What is the Point Seven Pledge An Advocacy Campaign:

To get Canada to increase Foreign Aid spending to 0.7% of GNP (we currently spend 0.28%).

A National Initiative (across Canada).

The Idea

On July 12, 2004 the UK Campaign succeeded in its goal when their government pledge to reach 0.7% of GDP by 2013.

History – A Success Story

March 25, 1999: Prime Minister Jean Chrétien pledged that

Canada would cancel 100% of the debt owed to it by heavily indebted least developed countries.

How did we get there?

History: The Jubilee 2000 Campaign

16 May 1998: 70,000 people form a human chain around the G-8 Summit in Birmingham. The UK Prime Minister meets Jubilee 2000 organisers.

November 1999 US President Bill Clinton announces he has instructed his officials to cancel 100% of bilateral debt owed to the US by HIPC (heavily indebted poor countries) countries.

17 December 1999 Gordon Brown announces 100 per cent bilateral British debt cancellation owed by HIPCs.

April 1983 Bill Peters writes officially to his government about the potential problem of debt burden.

1993: Martin Dent and Bill Peters create the first Jubilee 2000 Charity.

Oct 1997: Jubilee 2000 is now a coalition of 60 national unions.

May 26th, 2004: EWB begins work on the website campaign.

June 28th, 2004: Federal Election

Result:• 25 partner NGOs• 6,500 Signatures• 20,000 hits on www.pointsevenpledge.ca
