We are expanding our line of professional LED panels with the addition of Manfrotto’s Spectra LED lights. The Spectra series uses only the highest quality LEDs, to guarantee the same level of performance from every light that they make. The light emitted from the Spectra LED lights allow for a high quality color reproduction and skin tones that are pleasing and always natural.

Manfrotto has seven models of Spectra LED lights including two versions of the Spectra 1x1 LED panel. The light output is typically 5600°K. Some models are available with the ability to change color temperature from warm white (3200°K) to cold white (5600°K). The light intensity is adjustable, and gel filters for colour correction are an option as well.

The 1X1 Panels are carefully designed, paying close attention to reliability and consistent flicker-free functionality. They are lightweight and compact, and thanks to the slim design, they are extremely portable, making them suitable for a great variety of situations. V-mount batteries and adapters are available as a special order.

Safety is paramount with Manfrotto, and all devices belonging to the Spectra line of products are fully tested by a certified laboratory and comply with mandatory standards and regulatory requirements (CE, FCC, RoHS). With regards to photobiological safety (IEC 62471), Spectra LED lights falls into Risk Group 0 (defined as “Exempt”), meaning that there is no endangerment to the eye from these devices (official certificate is available on demand).

NEW Sony Lens in Rentals!

We have the new Sony/Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f4 ZA OSS (whew!) lens available for rent. This lens is Sony’s answer to many prayers wishing for a good ultra wide angle lens for Sony’s mirrorless full frame cameras. This new lens for the Alpha mirrorless system is an ultra sharp wide angle zoom lens with a constant f4 aperture, perfect for landscapes, real estate and architectural work. The lens also boasts Sony’s OSS (Optical SteadyShot) for up to 3 stops of stabilization and fast, quiet and reliable auto-focusing in most situations.

I took this lens on a short road trip, and it handled admirably on a Sony A7R body, providing sharp images corner to corner with respectable lack of distortion, and also providing pleasing bokeh when called for. Handheld shots were mostly sharp even though my shaky, caffeine fueled hands did their best to thwart the operation of the OSS!

FujifilmWith a bit of a lull in January, Fujifilm rebates are back in full force for February! While some rebates are not quite as high as they were in December, some others are even better. For example, now the X-T1 Graphite SIlver also has a $100 rebate, the 18mm f/2 is $150 off at only $449 and now even the excellent little X30 P&S is $100 off at $549.

New Nikon LensAt CES in January, Nikon announced a very interesting new lens, the AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR! This is a new, super lightweight and compact stabilized 300mm lens that is roughly half the weight of the older AF-S 300mm f/4D but

promises even better performance in most ways!

According to Nikon’s MTF charts this really compact new lens should substantially outperform the older, already very sharp model and it also has VR on top of that. This new lens should start shipping in February at $2,199 and we are planning

on having one in our rental department as well. In the lens’ name, PF stands for Phase-Fresnel and an explanation of exactly what this is can be found on Nikon’s website here...

The ED (Extra-low Dispersion glass) and VR (Vibration Reduction) tags in the lens’ name are are obvious, but the other thing that you might not be familiar with is the ‘E’ after the f-stop. This lens features a new electronically controlled aperture, so while I have not seen one in person, I presume it will no longer have the mechanically actuated aperture stop-down lever inside the bayonet mount.

The new 16-35mm from Sony is a spectacular performer

with excellent build quality, outstanding sharpness, even in

the extreme corners if stopped down a little and maintains

good contrast, even when shot into the sun. Its one weak

spot might be a little bit of lens flare but it is certainly

not enough to take away too many marks from what is

otherwise a superb ultra-wide zoom lens. I have seen many

similar lenses that suffer from worse flare effects. If you are

a landscape or architectural photographer, or just like wide-

angle perspectives, and own an A7 series body, then this

lens is a must-have! It is priced at $1,469, and we have one

in rentals if you would like to test one out first.

High Speed Lexar Cards

By the time you read this, we should finally have all of

Lexar’s new high-speed SD cards in stock, the 1000x and

2000x UHS-II (U3) varieties. If you have a modern, high-

speed camera like the Nikon D750 or Fujifilm X-T1 and

want the fastest possible buffer clearing or, for example, are

trying to shoot 4K video with a Panasonic GH4, then these

new cards may just be what you were waiting for! You do

pay a premium for the fastest cards, but the pricing is still

fairly reasonable, at least compared to years gone by. We

are stocking the following capacities…

Tiffen FiltersTiffen has introduced three new ND filters designed for extreme long exposure photography. All are10 stop ND filters but their ability to block the IR spectrum varies.

The APEX is of the most interest to photographers doing extreme long exposures who are looking to eliminate the red cast normally associated with using regular 10 stop ND filters. The APEX blocks near IR wavelengths and also has Tiffen’s “Hot Mirror” coating which effectively blocks all infrared wavelengths. 77mm APEX - $189.95

The ADVANTIX is designed with the same near IR blocking capabilities as the APEX but is without the Hot Mirror coating. By blocking the near IR, the colour balance in long exposures is greatly improved. This coating can add a slight green cast to the image which can be corrected in post production. 77mm ADVANTIX - $109.95

The AXENT is a colour neutral ND with no IR blocking and is at a price point that is affordable. Tiffen states on its website that when using FUJI X-Trans APS-C sensor cameras, an extreme colour cast, similar to colour infrared photography can be acheived. 77mm AXENT - $45.92

Unfortunately their suppliers have decided to market towards outdoor stores instead and we can no longer get them in. This great new bag from LowePro really changes how you can carry all your gear. With multiple access points, it makes it easy to have all your necessary equipment ready at all times. This backpack allows you to get at your gear from accessible zippered doors on each side, as well as a top access and a full back access. It is a very well laid out bag that has taken all access to another level. There is also a dedicated pocket in the back for a laptop.

The other really interesting point about this bag is that it is covered in many, many rows of LowePro’s SlipLock straps so you

Develop your own roll of film!

Don’t have access to a darkroom, but have always wanted to learn the fine details of processing your own black and white film at home?

Well Kathy will now be giving lessons! She will show you how to develop 35mm, 120 or 4x5 black and white film without a darkroom. All you need to bring is exposed B&W film and the tank you’d like to learn on. She will spend two hours taking you step by step through the whole process. This class was planned for your convenience so you can book your lesson for any time Kathy’s here at Beau working; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:30 - 3pm. The cost is $45.00 for a 2hr class and all chemicals are supplied by Beau Photo. We use Blazinal (Rodinal equivalent) to develop the film, Ilford Ilfostop, Ilford Rapid Fix, Kodak Hypo Clear and Kodak Photo Flo.

We’ve had a few classes so far and have seen some some very interesting, very successful results! A few of our clients got experimental - they processed colour C-41 film through black and white chemistry. The results were very cool. Their films looked soft and glowy, however this could change from roll to roll. We don’t recommend this as a first roll to learn on however as the results can vary. Ask us to recommend a first roll if you are unsure which to try.
