Bow Watch – July

Once again, due

to the tremendous

efforts of many,

many, many BYSC

members (and even

a few guests), the

48th Lowcountry

Regatta was a huge

success !!! Over

90 boats on three race courses, challenging wind and tide conditions,

“awesome” parties and entertainment, and super food. My personal THANK

YOU to everyone that contributed – volunteers, sponsors, club staff, and race

participants. From the feedback I have been getting from the sailors and their

families/friends, every aspect of the entire event, both on and off the water,

was great. And, of course the hospitality of the BYSC membership through-

out the weekend was second to none. But, that is exactly what the sailors

throughout our region have come to expect and is what keeps them looking

forward to the Lowcountry Regatta year after year. The Lowcountry Regatta

truly is a premier event among the regional summer open regattas. Well done

BYSC !!

The Lowcountry Regatta is not the only success in the past month or so –

another great meal served at Steak Night, an almost overwhelming turnout

for the first couple of ‘Final Fridays’, both the BYSC ‘Summer Camps’ and

the Junior Sailing of Beaufort ‘Learn-To-Sail’ programs are going strong, and

the pool and the tennis courts are always busy. Next up, the Water Festival

Regatta and all of the other activities at BYSC associated with or generated

by the festival. Something for everyone.

It is your club – come enjoy it - Chuck

class at Charleston Race Week in April. 80+ boats were split into two starts

Hey Ya’ll,

Well June was certainly a whirlwind. The Club is

hopping and there are folks all over the place enjoy-

ing the summer. Camp is bigger and better than ever

and we keep selling out every session! My guys and

girls are doing a great job and we have another

great month of summer left.

Quick note– The Raccoons have also noticed how

popular the place is, please help prevent raccoon

pool parties by picking up and throwing trash into

the blue dumpster on your way out.

It’s Fourth of July Weekend, the grills are gassed

up and I’ll ice down the coolers, come out and enjoy

your club!

Water festival is upon us again very soon. If you

need a sticker for your boat please come by the

office, BYSC members with boats need a sticker to

tie up to the dock and use the boat ramp.

59th Annual Water Festival Regatta

In those first Water Festivals in the 1950s, a sailing regatta

was one of the prime events for spectators and participants

alike. Those races, as well as power boat races, were held in

front of town well before the Henry Chambers Waterfront

Park was even thought of. And the original members of

BYSC were heavily involved in all of those activities.

The 59th edition of that sailing event will be held at BYSC

on July 12-13. The Water Festival is sponsoring the regatta

and BYSC is hosting it. The community is invited to watch

the racing from our facilities. But we need racers. Anticipat-

ed classes include MC Scows, Lasers, Sunfish, Optis, JY 15s,

420s, and a PHRF fleet. The skippers meeting will be held at

1 pm on Saturday, July 12 with the warning gun for the first

start at 2 pm. The Sunday races will also start at 2 pm. The

Water Festival Commodore will be at the club around 5 pm

on Sunday to give out the awards. We need BYSC sailors to

participate. Registration will be held at the club from 11 am

to 1 pm on Saturday.

Come enjoy the fun and be part of the heritage of sailing in

Beaufort.

. New this year will be a Learn to Race

12. At the end of

the week, we

will have

able to coach

ta.

Sailing News:

The 2014 Low Country Regatta is history and it

was a fine event. Ninety (90) boats participated,

which equated to probably 150 sailors with an-

other 50 or so shore supporters. The teams

came from mostly SAYRA clubs in NC, SC, GA

and TN. Local sailors that placed well includ-

ed:

Connor Akers, BYSC, 1st in the JY15 class.

Christopher Spears, 2nd in the JY 15 class.

Andy Kinghorn, BYSC, 1st in the Laser Full Rig class.

Alexander Mazzeo, BYSC, 2nd in the 420 class.

Paul Keyserling, BYSC, finishing 7 in a strong 18 boat MC Scow class.

Gordon Sproul, BYSC, 2nd in the 13 boat Sunfish class.

Woody Norwood, BYSC, 4th in the Sunfish class.

Sue McCann, BYSC, 6th in the Sunfish class.

John Potter, BYSC, 1st in the VX1 class.

Thomas Mazzeo, BYSC, 1st in the Optimist White class.

Roughly 50 people helped on-the-water to pull of the racing and probably an equal num-

ber worked on shore serving meals and providing land support.

We had three race courses with PRO’s; John Barber, Wayne Bretsch and Chuck Rushing

and their teams managing the races very professionally. In addition to the 3 signal boats with

their flag person and recorders we had another 11 boat teams supporting the effort as mark boats.

The launch crew, headed up by David Dixon and Gary Noble, launched and retrieved approx. 25

boats each day off the dock, which was a major effort and handled well. The Lady’s Island Fire

Dept. had two firefighters each day on the course acting as an EMT team-thanks to Chief Kline

for organizing the crews again this year.

Despite the heat, the winds were decent and the storms stayed away until after the racing.

Kudos to all who participated: sailors and volunteers alike. This is our biggest event of the year

and good percentage of our membership participated in some fashion. It was a great weekend.

I hope ya’ll have been enjoying the new Saline Chlorinated Swimming Pool. It has saved the club some money on chemicals as well as being a little easier on the eyes and skin. I’m glad we where able to make things that much nicer. I have seen a lot of people out there since school let out and we are so glad to see that. If you want to book a pool party please call the office at least a week in advance.

The Pool is now open for regular hours 9am-7pm Mon-Saturday and 12 pm-7pm Sundays. Join the ladies for water aerobics—call the office for information!
