Beachmere Sands. FEB-MAR 2020 On a twice-weekly basis, our most competitive Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Sands card players join forces with their equivalents from Beachmere Bay to play Bridge. It’s a game perfect for this kind of inter-resort activity, pitting card players’ strategic minds with some good old fashioned social fun! The Inter-Village Bridge Group is organised by Beachmere Bay resident Stuart West. Stuart and his wife Angela (pictured above, centre back row) were among the first residents of Beachmere Bay in May 2018, with Stuart working quickly to gather a group of Bridge enthusiasts. “I love the mental challenge,” Stuart says. “As you get older, a game like Bridge is good for your mental faculties. The challenge of Bridge keeps me young at heart - maybe not physically, but definitely mentally!” Did you know, Bridge has documented origins in Italy and France dating back to the 1500s? For those interested in this very popoular game, Stuart’s weekly Bridge program includes: Saturday, 9am: Mini Bridge. This is an easier version of the standard game, without the bidding process. Wednesday, 9am: The main weekly game. Thursday, 1.30pm: Lessons. Hosted by Stuart and other experienced players, Mini Bridge players use this lesson time to learn to play the standard game. Stuart says all games and lessons are hosted in the Beachmere Bay library. He says beginners are always welcome and it only takes a couple of months’ worth of lessons to be a confident player. If you’re keen to join in the fun, contact Stuart West (Beachmere Bay, Villa 15). A great deal.

On a twice-weekly basis, our most competitive Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Sands card players join forces with their equivalents from Beachmere Bay to play Bridge.

The challenge of Bridge keeps me young at heart - maybe not physically, but definitely mentally!”

Did you know, Bridge has documented origins in Italy and France dating back to the 1500s? For those interested in this very popoular game, Stuart’s weekly Bridge program includes:

• Saturday, 9am: Mini Bridge. This is an easier version of the standard game, without the bidding process.

• Wednesday, 9am: The main weekly game.

• Thursday, 1.30pm: Lessons.

What’s happening.F E B RUA RY - M A RC H

Welcome to our first newsletter for 2020! It’s been a great start to the New Year with lots of welcome rain to quench our very dry and thirsty lawns and gardens.

All the resort’s regular activities are up and running again after the holidays and the residents are looking forward to the introduction of line dancing in February. Line dancing is a fun exercise for the mind and body and is widely known to be one of the best forms of aerobic exercise for people with ageing bodies.

The regular weekly shopping trips are still popular with full buses each week - we all love our ‘retail therapy’! Cooks’ night out is also up and running again with the first venue being Bribie RSL.

A new electronic meal system has been recently introduced to the resort. Residents are able to register each week for their weekly meal on their home computer or on a tablet in the Clubhouse and although it has been challenging for the not-so tech savvy residents, they are now embracing the new system.

The four-hole golf course and croquet courts are getting better by the week. Thank you to the tireless volunteer residents who spend hours each week mowing, fertilising and weeding the courts.

The Beach House was definitely the place to be over the summer holidays with daily bookings from Beachmere residents spending time with their family and friends in this incredible facility.

And finally, as I will soon be leaving Beachmere Sands and transferring to another Palm Lake Resort, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the residents for the fantastic learning experience over the last 4.5 years. I have met some wonderful people and have been privileged to work in this beautiful resort.

Boot-scootin’ benefits.

Festive season follow up.The festive season was exactly that, here at Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Sands. There was a Christmas Tree Trimming party before the actual Christmas Party (both events pictured here). And then, of course, we rang in the New Year! By the nature of our resort, we have quite the social community and it’s great to see everyone enjoying spending time together. Thanks must go to Joycee for organising both events - she does a great job! Photos courtesy of Brad Kinross

Dancing. It’s the simple, fun and cost-free fitness that science says benefits us in more ways than one. According to multiple studies, dancing can help us combat depression and anxiety, improve our strength, balance and mobility, and even reduce our reliance on pain medication.

In 2013, a team from the University of New England in New South Wales and Australian National University in Canberra recruited 41 people (aged up to 73 years and mainly well-educated) with complaints of stress, anxiety and depression. Twenty participants then took eight tango sessions of 90 minutes each over a two-week period, while the 21 in the control group were put on a waiting list for classes. At the end of the study, participants showed significant reductions in depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia. Satisfaction with life and self-efficacy were significantly increased. At the one-month follow-up, depression, anxiety and stress levels remained reduced. The research team concluded that a brief program of tango dance was shown to be an effective strategy in alleviating mood disorders.

Young or old – or somewhere in between – dancing regularly has also been proven to improve confidence, positivity and even social skills. Line dancing is a favourite pastime among residents of many Palm Lake Resorts across the country and it’s coming to Beachmere Sands in February! Line dancing instructor and Palm Lake Resort Upper Coomera resident Libby Jensen says line dancing allows participants of all levels to join in without feeling separate or standing out.

“Learning together while having fun is a great way for our neighbours to form friendships,” Libby says. “As we age, issues of balance when changing direction and concentration arise. Line dancing is an excellent and fun way to maintain these skills.”

“Then there are the social aspects, the camaraderie, following directions - and it’s fun! The whole reason that dancing in particular is good is because of the rhythm and music and the endorphin release. It’s taking your mind to a different place and you’re able to cope better with everything.”

A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS SIMPLY A LIST. HERE’S WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE SETTING GOALS, WHATEVER YOUR AGE. AND AT THIS TIME OF THE (NEW) YEAR, GOAL SETTING CAN BE EVEN MORE REWARDING...

Got goals? Having something to look forward to can trigger a surge of dopamine (your reward hormone) and serotonin (the hormone that helps with sleep and relieves pain and bad moods). Many of us use food or alcohol to trigger these hormones but when we feel them in response to setting, projecting and reaching new goals, we feel successful, capable, confident and relaxed.

“When you are goal-oriented, you develop a more resilient emotional version of yourself,” says naturopath, author and speaker Nicky Wise. “But as we move into a slower, less demanding phase of our lives, not having a time-orientated deadline to work to can feel foreign and, for some, downright disorienting.”

The benefits of setting goals in retirement are manifold: it can bring a sense of purpose or connection, prevent regression into despondency, depression and disconnection and keep things interesting and engaging.

“Matching your goals to suit your stage of retirement is important,” Nicky says. “If you are just entering your retirement and still in the working rhythm, you may need to set goals that will keep you busy with moderate time expectations. Alternatively, if you are older, your goals may focus on improving your personal health and wellbeing. Science tells us that our life satisfaction increases when you have a purpose. Setting and achieving your goals will help you find that purpose.”

HERE ARE NICKY’S TOP TIPS ON HOW TO SET GOALS:

1. Set SMART goals (‘Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely’). Write out your goals and display them where you can see them.2. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t achieve your goal on the first try, or your first attempt doesn’t go to plan – you have time to reset and review, which is vital to goal setting success.3. Set a goal that involves learning something new or attempting something you’ve never tried before.
