The truth about Thanksgiving

William B. Newell, a Penobscot Indian and former chairman of the An-thropology department at the University of Connecticut, says that the first official Thanksgiving Day celebrated the massacre of 700 Indian men, women and children during one of their religious ceremonies.

"Thanksgiving Day" was first proclaimed by the Governor of the then Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637 to commemorate the massa-cre of 700 men, women and children who were celebrating their an-nual Green Corn Dance (Feast of Tabernacles) .

Governor John Winthrop proclaimed an official "Day of Thanksgiving" in 1637 to celebrate the return of men from the Pequot War in Mystic, Connecticut, in which colonists allied with Mohegan and Narragansett tribes to defeat the Pequot.

More than 700 Pequot women, children, and men died in the war, which were massacred. In 1863, during the American Civil War, Presi-dent Abraham Lincoln authorized that the fourth Thursday of Novem-ber be set aside to give thanks and praise for the nation's blessings. Thanksgiving became part of American culture.

Andrew Jackson: A man nicknamed “Indian

killer” and “Sharp Knife” surely deserves the

top spot on a list of worst U.S. Presidents. An-

drew Jackson “was a forceful proponent of the

Indian Removal Act in May 28, 1830, which

became law. the Cherokee nation was forced to

give up its lands east of the Mississippi River and to migrate to an area in present-

day Oklahoma. The Cherokee people called this journey the "Trail of Tears," be-

cause of its devastating effects. Others have a less genteel way of describing the

seventh president of the United States. Jackson, also a slave owner, had a wall in

the white house with the skin of native Americans draped on it. He created leather

from native Americans largely gathered from tribes which had peaceful relations

with the US government before he decided he wanted the land owned by Spain in

the south

1800s while he sat in the saddle and orchestrated the entire

scene. His troopers made coin purses from the scrotums of

Before Chivington and his men left the area, they plundered

the tipis and took the horses. After the smoke cleared, Chiv-

ington's men came back and killed many of the wounded.
