    I - IntroductionInspired from the french expressionBrillant de Beaut, which signifies

    that there is always somethingsplendorous in beauty that captures

    the heart, I would like to begin themodule we have today. But beforethat,

    let us take a look first at ourobjectives:

    - to understand that art is anintegral component of Philippinefestivities;

    - to identify three properties ofbeauty taught by St. ThomasAquinas to facilitate appreciation;

    - to view movie clips to enhanceunderstanding of these properties;

    - and to make own embellishment ofa festivity mask.

    Inspired by the impressive wordsof the Servant of God, John Paul II, in

    his Letter to the Artists, "Beauty, liketruth, brings joy to the humanheart."; theBrilliance of BeautySummer Camp (BBSC) isborne. Based on Our Lord's call to

    perfection this summer camp adoptsthis motto: Be you thereforeperfect as your Heavenly Father isperfect.

    It is apropos to speak a little bit onbeauty. St. Thomas Aquinas, theAngelic Doctor of the Church,commenting on The Divine Namesby Dionysius, cited beauty to be the

    motive and reason for God'screating the world in the first place."Because God possesses His ownbeauty, He wished to multiply it asfar as possible through the

    communication of His own likeness[which every being bears]." And headds, "For all things are made so

    that they may portray the divinebeauty in some way."

    In order to avoid any form ofdeviation in understanding and in

    order not to fall into any kind ofmisinterpretation of the wordbeauty, it is herein definedaccording to the teaching of St.

    Thomas Aquinas. He writes that its

    properties are three, namely: clarityor radiance, proportion or harmony,and integrity or wholeness.

    o Clarity or radiance is what first

    attracts us to a beautifulobject, whether it be a person,a scene from nature, or apainting. By clarity, this does

    not only mean ordinarybrightness, for even thedarkest night lit by a pale

    moonlight may call forth anexperience of the beautiful,and even the sunless depths ofthe sea under certainconditions may unveil its

    marvelous treasures. Thus, St.Thomas hesitates not inaffirming that the intimateassociation of light with beautymarks the ingredient of

    knowledge that is present inbeauty, so that the beautifulalways has a cognitiveelement in it, though notnecessarily in a form that can

    be expressed adequately inideas, concepts, and words....Imagine the awe that abeholder has staring at the

    dazzling luminosity of a gothicCathedral's stained glasswindow!

    o The second feature of beautyaccording to St. Thomas, isproportion or harmony. As weobserve closely the light of asetting sun bouncing on thestillness of a lovely lake, weare struck with an inner orderthat composes the scene; aharmony that lends itsgracious glow to the scene.We also experience a kind of"rightness" or unity that wealso find in a well-playedsymphony, a well-renderedsong, a well-performed dance,a well-composed painting, or awell-directed life.

    o Lastly, the third feature ofbeauty, St. Thomas explains,

    is the integrity of the object;that is, a certain wholenessthat spells completion and that

    gives us at least a fleetingsense of rest.

    providing the vehicle/means so thatlearners retain information learnedduring the school year, in addition toacquiring additional knowledgethrough the learning experience that

    Beauty and Goodness Himself inspired by the educationalmethods and philosophies of ourCatholic Faith. All decisions springfrom the realization that in order to

    Part II - Vision

    The ideal young camper/learnerthat

    the Brilliance of Beauty SummerCamp (BBSC) hopes to "produce" isone who has discovered BEAUTY asthe key that opens the door alongwith Truth and Goodness

    Thus, it is the camp's earnest desireto provide a trulyexciting camping atmosphere that

    Part IV - General Objective ofthe Summer Camp

    The target campers may includechildren from 7-12 years old.

    Emulating the love that St. JohnBosco has for a young child is themotivation of this summer camp.

    The Patron Saint of Youth affirmsthat anyone who is loved can do

    many beautiful things. It is alsoknown that his was the convictionthat there was no such thing as abad child, only bad circumstances,and he worked hard to give children

    a place to play, and to learn to trustagain.

    Ultimately the summer camp is an

    attempt to respond to the challengegiven by His Eminence CardinalGodfried Daneels, the Archbishop

    emeritus of Mechelen-Brussel. HisEminence said that in our daysyoung people tend to closethemselves to the invitation ofencountering God through the

    doors leading to Him. Heexplained that there are three doorsto go to Him. God has three names:Verum, Bonum, Pulcrum, these arethe three universalia of medieval

    philosophy. Thus, he continued:Theres an entrance to go to Godthrough the path of truth (forexample, underlining that God is thefirst Truth); theres another entrance

    which is through goodness(underlining that God is the ultimategood, the supreme sanctity), andalso an entrance through beauty,

    that there is always something forthem to do.

    This takes a lot of energy: we alsoprepare all the meals for thechildren and helpers, and so thereare times in the kitchen, and timeswashing up.

    The atmosphere is superb -everyone gets involved together,and new people are always pairedup with experienced helpers.

    A haven amid thematerialism of our century

    There is a mysterious relationshipbetween music and prayer. Morethan its technical perfection, whatundoubtedly gives special beauty tosacred chant is to see the aspirationof the soul for sanctity reflected in it

    owing to a mysterious power bywhich art is capable of materializingthe spirit. It could truly be said thatauthentic Gregorian chant springsmore from the heart than the lips.Pius XI admirably affirmed this by

    stating that anything that is the fruitof the interior life of the Church surpasseseven the most perfect works ofthis world. 21This statement reveals the enduringvitality of Gregorian chant, despite

    its ancient origins. It also explainswhy it is sought after and admiredfor its simplicity by countlesspeople, many of whom are not practicingChristians. Authentic sacred
