Dear CNC Members, I need to extend my sincere apologizes for the lateness of this edition of Colonial Bear Fare. In addition to

an injury to my right arm and hand, I also encounted several problems putting together this newsletter. I recently switched from the Windows platform to a Mac and have been wrestling with compability issues. If you can name it, I think I’ve grappled with it (and a few Gremlins) in this issue!!

The dearth of pictures in this issue is entirely mine. Sandy Stultz, Debbie and Jeff Dennison all sent me stunning pictures, and I have not been able to properly resize and include them. Brad Cole has done his usual excellent job of providing superb pictures of CNC events; sadly, I have only been able to use a few of them.

It’s Water Test Time! AKA

“The Diaries of Lady Calza”

Lady Calza and I went to the CNC’s Annual Water Test this year to enjoy the camaraderie and photograph the events. The water test was held August 24 to August 26 at Codorus State Park in Hanover, PA. Water Dog (WD) and Water Rescue Dog (WRD) tests were both held on Saturday and Sunday, while Water Rescue Dog Expert (WRDX) test was held on Friday. Calza and I got there nice and early on Friday. We reconnected with some friends from the SENC who were attending all of the tests this year. We also bumped into a serious amateur photographer with some nice digital equipment. We traded “war stories” and generally had a good time talking. Many pictures were taken and many good times were shared. Saturday was the first day for the WD and WRD tests. The junior test (WD) was held first, with the control section being held at 8:30 in the morning. Fun seemed to be had by all, even though the weather wasn’t quite as nice as it had been for the WRDX on Friday. Lunch was held after the WD exercises. The WRD exercises resumed after lunch. The new friend with the fancy digital camera equipment even donned a wet suit and got in the water to photograph. Mind you, he got in the water OUTSIDE of the test area where he would not affect the performance of the entrants. He later quipped that it would have been the LAST TIME he got in the water like that if he happened to drop his gear! Sunday had the worst weather of the three-day event. The early morning start of the WD exercises was postponed for twenty minutes do to thundershowers. The rain DID eventually clear off and the festivities began in earnest. This time, the WRD exercises started immediately after the WD. We then took a break for lunch after two or three dogs went through the test. The remaining WRD entrants went after lunch. I would like to thank the Club and its volunteers for putting on such a nice event. Calza and I are also thankful that there were no hurricanes or earthquakes to upset this year’s events like in years past! -Brad Cole

‘tis the time for Holidays! By Dr. Brian Wessels DVM, MmedSc --many thanks to the Newfletter Team from Bear Mountain Newfoundland Club for their kind permission to reprint this article from their fall Newfletter and, of course, thanks to Dr. Wessels! Holidays also means lots of candy and cookie time for the kids. Can our pets be harmed during the festive season from candy and cookies? Let us have a look at a few problem sweets and some warning signs to watch out for:

1. Raw dough toxicity – Homemade bread and cookies are fun to make but involve raw dough. Beware, our dogs love raw bread and cookie dough. If swallowed this raw dough can ferment in the stomach and will release gas and ethanol alcohol. The first signs may occur 30-60 minutes after ingestion, but it usually takes 2 hours or more. The gas can produce a distended stomach (bloat) and loss of coordination, loss of bladder control, vocalization, and behavioral changes with central nerve depression. So, keep the dogs away from raw dough, especially bread dough.

2. Xylitol – Sugar free candy is usually artificially sweetened with xylitol. When a dog swallows xylitol this sweetener can cause a rapid and major decrease in blood sugar. Observe your dog for the following signs: fatigue, irregular heart rate (feel for the pulse on the inside of the hind leg half way between the groin and knee joint), irregular breathing, seizures, coma and even possible death.

3. Raisins, grapes, prunes and plums – These fruits, especially raisins, are all potentially dangerous for a dog. Just a handful of raisins can be fatal. The actual cause of this type of toxicity is unknown. A 1/2 ounce of grapes or a 1/4 ounce of raisins per pound of dog is the estimated minimum amount that could cause problems. If the dogs have consumed a lot of grapes, prunes, plums, and especially raisins watch for irregular heart and respiratory rates, vomiting, diarrhea, very foamy and bloody urine, restlessness, to end with possible kidney failure.

4. Macadamia nut toxicity – These nuts are enjoyed by both people and their dogs. However, if a dog manages to eat 1/4- 1/2 a pound of nuts per 1 pound of body weight then you may observe symptoms within 3-12 hours. Observe for lethargy, vomiting and hyperthermia (increased body temperature). These are the early signs. Later the dog may develop tremors, joint pain and hind leg paralysis. Most fortunately these symptoms are usually resolved over 24 hours if the dog vomited the nuts.

5. Theobromine toxicity - Chocolates have a chemical substance known as theobromine. Dark chocolate contains more of this substance than light colored chocolates. Theobromine is a long lasting, very potent toxin that can cause death. If a dog consumes enough theobromine the symptoms of poisoning will occur. Initially, the dog will develop abdominal pain and vomiting which may contain blood. The vomitus in most cases will contain substantial amounts of chocolate, giving it a very characteristic smell. The dog may be restless, drooling saliva and could have difficulty standing or walking. Increased thirst is also common. As the syndrome progresses, in the more severely affected dogs, there is an increased rate of breathing, muscle tremors, or muscle rigidity. Urine may contain blood and the gums may take on an easily noticed bluish color. If not detected early a dog can develop convulsions and die. In the majority of cases, the symptoms occur within a few hours, but they have been known to be delayed for as long as 24 hours. It can also take as long as three days for the dog to recover completely.

2014 NCA National Specialty

The year opened with everything proceeding along quite nicely. Since CNC had already hosted the 2006 NCA National Specialty at Rocky Gap Lodge Resort and Conference Center, and since many of the same 'players' were our primary contacts – well, life was good. Then July happened, and the wheels proceeded to come off the wagon. Tuesday, July 17th to be precise. The 'Acting' General Manager called to cancel our contract with the Resort. And, yes, while they did return our deposit, and yes, even covered our expenses to the Park – we, the CNC were left with no location to host a National. Want the definition of 'whirling dervish??’ Try telling the Paxton's, your prez – Hamilton, and Don Sharkey, "guess this can't be done." Within three weeks, we had contacted, worked with and either discarded or been discarded by three locations (OUCH !!) However, Don persevered, and we all trekked up to Lancaster, PA. There, we met the already “Well-Versed in Hosting Specialties Staff ” of Lancaster Host Resort & Conference Center. With NCA approval, we signed a contract with them five weeks to the day of the fateful phone call from Rocky Gap. Since we were able to obtain the exact same dates, and our judges were still available -– we were able to draft new contracts for their signatures; and all agreed !! As of this writing, everything is on schedule – and we have all paws crossed that this continues. Thanks, Kathy Hamilton, President, CNC

Of Fall and Fun with Newfies AKA

“The Diaries of Lady Calza” The Fall Fun Day is a popular CNC event. For those who have not been to one of these events, Downs Park is in Pasadena, Maryland and is a WONDERFUL place to have a Fall Newfoundland event, since it is right on Chesapeake Bay. This year’s event was held September 23, 2012 and was hosted by Chuck and Cookie Basham. They did their usual wonderful job, as a good time was had by all. That the event was held on a SUNDAY was much appreciated since the scheduling helped me avoid traffic in both directions around Washington. Calza and I arrived at the Fall Fun Day site just after 9:00. People were arriving and things were getting set up for the big event. Most people arrived by 11:00 at which time the hot dogs and hamburgers were put on the grill. Some people went down to the dog beach and let their Newfies swim. Several events took place after lunch. A local veterinarian gave a talk about maladies that affect Newfoundlands. There were also games which everybody seemed to enjoy. Poor Cookie Basham tried to play “Musical Newfs” with my Calza but Calza wasn’t terribly cooperative. The dressed Newfoundland race was also fun to watch. The event was over too soon; Calza and I would like to personally thank Chuck and Cookie Basham for hosting this very successful event! -Brad Cole

Lady Calza Meets the ‘Frankenstorm AKA

“The Diaries of Lady Calza” The Colonial Newfoundland Club (CNC) holds its Annual Regional Specialty in conjunction with the Middleburg Kennel Club show that is held the last weekend of October. This year’s event coincided with a large hurricane moving up the East Coast, projected to make contact with a large cool front headed across the country, making for a super sized or monster storm. Named Sandy, the hurricane was christened “Frankenstorm” because of the damage this super-sized storm was expected to create. The show was being held at Oatlands Plantation outside of Leesburg, Virginia. Saturday, October 27th was the first day of the Regional Specialty. After we arrived, Calza and I headed straight for the CNC hospitality tent and we met up with a lot of friends. Calza got to meet new Newfs! Sunday’s turnout was not as large, as the “Frankenstorm” was supposed to hit by the evening; the storm held off, so a good time was STILL had by all. Calza and I had to return home on Monday, the day Sandy hit the area. Fortunately, nobody else seemed to be traveling between Manassas and Williamsburg. Calza, the Frankenstorm and I had the road mostly to ourselves. -Brad Cole

BOD Awards Chair - Titles awarded in 2012: 6 GCh, 4 Ch, 3 WRD, 1 CD, 8 RN, 1 RA, 1 RE, 3 CGC, 1 TDI, 1 OAP, 1 OJP, 1 UDX, 1 NJP, 1 ROM CNC Brown Bag Chair Report for December 2012 - I have been installed in the Kathy Paxton, "we can get her to do anything program". Ask me once and I will do it forever..... I started with CNC water test brown bag this August. Thanks to my husband Ronald who always sells the tickets and drags the boxes around for me; what a turnout of great donations and money, too. We had 2 big brown bag auctions and had a large crowd. We had pictures, toys, bandanas, bibs, towels and water related items and more! Then in October we did it again at our CNC regional to support our big dogs at the show at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg Virginia. It was a glorious day and everyone was there. Many people sent money and great doggie things. Cindy Flowers still had items from last year when we had the surprise snowstorm. She had baskets full of doggie delights decorated with fall flowers and then I arrived and jammed them full of bandanas, towels, bibs and books. We even had a utility cart donated by Kandy Adams. It was really a fun day to see everyone and all those slobbery faces. Then we had cake for a members birthday Adam Bystol! Not sure if he was surprised or not but we all loved that chocolate cake Karin brought!! Now its getting cooler so its time for the draft test , lunch and brown bag in November. Hey thanks everyone for all the great donations, it was a big success. We even had a sleigh drawn by small Newfies for the auction. Just imagine...small Newfies.. Well, there was some fighting over that ticket bag it was so darn cute. Everyone put a ticket in. We had a great lunch and then the auction and trophies. It was a nice afternoon. I want to thank all CNC members and their friends for the enormous amount of donations you send for these brown bag auctions. It might not seem like alot but each toy or item you donate brings a smile to someones face and or the delight of their dog. We really need your support for these auctions because it helps defray the cost of the events we have and helps the club to continue with the higher cost of well everything. So thank you thank you thank you and I will be seeing you all again soon. Put those unused items in the closet and watch for special things when you shop because "I will be back!!! Merry Christmas to all! Peggy Ann Darling

CNC Education Chair: January 2012 C.N.C. Annual Education Report Submitted December 4, 2012 By Dotty Hudson, Education Chair Spring Fun Day at Accotink Park, Spring Field Virginia on May 12, 2012. Lynne Bettinger, CCPDT, is a professional dog trainer and behaviorist. She is a freelance writer for AKC Canine Health Foundation newsletter and Humane Society (HSUS) magazine, and the Examiner.com as the DC Dogs Examiner. Lynne is a Board Member and founder of Hero Dogs, Inc. Lynne spoke at our Fun Day on information and demonstrations to get Newfoundland dogs registered, prepared and to pass the Canine Good Citizens test. Ashley Evans and Holli Shan of Olde Towne Pet Resort are both licensed Canine Massage Therapists. They spoke and demonstrated the benefit of massage for Newfoundland dogs. They concentrated on the specific needs of the joint issues and senior Newfies. Fall Fun Day at Downs Park, Pasadena, Maryland on September 23, 2012 Dr. Darren Roa, DVM, Diplomate ACVS specialist in Orthopedic Surgery. He spoke on Newfoundland Orthopedics. Prevention, needs, surgeries, rehab issues. Gina Stanford has joined me on Education Committee.

Ways & Means – soft goods - This year, CNC was fortunate to have Cookie Basham handling our soft goods. Cookie made arrangements to become acquainted with CNC's artwork at the Spider Web in Westminster, MD. She was quite involved in the product selection, artwork, web advertising, (she does have an advantage here being married to our web master) and being at the events to sell our soft goods generating money to fund our events and to assist Rescue. There were many requests for items with a Landseer on it, and items in fleece. Cookie came up with fleece jackets and vests with Landseer designs. Also, baseball caps were sold this year. We are trying to offer a wider range of Newfoundland clothing for the members. New ideas and requests are always welcome. Sales have been brisk and the last of our sweats, jackets and vests are accompanying her to Williamsburg. Gross sales have been about $3,000. for the year.

CNC Working Dog - Annual Report 2012 -Dwight Gorsuch After canceling the 2011 Draft Test due to low entry the decision was made to separate the DT from the Williamsburg Christmas Parade weekend in order to host a 2 day event in Northern VA in November 2012. The 2012 CNC Draft Tests were held on November 17 & 18 with an entry of five. Informal Open Swim dates were scheduled approx. every two weeks from June to late September and held at Codorus in PA and were at times well attended. CNC held our annual Formal Water Workshop at Codorus on June 9/10, 2012. The workshop instructors were CNC Members John & Cindy Flowers. The event was very educational, fun and profitable for CNC. CNC’s Annual Water Test was held at Codorus on August 24-26. For the most part the weather cooperated and the test ran very smoothly. We are working now on scheduling 2013 CNC Working events starting with our Open Swim dates. Thank you to all the CNC Members who volunteered their time, experience, gas money and more, working so hard to make this year’s working events successful. We cannot do this without you!

CNC 2012 Water Test - Tests Held: Friday August, 24th - WRDX Saturday August 25th - WD / WRD Sunday August 26th - WD / WRD Evaluation of the Test Site: The tests were held at Lake Marburg in Codorus State Park, Hanover, PA. The test site is at the bottom of a large hill, around the bend from the main boat lauch site for the park. The beach consists of mainly small- medium sized rocks and pebbles and extends ~ 15 feet out into the water before dogs are swimming. The water condition varies depending on the weather and the number of boat craft going by. Swimming is not allowed. However, the Codorus State Park rangers have agreed to allow Colonial Newfoundland club to not only hold the annual water test there, but also give us the opportunity to work with and train our dogs at several water training sessions and a water training clinic held earlier in the season. A thank you of brownies and other baked goods were much appreciated by the ranger staff. This year the park was hosting a fishing tournament on Friday and Saturday and parking spaces were limited. Each day the tournament was finished by 2 pm, and there were no complications/ conflicts Overall the weekend weather was decent. We had sunny- partly cloudy skies for the Friday and Saturday tests, however on Sunday, the test was delayed on account of rain and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. Despite the weather delay, we were able to complete the testing of all of our junior and senior dogs – including 2 re-qualifying Newfs and a skilled Leonberger who had bumped up from the junior division. Evaluation of the Judges: Bethany Karger and Cathe Archer: I cannot say enough good things about these two women. They worked efficiently and were a great team the entire weekend. They were always kind and helpful in answering any of the questions posed by stewards, exhibitors and spectators alike. Their good humor, wisdom and advice was appreciated by everyone at the test. It is quite clear that these two ladies have a deep knowledge and love of working with their newfies. We would be honored to have them judge again at future water tests. Exhibitors: Water Tests Entrants included members of our local and other clubs covering Connecticut, Maryland, North Caroline, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. We even had a very skilled Leonberger who tested and passed his WD during the weekend. Friday's WRDX test had 3 entries (1 pulled) Saturday's Junior and Senior Divisions had 9 (8 newfies, 1 Leonberger) and 11 entrants respectively. (1 pulled) Sunday's test had 9 juniors (8 newfies and 1 Leonberger) and 8 senior entrants. (4 pulled) Advertising: Ads were placed in NewfTide and CNC’s newsletter, and the tests were listed on both websites. The Hanover Evening Sun sent a reporter on Thursday when people were working their dogs prior to the test. The Article appeared on the front page of Friday's paper. In addition, 2 local TV affiliates had a reporter with a camera on site on both Friday and Saturday. Reports were aired on Friday evening @ 5:30 and 6:00 on Harrisburg's ABC 27 news, and on Sunday – 10 pm FOX 43 news. Spectators : Codorus is a large public park, and many people came by to watch go during the weekend. During this year's test there was a large fishing competition, so there were a lot of boats on the lake, accompanied by trucks and trailers in the parking lot. Other common watercraft included windsurfers, kayakers and canoes. Training: Although Codorus has a “no swimming “policy, they do allow CNC members a special permit to train there on certain weekends during the summer. We also held a 2-day water workshop there in mid-June.

Problems: Other than the occasional article flying out 125 ft plus on the lake due to sudden current, and the rain delay on Sunday we had little to no problems during the test. Our test committee, stewards and volunteers worked like a seasoned team to keep the test running smoothly and consistently all weekend long. Submitted By: Karin Bystol, CNC 2012 Water Test Chair C.N.C. Rescue Report Submitted: November 6, 2012 By: Donna McConn One rescue was brought in.

• A 4-year old named Bella from West Virginia was given up to do divorce. The owner could not longer keep her because she was moving into a place that did not allow large dogs. She was taken to a foster in Northern Virginia who has adopted her.

Updates on fosters/adoptions:

• Sadie (4 years old) has been adopted by Nicole Branson (a club member) in Richmond, Virginia. • Sam (10 years old) has been adopted by Karen Johnson in Indian Head, Maryland. • Boo/Boomer is still in foster however they have said they will adopt him. They are working

through some issues with him and want to make sure they can handle him. The wife just found out she is pregnant and is already having a difficult time with the pregnancy. She was bedridden with her son. Kathy Paxton has assisted via telephone with addressing the issues that they are having with him. They have been doing basic obedience classes with him.

• Misha and Natasha are still with Donna. Yes, it has been a year. There is a 90% possibility they will be in a home in December! (Don’t want to jinx it.) I did a home visit this past weekend for them. The potential adopters have no other pets and a nice large fenced in yard around their home. I took the girls with me and they were so happy! They have 2 vacations planned in the next 6 weeks and would take the girls before Christmas.

• Bella (above) has been adopted to Margaret Marcus (a club member) in Broadlands, Virginia. Miscellaneous:

• Donna has been contacted for one surrender. She is a 4-year-old female. The owner purchased her as a puppy from a breeder in the NY area. He got married recently and his wife’s stepson is frightened of dogs. The owner stated that the dog growls at the son and then the son runs out of the room. Dave Rothschild has done an evaluation on the dog. Dave does not see any aggression with the dog. He provided the owner with some training and helpful suggestions for them to work with her. He wants to try to keep the dog.

No private adoptions were done.
