Brought to you monthly by Cathy and her team at your local cafe
Winter trading hours
It was getting a bit too dark down at the Harbour at 6pm, so the
Kiama Farmers’ Market has brought things forward an hour, and is
now operating from 2-5pm over winter.
If you haven’t made it down there yet, make sure you do soon.
There is such a good community atmosphere and an ever increasing
variety of fruit and vegetables and quality prepared food on hand.
The Café has a stall down there as often as we can fit it in, depend-
ing on our catering commitments. Our cakes and take-home meals
have attracted a strong following.

Chrissie’s book
reaches the shelves For those of you who have been with the Café since our
early days, you’ll remember the wonderful Chrissie Paice
who worked here mid-week a few years ago. Her infect-
ious laughter and wit made her a great favourite with our
regulars and an engaging person to share a kitchen with.
But her real work was always her writing, firstly poetry and then
books. In 2009 the poem she wrote about the death of another
Café colleague, Kath Effield, won her Australia’s most prestigious
poetry prize. And then found success with The Great Rock Whale.
In a real labour of love, for the past three years she has been
working full-time on a novel that had its genesis twenty years ago.
According to her publisher, Allen & Unwin, “The Word Ghost is a
funny, moving story about what it means to find love, lose love and
discover who you are when you live in a village with no street
lights and a decidedly dark side.”
As they say in the classics, now available at all good bookshops!
Details: You are invited
to the launch of
Chrissie’s book
by William Verity
on Friday 13 June, Kiama
Library, 7 for 7.30pm.

Go the Socceroos! What better place to watch the Socceroos
play their hearts out for the World Cup in
Brazil than at the Jamberoo Pub, the senti-
mental home of Australian soccer. Johnny
Warren’s family has organised a real Rio
atmosphere - think drums, dancers and food!
The first round matches which will be played
live on a big screen at the Pub are:
- Fri 13 June: v Chile 8am
- Weds 18 June: v The Netherlands 2am (!)
- Mon 23 June: v Spain 2am.
Other times will be scheduled as the competi-
ton continues. It’s much more fun to barrack
in a group than risk falling asleep on the couch
at home, so why not make your way out there
to enjoy the action.
See the whales
from another angle
It’s great to see that Kiama now has whale
watching tours. I’ve spoken to a couple of
people who’ve been out already, and they
had a great time. The cruises set out three
times each Saturday and Sunday.

It is experiences like this, stand-up
paddle boarding, surf schools, the Kiama
Coast Walk and the burgeoning food industry
that will help Kiama keep attracting visitors.

Following the runaway success of last year’s Gatsby Night,
the Kiama Jazz & Blues Club is now intent on transporting
you to New Orleans for its iconic Carnival.
The masked dinner dance is the Club’s major fundraiser
for the March Jazz & Blues Festival - funds that are sorely
needed to keep this event going given the lack of govern-
ment funding. There are three bands playing, including
Café favourite Dr Don’s Double Dose, and it is byo supper
and drinks. Go on, book a table now! It’s your chance to
dress up and dance the night away.
Details: Saturday 26 July, 7pm
The Pavilion Kiama. Tickets $40 pp
or $35 for Jazz Club members -
seated at tables of 8.
As an extra service, you can now
log on to our wifi while you are
visiting the café. Just ask us for
the day’s password, and respect
our hospitality.

and the AGM dinner for the Kiama Alpine
Club, highlights the Café as an ideal venue
for intimate gatherings of up to 40 people.
We’ve hosted birthday parties, Christmas
parties, afternoon teas, club AGMs, baby
showers and more. When we provide food
for the occasion, there is no room hire fee.
