Be a Brand Ambassador!
Tip #1 – Be honest and passionate
Do we all love every aspect of Girl Scouting? Probably not. So when you talk about why you
love Girl Scouts, be sure to focus on why YOU love Girl Scouts. You should be knowledgeable
about the organization as a whole, and be consistent with our mission, but speak directly to your
personal experiences. Your honesty will fuel your passion, and the message will come through
strong!
Tip #2 – Be a good listener
Just like you have a specific reason for loving Girl Scouts, other girls are looking for
organizations to fit their specific needs. Practice intentional listening when you are engaging
with others, to truly understand what they are looking for. By hearing them out, you can best
help them understand why Girl Scouts really is the best organization for every girl!
Tip #3 – Be prepared for the tough questions
Girl Scouts is a well-recognized organization, and with recognition comes rumors,
misinformation, and additional speculation. This means you might be asked some questions that
you may or may not know the answer to. On the back side of this document you’ll find a list of
frequently asked questions with recommended talking points, but this certainly doesn’t cover
everything. Remember, if you don’t know the answer to a question, be honest. Feel free to say,
“That’s a great question – I don’t have the answer for you right now, can I get back to you after I
find out?”
Tip #4 – Be original, and be you!
We want you to represent yourself as a Girl Scout. Using personal stories and experiences to
convey your message will always be much more compelling than sharing something that you
have no personal connection to. When you share posts on social media, put your own spin on
things! Tell a related story about a similar experience you had, or explain why this particular
post was meaningful to you. The more personal, the more powerful it will be.
Frequently asked questions
Is it too late for me to join if I’m already in middle school or high school?
You can join Girl Scouts at any age! We serve girls through 12th grade, and we have incredible
program opportunities for older girls such as travel programs, Astronomy Club, and our Girl
Scout Leadership Institute! Also, our awards are non-cumulative, so you can jump in whenever
you’re ready to go for gold.
Is it expensive to be a Girl Scout?
Girl Scouts is a great value! For the membership year beginning October 1, 2017, membership
starts at just $25, plus additional program fees for some of the activities your girl may want to
participate in. Of course, we don’t want fees to be a barrier, so Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas is
proud to provide financial assistance.
My brother is already in Boy Scouts – wouldn’t it be easier to join that organization instead?
Although Boy Scouts’ goal of inclusivity is commendable, substantial research affirms that girls
need girl-only spaces that offer safe environments and connect them with female role models.
99% of a girl’s life is spent in a co-ed environment. Our programs don’t just introduce girls to
programs or develop a specific set of skills, throughout all that we do we are teaching girls
essential leadership skills that help them tackle the tough issues they will face in society,
including challenging gender stereotypes.
I love the outdoors and high adventure – why shouldn’t I join Boy Scouts instead?
With outdoor leadership journeys that teach girls about the principles of leave no trace and
primitive camping skills, clubs such as Outdoor Adventure Interest Group, and travel programs
like “Wildlife, Geysers & Mountains National Park Adventure” or “Catching Waves in Costa Rica”
there’s no shortage of high adventure here!
Does Girl Scouts have a relationship with Planned Parenthood?
No, Girl Scouts does not have a partnership with Planned Parenthood.
What is Girl Scouts’ position on serving transgender youth?
Girl Scouts is proud to be the premiere leadership organization for girls in the country.
Placement of transgender youth is handled on a case-by-case basis, with the welfare and best
interests of the child and the members of the troop/group in question a top priority. That said, if
the child is recognized by the family and school/community as a girl and lives culturally as a girl,
then Girl Scouts is an organization that can serve her in a setting that is both emotionally and
physically safe.
Does Girl Scouting support families of faith?
Yes. Girl Scouting supports girls from all backgrounds and beliefs. While we are a secular
organization that refrains from teaching religious or spiritual beliefs or practices, we greatly
value our longstanding partnership with religious organizations across many faiths that share
the values of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
