the position so when his loyalty, by job description, was due God it seemed in evitable that should the responsibilities of the kingdom come into conflict with the thought s of the Papacy God, in the person of the Pope, would win out...automatically and by definition.

Keeping this analysis in mind it seems to cast some doubt on the accuracy if the reputation of Beckett’s having been the most intelligent man in England, where, in point of fact what he may have had may simply have been a good lexiconic memory lacking the analytical perception of a functioning intelligence.
