As you may have noticed from the cover of this issue of the Bear Valley Springs Bear Tracks, we have an updated and exciting look for our monthly newsletter. With our new publishers Ron and Sheree Fishgold and their talented team of design and pro-duction professionals at Goldfish Publications, LLC, publishers of Names and Numbers Tehachapi, we are thrilled with the launch of this new era in communications with the Bear Valley Springs Community. With community branding and image being crit-ical to the marketing success of our Association for both cur-rent and prospective members, we need to make sure that we are sending out the right mes-sage through this publication. As such, we will continue mak-ing progressive enhancements as we move forward with our new publisher partnership.

Relative to content, last month’s

issue included a statement from our former publisher regarding an article that he stated I denied and removed. His statement, “The article on page 26 cannot be printed per the contract which states members are not allowed to submit articles and their per-sonal opinions.” was only par-tially correct. The actual con-tractual language states: “2.04 D. The Contractor (Publisher) will include all written material pro-vided by the Association in each edition of the newsletter and no articles provided by any other party including the Contractor (Publisher) will be allowed in the newsletter without permission of the Association General Manag-er. Additional articles will be al-lowed based on a Memorandum of Understanding between BVSA and the Bear Valley Community Services District (BVCSD).”

In addition, 2.04 A. states: “The Contractor (Publisher) will use

good taste in any advertising included in the newsletter and will not include ads pertaining to political candidates or politi-cal issues, religious issues, or any issues that would be considered offensive to homeowners in a planned community.” Based on the article having political over-tones that were not shared by ei-ther the Association or the Com-munity Services District and considering that the Bear Tracks is not intended as a public forum to exercise our Constitutional First Amendment Rights, we chose not to publish the article.

On a final note, we have recent-ly been asked to share our ban-quet policy regarding leftover or excess food from Banquet and Special Events. The following policy outlines the purpose and reasoning for our policy. As you will see, your safety and welfare are the motivation for this policy. Until next month, Bon Appétit!POLIcY

1.1. BVSA Food and Beverage Policy prohibits “leftover” or ex-cess food from being taken home by event attendees of special events or banquet events catered by the Oak Tree Country Club and BVSA.

Due to the many stages of food handling required to prepare food for large-scale banquet and special events, the safe life cy-cle of banquet and special event food is considered to be shorter than what is found in a direct restaurant dining environment. Taking food from banquet or special events is not the same as taking food from a restaurant. Our policy is designed to pro-tect members, guests and BVSA

from the potential hazards asso-ciated with consuming food that is not stored below 41 degrees, or over 135 degrees, which prevents the growth of microorganisms which may cause illness.

The California Retail Food Code contains more than one hundred pages of requirements directing those involved in pro-viding food products safely to the public. In consideration of the California Retail Food Code safe handling guidelines and reg-ulations, our BVSA Food and Beverage Policy is designed to ensure compliance in provid-ing safe food to members and guests of Banquet and Special Events and minimize the possi-bility of food-borne illness relat-ed to food produced by BVSA. This policy is provided to direct BVSA employees in regards to requests made by members and guests regarding taking leftover or excess food from banquet and special events.

Elevated Bear Tracks!

From the PublishersWe are so excited to have the privilege of taking over the publishing of Bear Tracks magazine beginning with this July issue! The previous publisher, Maurice Gubler, took this publication from a black and white newsletter to a colorful, pleasant-reading magazine that Bear Valley residents have enjoyed receiving every month. We plan to con-tinue to build on this outstanding publication. We know that many of you that were involved in providing articles, photos and other infor-mation, are going to miss your regular contact with Maurice, but we hope to make this transition as smooth as possible. ONCE UPON A TIME, when I was a young girl my mother would take me once a week to rest homes (as they were called then) and we would take turns reading the Bible to the residents. I could hardly stand to be there it smelled so horrible, I thought to myself I will never let my parents go to a place like this. Years later when I had a family and young children of my own, I was trying to think of something I could do for work where I would not need to leave them with a babysitter or day care.

That is when my sister and I decided to open the home for the care of el-derly people. We did this here in Bear Valley in 1996. Ourfirstresidentwasaladyinher70’s who was from Malibu, we had greattimestogether.Wewentfishingon the Kern, toured the feline com-pound, went to kid movies and hiked the small trails around Bear Valley. We had other ladies who we took horse back riding and even jet skiing. Later when the economy changed the age of our residents went from 60-80 to 80-100 year of age. The things we used to do were no longer age appro-priate. As the ages of our residents changed we had to make changes also. We then did more local things. Picnics at the lakes, picking pine-cones, feeding the ducks, planting window boxes, puzzles, painting etc. One of our ladies came from Bur-bank when she was 89 and passed away at almost 102, she did it all. During these years my children learned to have compassion for old-er ones and their limitations and they had a lot of fun with them. They helped them with small tasks and

played music, games, danced, sang songs and just acted silly to make them laugh. My older son and his wife would stay at night, assist with bathing and dressing and get them settled in for the night. It turned out to be a whole family experience that involved almost all of our fami-ly and some friends. It turned out to be a good decision for all, and for the community. Our meal for the month was eggplant with goat cheese ravi-oli in a basil tomato sauce, focaccia bread, cucumber salad, and strawber-ry cheese cake. Marion Mitchell Morrison was his real name, he was born in 1907. He attended Glendale High School and had a football scholarship at USC un-tilhewasinjuredinabodysurfingac-

He was my neighbor when I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and I took care of his grandchildren on several occa-sions. Can you Guess his name?

Fourteen members gathered on 6/3 to attempt to Beat the Pro and celebrate Duane’s birthday in the Mulligan Room after play.  Being the good sport he is, he allowed everyone (with their handicaps) to actually beat him!!! THANKS Duane!!!

On June 4th, we held our first major tournament for the year - Couples Tournament - with 48 players competing in a Best Ball tournament.

Fourteen of our members enjoyed an interesting golf Bingo format for 9 holes, followed by lunch at the Mulligan Room with sixteen members celebrating our gals with May birthdays.

On Saturday, May 14th, the Oak Tree Men’s Golf Club held its most popular golf tournament of the year with the 3 club and a putter format. We had 60 players and each could any three clubs out of their bag and a putter. This is all they could take. Every year it amazes me the scores that are posted in this format. Makes you wonder why we carry 14 clubs the rest of the time. The players were split into four flights based on handicaps. Sportsman’s Club – A club for you? Yes, for all you new residents to BVS, or resident non-members, this is a great place to make new friends, participate in great activi-ties/events and have a really good time. Having a great time is what members did last month at the Annual Chili Cook-Off at 4 Island Lake. Please plan to attend and join us at the following activities:

HOT DOG BOOTH – July 2, 3, 4. By the time you get this, it may be over. But, this is the “biggy” that’s so much fun to volunteer for. If you need any information, call Sue Sharp, 821-1746.

CIRCLE THE WAGONS – July 5 – This event is open to all Sports-man’s Club members and is a fun, relaxed event. RV’ers start arriving around 11:00 am in the lower park-ing lot of the OTCC. Barbeque will be fired up about 4:15 and the rest of us can come anytime between then and 5:00. Here’s what you need to bring: chairs, meat for barbecue, beverages, plates/utensils/glasses/napkins for yourselves and a side dish to share. For questions, call Howard Krawitz, Chairperson, at 821-0923.

SPORTSMAN’S CLUB MEET-ING – July 21 6:30-7:30 ( please

note time change) at the OTCC Card Room. We keep inviting you and we’ve had several new couples join recently. So, we hope you’ll come to this meeting as our meetings are usually lively and if you join us for dinner in either the saloon or the restau-rant, you’ll find meeting us easy. Your participation will be a pos-itive for you.

DINNER GOLF TOURNA-MENT – ? ? ? ? ? ? Saturday, July 30 – Well this is unpleasant. We don’t have a chairman as of yet. Hope-fully, by the time you read this, we will have one, in which case, you must check the E-Buzz or call a Sportsman’s Club member.

DEEP PIT BARBECUE – Sat-urday, August 27. Save the date. And, as we are always looking for volunteers for set-up, tear down, deep pit cooking, check-in, serv-ers, etc.

Call Will Handley, Chairperson, at 414-6489, for more informa-tion.

You are invited to enjoy a summer evening of music out-doors at Cub Lake, Saturday evening, July 16th, with the Pat Strong Trio. The concert will start at approximately 5:30 PM at Cub Lake.  This will be the third year that the musicians have generously donated their time to perform an outdoor evening concert at one of Bear Valley’s parks.  Friends and families are encouraged  to bring a picnic dinner, along with low chairs or a blanket, to enjoy an evening of music.

The group performs upbeat, easy-listening music sung in 3- or 4-part harmony. They play all their favorites, including country, folk, soft rock and jazz. They enjoy “mixing it up” with songs of all kinds, both fast and slow, creating a fresh, fun sound for all ages.

The  group consists of Pat Strong, as the key vocalist and rhythm guitar, with Amanda Carroll as the band’s soprano sing-er. Dave Pellisero plays bass guitar and adds his voice to the mix. Jack Hill, the groups lead guitarist, plays a mean harmonica and sings many songs in his unique style. Casey Papac sings some of the leads and blends her deep alto harmony with Pat, Aman-da and Jack. Casey also accompanies the group on an amplified djembe drum.

Come enjoy an evening picnic at the lake with your family and friends!

T-POPS, Tehachapi’s own community orchestra, con-ducted by Daniel Musquez, will provide a joyful noise to all who come to Cub Lake for the con-cert beginning at 3 PM Sun-day, July 17th, in Bear Val-ley Springs. The T-POPS musicians play a unique blend of popular music favorites. The concert is free to all, but donations are gratefully accepted. There will be a cake walk game during the intermission. T-POPS t-shirts will be available for pur-chase. They are artfully designed by local musician and artist Terri Asher.

So, plan to come to Bear Val-ley. Bring your summer toys, chairs, umbrellas, and your yum-my picnic lunch. Whoops! Don’t forget the kids. Our T-POPS Or-

chestra will provide the sound track to the delightful

afternoon backdrop for your self-ies or summer fun photos.

This concert is brought to you by the Bear Valley Cultural Arts Association, a non-profit associ-ation that promotes the Arts, and supports the Arts through schol-arships to deserving students, in the community of Tehachapi.

Gate passes are available by calling Linda at 821-1505.

The temperatures continue to rise and the fun activities contin-ue on at the Bear Valley Springs Equestrian Center. We are in full swing with our summer events and continue to see more people out riding and hiking. For your convenience, we have provided a calendar of all scheduled events for the month of July. We encour-age all Members to look into the ongoing activities and events and to participate or just come by to cheer on your fellow riders.

Please see the following dates for events going on at the Eques-trian Center during the month of July:

July 9th – Buckaroos Playday – Main Arena from 8 to 2

July 10th – Playday Chal-lenge-Main Arena starting at 12 noon.

July 16th – Carriage Driving Club – Driving Arena from 9-3

July 17th – Buckaroos Jackpot – Cattle Arena from 8-4

July 24th – Dressage Show – Dressage Arena from 8 to Finish

July 29th-31st – Pony club clin-ic

Throughout the month of July, there will continue to be regularly scheduled practices for Green-horns, Buckaroos, Pony Club, and the Carriage Club. If you would like any further information on any of the horse clubs in Bear Valley, please refer to the contact numbers in the Recreation book-let, the monthly Bear Tracks, or call the Equestrian Center office.

On May 23rd, we were fortu-nate to have been able to host a day-long clinic with Dr. Lenhert of Apple Valley Equine Hospi-tal. Last year, Dr. Lenhert held several clinics the Equestrian Center and we are happy to be able to offer the clinic to our Members. The Equestrian Cen-ter will always post notifications of any upcoming clinic days, but

as a reminder, all appointments must be scheduled directly with Dr. Lenhert, not the Equestrian Center office. A big thank you goes out to Dr. Lenhert and his staff for all the hard work they do at our clinic.

Please remember that the Equestrian Center and trail sys-tems are an amenity in Bear Val-ley Springs; therefore we reserve the right to check amenity cards at any time. All Staff will be making regular rounds to check amenity passes. All members must carry their amenity card with them at all times while at the Equestrian Center or while on any of the trail systems. A gate pass will not suf-fice in lieu of a valid amenity card. Guests must have a temporary amenity card issued by the Eques-trian Center, Whiting Center, or BVSA office if not accompanied by the sponsoring member at all times. We have a few helpful suggestions to ensure you always have your card with you: take a clear picture on your phone, or make several copies and keep them in your saddle bags, in your car, or in your wallet. As long as your name, picture, and tract/

lot number are legible it is valid. (Section 305, Article H).

All members need a signed li-ability release form current as of January 1, 2015; this includes property owners, as well as guests. Anyone who rides on the prop-erty at the Equestrian Center, or uses any of the trails, must sign a new release form. This is an in-surance requirement. The form must be filled out in its entirety, including the front and back, and the emergency contact portion. The form can be downloaded at www.bvsa.org, obtained at the Equestrian Center office, or at the BVSA office. Releases for minors must be completed by a parent or legal guardian; grandparents cannot sign the release for their grandchildren. The forms are to be turned in to the Equestrian Center office. (Section 603, Arti-cle K).

As always, if there are any ques-tions or concerns, please feel free to stop by the Equestrian Center office during regular office hours, or call me at (661) 821-3960. We wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July, and happy riding and hiking!

Bear Valley Resident (805) 708-5022Dedicated to the Health and Well-being of horses

Time to get your horses ready for the Bear Valley 4th of July Parade. This year we can thank Maryann Cooper for organiz-ing the Carriage Club entry. All of us take time to celebrate our great country’s birthday. Thank you to everyone for hauling your horse and carts to make this pa-rade special. The bystanders love to see the horse drawn carts dec-orated in red, white and blue.

Our June workshop was well attended. I admire everyone that comes out to work on extending the training of their horse. After the workshop, lunch was served in the campground. Workshops and lunch are of no cost to members. Our next workshop is Saturday, July 16, at the Eques-trian Center.

David, Maryann and Mar-lene  Cooper  were on their way to the workshop with their truck and trailer, filled with their own horses.  They came upon a truck and trailer with horses on the shoulder of Bear Valley Road.  Marina Onder-donk was trailering two hors-es when one went down under the divider.  She was able to get the big bay out, but could not move the divider to free the oth-er horse. Cars were whizzing by and only the Coopers stopped to help her out. David was able to move the divider and free the horse that was down.  The Coopers are a treasure to all  of us.  David said he would never forget the look of fear on Ma-rina’s face.  I believe Bear Valley is blessed with very special and caring people.

The Equestrian Center open house was another success. The crowd was treated to see Dottie and Peggy Aton driving their mini, Broker. What a charmer.

The weather in June was so mild.  We had a good turnout for the drive and ride out of

Cub Lake. Our trail boss, Carol Hellyer, is planning these events from her wheelchair. Carol’s leg was kicked by a passing horse when she was packing in the Sierras.  Nothing keeps Carol down.

Our speaker for  the June meeting was Ann Carroll, rep-resenting Have a Heart Hu-mane Society rescue.  This is a Tehachapi, Kern County based organization, that operates en-tirely by volunteers.  The funds for spay and neuter are from donations and grants.  The goal is to build a no-kill rescue for Tehachapi.  Last year in Kern County, over 20,000 dogs and cats died needlessly.  Have a Heart has opened a resale shop, Rescued Treasures. All proceeds from the sale of items go to the care of the rescued animals. The resale store is on the corner of Tucker and Valley, next to Ra-dio Shack. Store hours are 10-4, Tuesday through Saturday.  Do-nations are appreciated.

A word about those loose dogs in the meadow. Aside from ignoring the Bear Valley ordi-nance, just think about your vet bill when your dog runs into a rattlesnake or gets his ears or sheath full of fox tails.

Just an update on events, be-cause of declining health, I have stepped down as president of the BVS Carriage Driving Society. Our new president is our own Sally Barton.  We are so very for-tunate to have someone so very experienced and knowledgeable about horses.  Sally got her first horse in 1949 and she has never been without a horse since.  We stand behind Sally and support her as our new president.

T-BALL (co-ed)T-ball will be conducted the

same as it was last year. The coaches will be tossing three pitches to each child before having to hit from the tee. This will start to teach the kids to hit a pitched ball. A detailed prac-tice plan will be available for all coaches and parents alike. The practice plan is similar to the plans that will be used for this year’s older boy’s baseball camp. This plan will make it fun for the kids and organized for the coaches, with results you can see. The drills in the plan can be taken home by the kids, where they can practice them with their parents or friends.BVS INSTRUCTIONAL BOYS BASEBALL CAMP

Baseball Camp this year will be split into two camps. July 11th is the camp for 7 & 8 yr. olds. This camp will be for the young-er kids with limited experience. The camp will focus more on basic fundamentals, extending more one-on-one instruction. We felt last year the 7 & 8 yr. olds were rushed, not truly un-derstanding the concepts.

The July 18th camp will be for the older kids with more expe-rience who have a better under-standing of the fundamentals. The goal in this camp is to fine tune the skills, building quick-ness and confidence.

The format in both camps will be the same as last year. Four days, three-and-a-half hours, with a nutritional break and

chalk talk mid-morning.We are limiting each camp to

40 campers. This will allow for better player-to-coach ratio with emphasis on refining the funda-mentals. BVS GIRLS INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTBALL CAMP

Girls softball camp only had six girls last year with only two coaches, myself and one oth-er Rec Aide from the Whiting Center. The young girls that at-tended learned some new skills, as well as a renewed excitement for the game.

This year I have enlisted the help of some Tehachapi War-riors girls’ softball players. Una Abarquez has offered to help and will try and recruit fellow players. With the help of this cal-iber of players, this year’s camp should be an experience every young, aspiring softball player

will highly benefit from.Sign-ups for girls softball will

be June 30th thru July 22nd. Camp dates are scheduled for August 1st thru the 4th 9:00 am

to 12:30 pm.Give me a call at 661-821-6641

BVS Women’s Club hosts aquatic

themed luncheonWet and Wild was the theme

for the Bear Valley Women’s Club June Luncheon, inspired by our guest speaker, Marti Sprinkle. Marti has been involved in and teaching water aerobics and the benefits of water exercise for ar-thritis relief for many years here in Bear Valley Springs. You can join her classes ev-ery weekday at the BVS pool. She also has a new book out: Wa-ter Won-der Works, a Guide to Therapeutic Water Ex-ercises. She inspired us all to think seriously about heading for the pool to join her class.

The ladies came dressed in up-

scale tropical attire and dined on Mahi Mahi as well as a

new power salad de-signed for the occasion

b y our innovative chef, Daniel Storino.

Alice Fugitt and her dec-

orating com-mittee came up

with a delight-ful centerpiece

that was not only inventive, but beautiful, and en-tertaining, as well. Inside the glass

bowl, lighted from the inside with a waterproof LED light, swam a beautiful Beta. After the luncheon each fish was adopted and found their way to their new homes.

And, YES! We did have a Wet T-Shirt Contest. A little different than most. It was won by Tammy Hughes. We’ll leave it to Tammy to tell you how she won the win-ning ‘shirt’.

Think about joining us in July. It’s our annual yummy summer buffet. Dress in all things red, white and blue and we are stag-ing another photo opportunity to celebrate the 4th of July. Lots of fun, camaraderie, and surprises. Join us on July 14th. You’ll have a firecracker good time. For more information, contact President, Andi Hicks at 818-427-5650.
