British motoring history will come to life this weekend when Omokoroa man Bruce Harvey

joins 212 other drivers in the Great British Car Rally from Auckland

to Christchurch.

The 1500-km trip, which sees the fun-draising rally pass through Gisborne and Hawkes Bay on the tour south, will have its fi rst stop-over in Tauranga on Sunday with cars meeting at the waterfront car park from 3pm.

The trip, which has been organised the

British Consulate, follows the route of an earlier rally in 1997 and will be the longest rally Bruce has been on in his 1971 MGB GT.

“I use it mainly for just around town, the farthest I’ve gone has been to Hamilton and back, so this will be quite a trip.”

Working in England in the early 70s Bruce Harvey was bit by the MG bug. The Tauranga man laughs as he recalls how a young family and busy life got in the way.

“With three young girls it was never going to be a great family car,” but in a twist, he has turned the car rally into a family adven-ture with his brother Donald and wife Diane, who live in Mackay, joining him.

“We thought it would be a bit of fun. He’s a bit of a motoring fan and is really looking forward to it.”

But the three won’t have to cut down their luggage to squeeze into the classic sports car, with Diane following in Bruce’s every-day Volvo which will have a few spare parts just in case.

“They’re a few parts that Neville (Lucas from the MG Shop) thought I might need.”

After spotting the car for sale three years ago Bruce’s dream of owning an MGB was resurrected, and with the help of Neville the aging body was restored to prime con-dition.

“I had taken it for a spin and the engine

was in good condition. It turned out it had just been restored.”

British cars of all shapes, sizes and vin-tages are taking part in the rally including at least ones Rolls Royce and a Mr Whippy van which will be selling the British-fran-chise’s ice creams along the way.

The rally arrives in Christchurch next Sat-urday (February 23) and is raising money for Save the Children, Starship Foundation, Christchurch City Mission and Stepping Stone Trust.

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby will drive the fi rst leg from Auckland to Tauranga on Sunday.

SPECS

Nothing is more inspiring than experiencing something at the

top of its game. So it was when I stopped in at the Bay

Oval in Mount Maunganui to catch the start of the fi rst day of cricket in Bay of Plenty’s Hawke Cup defence.

It was a meeting between excellence in cricket and superiority in motoring, when Sideline Sid pulled in to the oval on a mission to test-drive a brand new Kia Sorento R LTD 2.2 Diesel AWD, from the Tauranga Motor Company in Cameron Road.

The allure of a rare Hawke Cup game in the Western Bay of Plenty, proved too strong with the old fella deciding to catch some of the opening morning’s play. First presented in 1911 by Lord Hawke the trophy bearing his name is the symbol of minor association cricket superiority in the country.

The friendly briefi ng by Graeme, at the home of the Western Bay Kia dealers, gave me the fi rst impression of a smarter than average SUV. From its early roots as a true off-roader the Sorento has developed into an intel-ligent city cruiser. A genuine seven

seater, with a refreshed body shape, the Kia Sorento R exudes aerodynamic styling and coupled with the fl ash alloy wheels gives a great fi rst glimpse.

Sitting in the drivers seat, Sid was a little overwhelmed by the myriad of features available at the driver’s fi nger-tips. Radio, CD, MP3 player, rear view camera and voice activated bluetooth phone compatibility, were just some of the features to make driv-ing the Sorento something special.

For one who enjoys music while driv-ing, but who has trouble reaching for the various music controls, the steering wheel remote was a winner. The audio system controls on the steering wheel allows you to adjust the volume, skip tracks, switch modes and mute the sound, all while keeping your eyes on the road.

Driving through the city was a breeze, with the 7-inch LCD dashboard information cluster clearly displaying vehicle speed and revs. The information cluster also provides a trip computer, which gives graphics such as distance to empty, average and instant fuel consumption.

Out on the open road the Sorento

had a good turn of pace and was very responsive to lightest touches on the steering wheel. In his pre-drive brief Graeme described it as a particularly nice riding vehicle which women like to drive around town - while it can also double as a off road vehicle for the adventurous men in the family.

After hiding away at the cricket, Bay Driver photographer Tracy fi nally tracked Sideline Sid down at the Bay Oval. It was an easy decision to change the photo shoot to the home of cricket in the Bay of Plenty, with the Hawke Cup play providing a great backdrop.

While the Sorento provides a com-fortable ride for seven passengers, the vehicle we took to the Hawke Cup, would be ideally suited to the rigours of a cricket team tour.

Outstanding diesel economy would please the bean counters who pay the fuel bills and the fi ve comfortable seats (rear two seats folded down) would easily accommodate fi ve burly cricket players, however the real winner was the boot space One of the obstacles in transporting cricket teams are the big players gear bags that hold bats, pads, helmets and a in today’s world, a myriad of protective body armour. Our

Sorento R would easily take fi ve players kits with room to spare for some after match refreshments.

Trying to get the Sorento into the right position for the photo shoot brought another feature of the vehicle into play. The sudden beeping of the (eight) parking sen-sors when we got into a real tight spot, brought another outstanding feature to our attention. Coupled with smart park assist, the days of dinging the Sorento in tight spots are hugely diminished.

Add in a myriad of features

such as adaptive headlights, driver memory functions, rain sensing wipers and a keyless start, make driving the Sorento R a breeze.

In keeping with the excel-lence of the Kia Sorento R, the Bay of Plenty cricket team produced some real brilliance to rival the new Kia vehicle. Behind the eight ball on the fi rst two days play, the Bay side came from behind to stun the Manawatu chal-lengers, grabbing an outright victory to keep the Hawke Cup in the Bay of Plenty to fi ght another day.

Vehicle sales lifted in January, with rises in both new and used vehicles

giving a strong start to the year.

Figures from the Motor Trade Association show total sales reached 17,119 over the month – a lift of 12 per cent compared to January 2011.

The stand-out sector was used imported vehicles, aided by the strong New Zealand dollar and growing availability of good stock with the small sector of used imported com-mercial up 75 per cent to 429 compared to January last year.

Used imported passenger cars of 7,397 were up 1,022 units (16 per cent) compared to 2012, and proved to be their best January month in over a year, with Mazda’s Demio the most popular individual model. Used imported passenger car sales were just ahead of their New Zealand new counterparts for the month (12 units).

MTA spokesman Ian Stronach expects strong competition between brand new and New Zealand new vehicles this year.

“It will be interesting to observe the pro-gress of the used imported market, in light of the recent improvement in the cross-rate of the Kiwi dollar against the Yen.”

“The sales count exceeded ‘arrival’ numbers by a considerable margin in January and more stock will need to arrive if sales volumes are to be maintained at current levels.”

Total new vehicles sales of 9,293 were 612 units (7 per cent) ahead of 2012. Toyota led the new vehicle market with 1,936 sales (1,528 passenger cars and 408 commercials) for a 21 per cent market share.

New passenger vehicle sales of 7,385 were down 114 units (2 per cent) compared to 2012. New commercial sales were strong (up 61 per cent), bouncing back from an artifi cially low January 2012 that was heavily affected by the aftermath of the tsunamis that struck Asia.

On road motorcycle sales remained sub-dued in January, with total sales down four per cent (to 717 units) compared to 2012. Suzuki led the way in new sales with 110 units, followed by Honda with 72 sales and Harley Davidson with 56 sales.

Mount Maunganui rider Cody Cooper is continuing to surprise the motocross world as a serious challenger for the national MX1 crown, with a great round at the fi rst round near Timaru last weekend.

Cooper, who held the MX1 crown in 2011, stunned the southern crowds, hounding defending MX1 class champion Ben Townley all the way to the chequered fl ag in the day’s opening race. It was the fi rst in a hat-trick of top three fi nishes on his RM-Z450.

Cooper fi nished the Timaru contest, the fi rst in the four-round series, with a solid nine-point lead over a big-bike class full of international talent, sending a warning to other riders he will be a huge threat for the title this season.

His success continued in the second race which he won, leaving visiting Scotsman Billy MacKenzie and Australian duo Kirk Gibbs and Todd Waters lost in his wake after Townley crashed out of the race. Cooper settled for a safe third place in the last race, fi nishing behind Waters and MacKenzie.

Cooper will be hoping to apply some more heat of his own when the champion-ship heads to round two at Patetonga, in the Thames Valley, on February 24, saying he is detemined to continue his consistent form to

help him win the title back.“I am very happy with the bike. I wanted

to leave Timaru with a points lead and I achieved that. This is traditionally a bad track for me, so it is great to leave with a points lead and my body still in one piece.”

Moto City Suzuki team manager Andrew Hardisty said Cooper’s result on Sunday was “vindication and apt reward for a lot of hard work being put in by him and by the team around him”.

Hardisty said the team was taking nothing for granted, but said the performance gave them a strong platform to build on.

Cooper’s team-mate, fellow Mount Maun-ganui rider Rhys Carter, had a mixed day in the MX2 (250cc) class but remains well-positioned to fi nish the championship on the podium again. Carter took his RM-Z250 to fi nish 4-10-3 in his three races, uncharacter-istically crashing twice in race two and both times impressively fi ghting back through the talent-packed fi eld.

“I felt confi dent today but I think I rode over my head in race two and the crashes cost me dearly. At least I have solid points on the board and I achieved that at an unforgiving track. I think I can move for-ward from here.”

Cooper stuns with wins

Motorsport runs strong in Glenn Pelham’s family with motor oil thick

in their veins.

Growing up in Auckland, the Mount Maunganui signwriter got his taste for all things automotive by his father Bruce’s side.

Following his mechanic father into kart-ing as a 15-year-old, Glenn clearly recalls helping his father work on his fi rst car – a “souped up 1976 Mini 1000”.

“It had big hot exhausts on it and mag wheels. My father helped me build it up, and he did one for my brother and my sister as well.”

Glenn credits the Mini as helping teach him good driving fundamentals. Asked for any stories about his early exploits in the Mini he goes quiet, mumbling about not wanting to get himself in trouble.

From the Mini he progressed up to a series of Japanese cars with turbos, but now it is all about the BMW E30. Glenn still works side by side with his dad, a retired mechanic, who he works with on the cars he has raced in the Castrol BMW Race Series since 2008.

“I built a car in 2008 and ran that for two—three years, then due to business commitments I decided I would have half a season off. Then I decided to build another car, it didn’t last too long” he says. admit-ting he started to miss the racing.

“My father and I bought a road-going BMW and we stripped the whole thing out … It was basically a ground up rebuild.”

While it takes a lot of time Glenn says “the passion outweighs the time”.

“I love working on the car and racing it so I get satisfaction from the start to the fi nish of it.”

Midway through the series he is placed 10th out of 68 and is determined to fi nish within the top 10. Over the years he has had a couple of race fi rsts, but so far this season the best he has managed has been seconds and thirds, saying he’s still “chasing that elusive fi rst place this season”.

His brother Todd also races in the series, but in an open class category for modifi ed cars rather than the unmodifi ed class Glenn races in. Todd won the Open B series last year but is not doing so well this year in the Open A class.

Next year Glenn will be racing in the Open C class with major plans to modify a car with his dad.

“For us racing is a family affair. It’s what we do. No doubt when I have children it will be their hobby as well.” The next series race will be in Taupo on March 9-10.

Paeroa will be bursting at the seams this weekend with 15,000 people expected

to enjoy the annual Paeroa Battle of the Streets race on Sunday.

Positive Paeroa town promoter Jo Tilsley says the event is shaping up to be the best eve in the event’s 22-year history with about 150 riders racing on the city circuit which is expected to see the fasted riders reach speeds of 280 km/h. Competitors include two Australian riders and 1985 British champion Barry Smith.

“It’s a really exhilarating experience being able to get up close as you can to the riders racing down the main street.”

Jo encouraged visitor from the Western Bay to arrive early (gates open at 6am, with practice from 8.15am and races 11.15am). Parking will be avail-able in the soccer fi eld over the Ohinemuri River (traffi c from the Western Bay turn left into Te Aroha Rd from State Highway 2 then over the bridge).

Barely three months after opening Stadium Cars Tauranga has already expanded with a new yard focussed

on lower priced vehicles.

Managing director Carin Arundel decided to open the new lot after many enquiries for cars under $13,000 since opening the used car spe-cialist at the former Vern Jacobsen Hyundai dealership on Cameron Rd in October.

Located just along Cameron Rd from the main yard – separated just by the Cane and Pot Warehouse – the new yard offers cars in the $7990 to $12990 price range. As a special opening promotion most of the cars have been slashed in price – with 20 cars marked down to $7990 until Sunday 4pm.

“It’s great to make a bit of a splash. The yard is going really well but we thought it would still be good to have a big promotion to cel-ebrate the second yard.”

Carin, who owns the business jointly with Stadium Cars head office in Christchurch, believes the company’s focus on only offering top quality cars at a sharp price is the secret of his success.

“It’s been fantastic – it’s growing beyond our expectations. I think the presentation of the

vehicles and the great pricing is really hitting the mark.”

He personally selects and purchases all of his vehicles, only buying ‘the highest quality, non-smoking and usually one owner’ cars. All vehicles go through a thorough check and servicing before getting on the yard – includ-ing an AA appraisal and full service.

The yard’s reputation has already spread far and wide, with Carin saying he is sending cars all around the country – with many cars going to Auckland and Hamilton buyers. Carin says Auckland buyers love the great quality they can get at Stadium’s lower prices.

There are few things Carin and his team love more than seeing happy customers drive away with a great deal, something he says the Stadium finance package is making even easier. Cars can be purchased with no deposit and payments from as little as $56 per week ($7990 models).

Taken as a whole, Stadium’s three full-time salespeople – Carin, Tim Forsyth and Shaun Vidler – have a wealth of experience with a total of 50 years working on the showroom floor. Carin says they are all committed to offering the best possible customer service along with follow-up after-sales support.
