Welcome From the ChairmanAs I embark on my second year as the Chairman of Fort Ticonderoga’s Board, several thoughts cross my mind. This year, we are interpreting the year 1776 and, specifically, the Pennsylvania troops who served at Fort Ticonderoga under General

Anthony Wayne. In October of 1776, Wayne acknowledged his heavy dependence on his troops and expressed his unshakeable belief that “when call’d to action they will shew themselves whorthy of the noble cause they are engag’d to defend.”

We are now the stewards of the noble cause which is the preservation, growth and celebration of our international treasure, Fort Ticonderoga. We depend heavily on you, our army of donors, friends and guests, for our life blood, and we have an unshakeable belief that, when called to action, you will show yourselves worthy, as you have done so loyally and generously in years past.

Our remarkable gains over the past four years could not have occurred without the spark that our President and CEO Beth Hill has provided. She, in turn, will quickly point to an incredible staff, legions of volunteers, devoted Friends of Fort Ti and faithful donors, who have provided many more sparks that ignited the flame.

For this, and your continued enthusiasm, dedication and support that guarantees the fulfillment of our noble cause, we are grateful. Thank you!

Board of Trustees

“My lifelong love of history began at Fort Ticonderoga as a boy. History is global and multicultural so my interest has led Anne and me to make friends and to enjoy amazing experiences all over the world. One of my life goals is to pass this passion for history along to other people, particularly the younger generations.”

John T. Beaty, Jr., Bethesda, MD

The spark that ignites the flame!Standing on the Fort’s southeast bastion, overlooking Lake Champlain with Vermont’s Green Mountains beyond, I can almost feel the presence of the giants that have gone before – Montcalm, victorious over a huge British force in 1758 at the Battle of Carillon; Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold, leading America’s First Victory of the Revolution, May 10, 1775; Henry Knox and his noble train of artillery, departing Fort

Ticonderoga in the winter of 1776 and forcing the British evacuation of Boston the following March.

As a historian, I stand in awe of William Ferris Pell’s 19th century landmark preservation, the first of its kind in America, and in the 20th century, how museum founders Stephen and Sarah Pell led a monumental restoration of the Fort, again, a first. These leaders were bright sparks that ignited the flames of action and inspiration.

Today we continue that proud Fort Ticonderoga legacy. You — our teammates, leaders, donors, and volunteers continue to lead and inspire. As a result, we see something truly remarkable, what we call “the Fort Ticonderoga Effect,” the power of a place and a story to transcend time and remain with all those that touch the site for life. Our operating progress continues; since 2011, we are up 14% in operating revenues, 15% in admission revenues, 54% in Friends memberships, 6% in attendance, and 20% in contributions. Our 2013 donor count grew 21% from 2012 thanks in part to our volunteer “FORTifier” and “Friends of Fort Ticonderoga” programs.

Your generous support enabled us to double our reach to school children in 2013, welcoming some 23,000 students as we launched the Fort Ticonderoga Teacher Institute and increased on-site field trips (+25%) and scout attendance (+83%).

All of this is a testimony to what Fort Ticonderoga is today. Every day, we continue to tell stories that chronicle our individual and collective struggles, failures, sacrifices, doubts, and ultimately victories. As those stories inspire us, they must and will be passed along to future generations. That is our noble cause. Thank you for making it possible.

“As a teenager, I had no idea how far the Fort Ticonderoga Fife & Drum Corps would take me, or allow me to take others, on a journey of discovery and preservation. Now 40 years later, that spark which so quickly grew to a passionate flame, burns just as bright as ever, fueling my excitement each summer! The interpretive programs and support I receive as the leader of the corps, allow me to ignite a similar spark in the current fifers and drummers, and the Fort’s many visitors.”

mplementing an experiential learning approach across the 2000-acre Fort Ticonderoga

learning campus has yielded many new program ideas and experiences for Fort guests. In 2013, Fort Ticonderoga unveiled new Scout programs, including an overnight adventure providing an immersive experience. Field trip attendance soared as schools lined up for the multi-disciplined “To Act as One United Body”

program where students become new recruits fighting for American independence. Year-round learning opportunities — seminars, trades workshops, and living history weekends — attracted a growing winter-time audience. A dramatic initiative was the fuller use of Fort Ticonderoga’s historic landscape. A new Carillon Battlefield hiking trail was unveiled in the spring of 2013 as was a self-guided canoe

tour on Lake Champlain. Integrating other experiences in the gardens and on our agricultural land, we created a multi-day, multi-dimensional experience attracting a broader segment of young and young-at-heart that experienced the power of the story and the site. Fort Ticonderoga’s experiential learning ignites the fire in our guest’s mind!

Investing in a Noble Cause hanks to your generous support, Fort Ticonderoga is

able to protect and preserve 2000 acres of historic landscape, two miles of Lake Champlain shoreline, 27 historic structures, the Carillon Battlefield, and a world-renowned museum collection. One of our most important historic structures, the Pavilion, received much needed attention in 2013. Funded in part by a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and The Perkin Fund, along with many other generous donations, we were able to embark on significant research on the building which will inform future plans for its use. The Pavilion, spanning nearly two centuries of Fort Ticonderoga’s history, is a

critical thread binding together the stories of landmark preservation, the birth of American tourism, and monumental restoration that encompasses why Fort Ticonderoga exists today. This summer the structure will continue to serve as a learning laboratory, engaging guests in the process of discovery, helping them to understand how we learn from the past, and enabling a new understanding of this important building’s history. This is part of a much larger planning process now underway as Fort Ticonderoga builds a major 10-year plan that will demonstrate how we can reach out greatest potential as a major destination in New York State.

s the only site in the world that tells a new story

every year, Fort Ticonderoga’s Department of Interpretation was recently honored by the Museum Association of New York. Our revolutionary approach to interpretation has resulted in a unique opportunity for our guests to experience a new story every day through programs that follow the seasonal arch. This flows through every aspect of the Fort Ticonderoga experience and across its entire landscape. It supports the Fort Ticonderoga Teacher Institute, launched in 2013. Teachers from across America spent a week immersed in a residential program integrating original collections,

historic landscape, and interpretive learning opportunities. Their experience has exponentially sparked new learning scenarios for their classrooms, enabling Fort Ticonderoga to significantly increase its reach to students in 2013. We have become a nationally recognized leader in teacher education, receiving the prestigious National Endowment for Humanities Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops for School Teachers grant, supporting workshops in the summer of 2014. The Fort Ticonderoga Teacher Institute will also continue this summer with a focus on 1776 at Ticonderoga.

Every gift to Fort Ticonderoga helps us to advance our mission. We are especially grateful to supporters of our Fort Ticonderoga Fund (names in bold), which underwrites everyday operations. We also thank the Friends of Fort Ticonderoga, (red asterisks) who support our mission while receiving membership benefits.

This listing reflects gifts made from January 1-December 31, 2013. Please let us know of any errors or omissions. Thank you!

“I first visited Fort Ticonderoga in the early 1960s and was entranced. I returned in 1995 to lead a staff ride for a group of senior military officers and was enchanted all over again. That visit led to more rides, a book, and a personal commitment to this remarkable site. At Fort Ticonderoga we reconnect with our past. A visitor catches the reverberations of seminal events in American history – ‘the echoes of musket and cannon shot, the shouts of command, the flap of canvas and creaking of oars, and even – with some effort – the near silent padding of moccasin-shod feet.’ It is a unique and precious place, which I will continue to visit for years to come.”
