GRANADA HILLS JULY 4TH PARADE

Everyone is invited to the Granada Hills parade at 4:00 on the4th of July. We will meet on El Dorado (around the 7900 block)

and walk to the park. The Oak Hill Fire Trucks will lead the way with the help of the sheriffs. Please decorate your bike, car, wagon, dog, children, scooter, or whatever and join us for a fun time! Prizes will be awarded for the best decorations.

We will have games for the kids (and young at heart) and refreshments for all at the park after the parade. Around 5:30 we will serve hamburgers and hot dogs and all the fixin's. If you would like to help, please contact Melissa 689-4982

2010-2011 YEAR RoUND SwIm

TEAmWe Want You!

The Circle C Select Swim team is a year round program created to develop each swimmers technique, conditioning, discipline, goal setting,self-esteem and competitiveness while learning the sport of swimming.

The year round season will begin July 19th with a two week stroke clinic followed by daily practices beginning August 2nd. The program has applied to be an AISD Off Campus Physical Education Provider. AISD students in 7th grade or higher may apply for a PE waiver for the 2010-2011 school year. To be eligible for the AISD waiver, a swimmer must have registered for the team, paid all applicable fees, and submitted a completed PE waiver to the swim center by August 16th. July Program: wallace Jefferson, chief Justice of the supreme court of texas

Chief Justice Jefferson was appointed to the Supreme Court of Texas in March 2001, elected in November 2002 and on September 14, 2004, he was appointed Chief Justice. His appointment as Chief Justice was confirmed unanimously by the Texas Senate on March

9, 2005. He was elected Chief Justice in 2006, and reelected to a full term in 2008. His term ends December 31, 2014.

Chief Justice Jefferson joined the court from private practice in San Antonio. As a partner in the appellate specialty firm of Crofts, Callaway & Jefferson, he successfully argued two cases before the United States Supreme Court. He is a graduate of the James Madison College at Michigan State University and the University of Texas School of Law.

He is certified in civil appellate law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He was San Antonio Bar Association President for 1998-99, and was named the San Antonio Young Lawyers Association’s Outstanding Young Lawyer in 1997.

In August, 2008, Chief Justice Jefferson was elected First Vice President of the Conference of Chief Justices, and is scheduled to lead the organization as its President in 2010. The Conference is an association of chief justices from each of the fifty states and the U.S. territories. As President, Chief Justice Jefferson will be Chair of the National Center for State Courts, a policy and resource organization in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Chief Justice Jefferson has a fascinating personal story to share with us including his ascendancy to the top judicial office in Texas and how that branch of government works.

gardening in the hill country Spring is in full swing with bright green mornings full of sunshine

and bird song. Area garden centers are bursting with eager gardeners loading carts with compost, flowers and landscape supplies. While riding the energy of the season to beautify your yard, keep in mind a few things that will help the garden flourish through spring and summer.

Healthy soil supports a healthy landscape. Dedicate energy every year to improving your soil, and you will be richly rewarded with better blooms, improved water efficiency, and fewer disease problems. Work compost into garden and flower beds, and top-dress established areas and lawns with compost. Compost improves soil quality, and reduces or eliminates the need for fertilizer.

Water your garden efficiently and effectively. Although some watering is necessary to sustain gardens in the Hill Country, many people water too much! Over-watering wet or shallow soil results in weakened or diseased plants as well as runoff (water and money down the storm drain). For our thin and clay Hill Country soils, ½ inch, twice per week is the maximum amount you should need to water--even during the heat of summer. During spring and fall, ½ inch once per week is plenty.

Watering between dusk and dawn further increases the effectiveness of the water you use by reducing evaporation and increasing the amount of water that makes it to plant roots.

Twice per week summer watering is good for landscapes and also good for water supply. Over 60 percent of residential water is used on landscapes in the summer, resulting in water treatment plants experiencing peak demands. Efficient watering reduces the need to built new water treatment plants.

The City of Austin requires their customers to water no more than twice per week watering schedule effective May 1 through September 30. LCRA encourages all of its retail customers to follow Austin’s schedule. The watering schedule is as follows:

seton’s cancer Program receives komen grant To Sustain Breast Cancer Outreach

The Seton Family of Hospitals is proud to announce that its cancer program is the recipient of a generous $223,000 grant from the Austin

Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.This is the tenth year the Komen Austin

Affiliate has supported Seton’s breast cancer services for low-income patients. Last year, more than 1,600 women were screened for breast

cancer by the mobile mammography program, with nearly 1,800 screening mammograms planned for 2010-11. More than 240 women with breast problems were helped this past year and up to 300 are expected to receive services in 2010-11.

“The generous grant from the Komen Austin Affiliate enables Seton to continue reaching out to underserved women residing in Travis, Hays, Caldwell, Bastrop and Williamson Counties with vital mobile mammography services and breast diagnostics,” said Dawn Parsons, Clinical Manager, Seton Family of Hospitals Cancer Program.

The Seton Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Outreach Program brings breast health services directly to those most in need. The

Take the Time van transports a mobile mammography X-ray unit and a team of breast cancer screening nurses to neighborhood and community centers, clinics, churches and civic organizations. Traveling to communities throughout Central Texas, the Seton Breast Cancer Screening Team provides low-cost mammograms, clinical breast exams and breast health education to underserved, low-income patients ages 40 years and older.

Services offered through Seton’s Breast Cancer Diagnostic Work-Up Program include diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, surgeon consultations and pathology interpretations. Finding breast cancer at its earliest stage when the disease can be successfully treated, dramatically reduces mortality related to breast cancer. Seton’s program increases access, convenience, continuity of care, eliminate financial barriers and decrease the amount of time it takes to reach a diagnosis, which leads to better outcomes.
