Commodore’s Message

As always at the club, we say our farewell to the previous year and greet the New Year in, with the Junior Sailing Oyster Roast. I am informed that the event was successful and as usu-al, a lot of fun.

We have the same plethora of events (plus a few new ones)

to look forward to over the coming year that we have had in the past. Energetic social, sailing, pool and tennis organizers will endeavor to make sure that we attempt to make 2017 a memorable one for the members and their guests.

Mitch has kept us all very well informed with the going’s-

on at the club, so I will ask you to read his e-mails rather than repeat. Suffice to say, I would ask members to be prompt in their payments of dues.

Over the coming month, we are expecting a quiet time for

events. However, for the hardy sailors, we are offering some cold weather sailing in the form of the frostbite series. Steak Night continues. If you haven’t been to one, I would highly recommend you give one a go in 2017. They are always on the 2nd Wednesday of the month and very rarely cancelled.

Please continue to bring friends who may be interested in

joining the club to our social events. Sunset Friday Nights are always a good start.

Wishing you all a very happy and prosperous New Year. Simon Jenkins Commodore

Bartending Bartending is a great way to earn volunteer hours and to dazzle members with your skill and wit. You

can make people happy and orchestrate the “sounding of the conchs” at sunset. There is no better way to spend a Friday night. It could even be date night? The bartender sign-up link for January, February & March is up and running. Please open the link above and help the club.

Did you know you can find all of the following on the club website? Just open the links.

From the BYSC Race Committee: Five events are fast approaching. It is that time of year. However, three of the events are

new or need explanation. On Saturday, January 21 we will have a RACE MANAGEMENT SEMINAR at the club-

house. This meeting is intended for BYSC principal race officers and any experienced BYSC RC members, including mark boat operators and recorders, who wish to gain knowledge of race management. We will start 10:00 and end by 12:30. The topics to be emphasized are course configuration and the decision making process. Geoff Grout and Wayne Bretsch will be the presenters.

On Sunday, January 22 we will initiate a new series, the FROSTBITE SERIES for small

boats. The series will last 6 weeks and have special rules regarding safety and procedures. The classes invited include MC, Laser, Sunfish, and 420. If the weather is not favorable because of temperature, rain, or wind we will not go that day. The sailing instructions should be available soon.

The SAYRA meeting will be held on January 28, again on Hilton Head. On Saturday, February 4 the PHRF FROSTBITE SERIES will start. It will be the same for-

mat as past years, with the same PHRF personnel. For more information contact Commodore Jenkins.

On February 11 we will have our annual SAILORS’ MEETING. This is a great time to meet

and greet your fellow racers and discuss items with the race committee. In addition to a discus-sion about the racing schedule we will also spend about an hour discussing rules and tactics, with an emphasis on starting and mark rounding.

Please note the following changes to the schedule:

The Santa Elena Cup has been moved to Saturday, March 25 & Sunday March 26. The Spring Series #1 will move to April 2. It appears to be a busy schedule, but that is what the racers appear to want. See you on the water. Wayne Bretsch Race Committee Chair

It's time to renew your US Sailing and SAYRA dues. US Sailing dues can be renewed by using this hyperlink: Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club MVP

Program. If you haven't used a hyperlink before, just highlight the link, right click on your mouse, "open hyperlink" and it will connect automatically. BYSC will receive credit for your membership and you will receive discounted dues and other items.

This is especially a good year to renew because you will also receive a new copy of the Racing

Rules of Sailing, 2017-2020. This is our racing bible and if you are a sailor or on race committee you need to have the updated rules.

SAYRA is our area Yacht Racing Association that reports to US Sailing. They represent sailors in

SC, NC and GA and provide a number of useful services, such as: an active junior sailing program, scheduling of club regattas to avoid conflicts and race management training. It is a good organiza-tion, hard working volunteers and they need your support. It also doesn't cost much. Use this hy-perlink to join or renew: https://www.regattanetwork.com/membermgmt/SAYRA/membership_registration_start.php.

SAYRA hosts an annual meeting and this year it will be on Hilton Head Jan. 27-29. You don't have to attend for all three days but each day has some interesting sailing seminars and social activi-ties. You can find the information on the SARYA website at the hyperlink: http://www.sayra-sailing.com/pages/AGM_Info.htm.

Some of us sailors from BYSC will be attending and it is open to all whether you sail or not. Jun-iors are also encouraged to attend. They ask for reservations but there is no cost. Link for ONLINE Annual Meeting Registration: (hyperlink) http://www.regattanetwork.com/event/13620

If you are interested in racing or race management both of these organizations are worthwhile and the annual meeting is a bonus.

THE SANTA ELENA REGATTA Including the Jean Ribaut Cup and Pedro Menendez Cup

March 25 & 26, 2017

The Jean Ribaut Cup and Pedro Menendez Cup are two separate events sailed on consecutive days that are combined to form a significant sailing event named The Santa Elena Regatta which commemorates the founding of the Spanish colony of Santa Elena on Parris Island. There will be two days of racing and social events sponsored by the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club.

N O T I C E O F R A C E

RULES: The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing. ELIGIBILITY: The Jean Ribaut Cup and Pedro Menendez Cup are open to monohull boats currently rated

in the US Sailing PHRF manual and are at least 22’ LOA. Boats that are less than 22' LOA but at least 18' LOA will be considered on a case by case basis. All boats must have at least two people on board. One design fleets will also be con-sidered for entry but are not eligible to compete for the Ribaut, Menendez or Sanrta Elena Trophies.

All boats participating must have VHF radio communication capabilities, and be insured with a valid third party lia-bility insurance policy.

The intent is to have boats sailing with boats of similar PHRF ratings. Both groups will sail the same course with the higher handicap rated group starting first. Spinnakers may be used if declared to the Race Committee prior to the warn-ing gun for the first group to start of each event.

Both events will have a Racing Class and a Cruising Class. Boats must declare the class in which they will be sailing

by the Competitors Meeting on Friday night. There also will be an overall winner for the Santa Elena Regatta. Boats from both the Racing and Cruising Class are

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS AND NOTICE OF RACE: Sailing Instructions (SI’s) and Notice of Race (NOR) will be available at the Competitors Meeting. PENALTIES: Rule 44.1 is changed so that the Two-Turns penalty is replaced by the One-Turn Penalty. RACING AREAS: Jean Ribaut Cup- Racing will be conducted on Por t Royal Sound between Hilton Head, Bay Point and Parr is

Island; and the Beaufort River (Chart 11516). Course specifics in the SI’s. Depending on conditions the intent is to start and sail the first race in Port Royal Sound; and have the second race start in Port Royal Sound and sail up the Beaufort River to finish at BYSC.

Pedro Menendez Cup - Racing will be conducted in the Beaufor t River between the Woods Swing br idge and

G"31" in the Beaufort River. Depending on conditions the intent is to start in the area just west of the Woods Swing Bridge by the Beaufort waterfront, sail down the Beaufort River, round on a government mark, then return the finish at BYSC. Rounding mark to be determined by existing conditions.

Sailing conditions will determine the starting areas, number of races and courses for the Ribaut and/or Menendez

Cups. SCORING: PHRF handicaps using the time-on-time computation method. All races count; there will be no races

discarded. For each of the two individual events final positions will be determined by awarding finishing positions in each race based on corrected time and then adding the finishing positions together (if more than one race) to determine overall final position for each event.

The Santa Elena Regatta winner will be the boat from either the Racing or Cruising Class with the fastest corrected

time for the combined Jean Ribaut and Pedro Menendez Cups. PRIZES: Perpetual trophies with the winners name on them will be kept at BYSC for the Jean Ribaut Cup, the Jean Ribaut

Cruising Class, the Pedro Menendez Cup, the Pedro Menendez Cruising Class and the Santa Elena Regatta

For both events there will be a Racing Class and a Cruising Class. Boats must declare the class in which they are

sailing by the Competitors Meeting on Friday night. The Jean Ribaut Cup and Pedro Menendez Cup will be awarded to

the top finishing boat in the Racing Class for each respective day. The Jean Ribaut Cruising Cup and Pedro Menendez

Cruising Cup will be awarded to the top boat in the Cruising Class for each respective event. Keeper trophies will be

awarded to both classes depending on the number of entrees. Both classes will sail the same course for all races.

The Santa Elena Regatta winner will be the boat with the fastest corrected total time for all races in the Rib-

aut and Menendez Cups. A keeper trophy will be awarded to the winner.

One Design: If there are separate star ts for one design classes, boats racing in those classes will not be eligible

for the Ribaut Cup, Menendez Cup or Santa Elena Regatta; however, there will be keeper trophies for those classes.

DOCKING: Docking space is available at BYSC on a fir st come basis.
