If you haven’t secured your ticket yet please do so by Tuesday morning at the latest, since we need to let the suppliers know in advance how many will attend. Please call or come by the office for your ticket(s) if you didn’t get them after Mass today. This past Wednesday I had the pleasure of blessing the facilities now being used for the

temporary site of the new St. John Paul II Academy down at the Star of the Sea Center. The lower floor has 4

classrooms and school office with renewed washrooms, and the main floor has the gymnasium now equipped with basketball hoops and a fresh surface. The staff, students, and parents were all very happy and excited with their new “digs” and things seemed to get off to a very positive beginning. We wish them well at this historic moment of the start of a new school. We’ve scheduled a Baptism preparation session for next Saturday at 10am in our meeting room at Good Shepherd Church, for those parents who have little ones to be presented for the Sacrament of Baptism. It is also for those who are expecting a new baby in the months ahead, and who should now be preparing for the child’s baptism as close to the date of birth as possible. This is to ensure that there be no unnecessary delay in arranging the celebration. Please call the parish office to register your attendance at this session. Have a good week,

POPE FRANCIS ~ ANGELUS at Saint Peter's Square

06 September 2015 w2.vatican.va

1st Reading: Isaiah 35:4–7 Responsorial: Psalm 146:7–10 2nd Reading: James 2:1-5 Gospel: Mark 7:31–37

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Today's Gospel recounts the healing of a deaf-mute by Jesus, a prodigious event that shows how Jesus re-establishes full communication between man and God and other men. The miracle is set in the area of the Decapolis - that is, in full pagan territory, and therefore, the deaf-mute who is brought to Jesus becomes a symbol of the non-believer who makes a journey towards faith. In fact, his deafness expresses the inability to listen and understand not only to the words of men, but also the Word of God. And St. Paul reminds us that "faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ" (Rom 10:17). The first thing that Jesus does is to take him “off by himself away from the crowd” (v.33); not only does Jesus not want to publicize the gesture he is about to make, he does not want his word to be covered by the noise of rumors and the talk of the environment. The Word of God that Christ transmits to us needs silence to be accepted as a Word that heals, that reconciles and re-establishes communication. Then two gestures of Jesus are highlighted - both gestures personal and intimate. Jesus touches the ears and the tongue of the deaf-mute. To restore the relationship with that man "stuck" in the communication, Jesus first physically re-establishes contact. The miracle is a gift from on high, for Jesus implores the Father: “...looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened!" (v.34). And the ears of the deaf are opened, the knot of his tongue is melted and he begins to speak correctly.

Our God is a God who is infinitely powerful and yet intensely personal! This event shows us that God is not closed in on himself - rather he is open and connects with humanity. In his immense mercy, he overcomes the abyss of the infinite difference between him and us, and he comes to meet us. To make possible this communication with man, God becomes man: it is not enough for him to speak to us through the law and the prophets, but makes himself present in the person of his Son, the Word made flesh. Jesus is the great "builder of bridges", who builds in himself the great bridge of full communion with the Father. But this Gospel also speaks to us about us: often we are folded and closed in on ourselves, and we create so many inaccessible and inhospitable islands. Even the most basic human relationships

sometimes create realities incapable of mutual openness: the closed couple, the closed family, the closed group, the closed parish, the closed homeland ... And this is not God's! This is ours. It is our sin. Yet at the origin of our Christian life, in Baptism, there is precisely that gesture and that word of Jesus: Ephphatha! Be opened! In Baptism, we were healed from the deafness of egoism and from the muteness of closure and sin. We were adopted into the great

family of the Church. We can listen to God who speaks to us. He communicates his Word to those who have never heard it and to those who have forgotten it and buried it under the thorns of the worries and deceptions of the world. Reflecting on today’s Gospel, we are compelled to ask ourselves, what is blocking our spiritual ears to hearing the word of God? What has stiffened our tongues so that we hesitate to respond fully in faith and love? We ask the Blessed Virgin, a woman of listening and joyful witness, to intercede and support us in our commitment to profess our faith and to share through word and deed the wonders of the Lord to those we meet on our journey.

“Your face Lord, do I seek.” Psalm 27:8 When we fix our eyes on Jesus, we will see that His love is always an initiating love that meets us where we are. When we come to Him in adoration, He shows us that He wants to be our Lord, our Saviour, and our friend. May our eyes and hearts be opened to this beautiful invitation. BIBLE STUDY While the historical books of the Bible recount God's creative and redemptive acts in history, the Psalms reveal Israel's response to God's covenant offer and serve as a model for our response to Him. The Psalms come from the deeply personal perspective of one who is seeking God. Our communication with God is enhanced by a deeper understanding of the book of Psalms and of the individual psalms that reside in each of our hearts.
