outstandIng student actIvItIesFrom conferences and student clubs to inter-university competitions, the Desautels Bachelor of Commerce program offers students a wealth of extra-curricular activities from which to choose. The award-winning Management Undergraduate Society (MUS) provides student representation on all major committees relating to services and academic policies within the university and Faculty – The Desautels Faculty of Management is one of the few business schools that provides students such a direct voice in shaping their degree.

The MUS provides students with an array of events and services steeped in the management traditions of philanthropy, fun, student orientation and, of course, academic excellence. MUS activities include social events such as Management Frosh Week and the Management Winter Carnival, philanthropic events such as an annual AIDS benefit fashion show, a Cancer Auction and the Commerce and Administration Student Charity Organization to support the Montreal Children’s Hospital, and academic events such as the Marketing Network Luncheon, Jeux de Commerce/Commerce Games and the McGill Business Conference on Sustainability.

Students have more than proven themselves through their highly successful performance in a variety of local and international case competitions, contributing to the ongoing achievements of the Desautels Faculty of Management. It is the reflection of such accomplishments and its student-focus that the MUS is consistently awarded the Student Society of the Year award from the Student Society of McGill University.

Desautels’ Career Services is dedicated to helping students develop career management skills and explore career paths that enable them to achieve their career goals. As of their first year, students are encouraged to partner with their individually assigned Career Advisor to fine-tune their professional skills through one-on-one counseling and guidance, résumé and cover letter review, career fairs, interview preps, mock interviews, as well as through career strategy workshops.

Networking and connecting with employers and alumni are key to our students’ career development strategy. Career Services hosts many employers and alumni on campus through workshops and events, and organizes recruiting trips (New York and Toronto), leading to successful recruitment.

By fully tapping into the tools and personalized resources Career Services has to offer, students are apt to identity their areas of interest, understand the hiring process and effectively target their career of choice.

reMarkaBle cItyMontreal’s unparalleled joie-de-vivre is a reflection of its bilingual cosmopolitan culture. Outside the classroom, walk along the city’s historic cobblestone streets lined with one-of-a-kind boutiques and galleries, dine at a myriad of intimate cafés and restaurants, and partake in a thriving nightlife.

Consistently rated by The Princeton Review as one of North America’s best “college towns”, it is easy to understand why Montreal, with its population of 3.6 million, has the highest number of students per capita of all major North American cities. Montreal is an affordable and “green” oasis for out-of-town students, with safe, trendy and bike-friendly neighborhoods surrounding McGill’s leafy downtown campus. These enticing districts become the nexus of action for the city’s numerous festivals and sporting events, which draw millions of visitors annually. Escape the action in the numerous parks and gardens that are inter-connected by pedestrian lanes and bike paths, offering residents and visitors old-world charm and tranquility.

As a major technological and transportation hub, Montreal makes it easy for Desautels students to remain connected to the rest of the world. The city is less than 90-minutes by plane from Toronto, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, and day-trips to Ottawa and historic Quebec City are also popular.

InterdIscIplInary, FlexIBle currIculuMThe learning experience is unique in its combination of a solid disciplinary foundation with great flexibility, allowing students to design and personalize their education without compromising the fundamentals of rigorous management training. Students have the option to develop highly specialized skills and build their technical capability (e.g. a Finance Major with a Minor in Math/Stats) or pursue a more liberal, well-rounded education.

general ManagementStudents in General Management acquire a solid business foundation by completing a minimum of two Concentrations, or combining one Concentration with a Minor from another faculty. Choosing this option allows them to diversify their business background and explore non-management programs or electives.

Majors and HonoursStudents focus their studies in one of the following areas listed below in order to gain maximum exposure in their preferred field. These programs are natural choices for students who have clearly defined career objectives, or who are interested in obtaining further professional training, such as a CA designation or application to graduate school. A Major or Honours can be combined with a Concentration or a Minor.

InnovatIve, unIque prograMsOur unique Major in International Management, is an interdisciplinary program that is intended for those who want to combine business studies with global studies, foreign language proficiency and experiential learning through international exchanges or internships. Students in this multifaceted program develop a global awareness along with strong practical and theoretical business skills for which the Desautels Faculty of Management is renowned. Students can choose from a wide variety of regional or topical courses offered in three themes: comparative global studies; global politics and economy; and global well-being and development. In addition, students will acquire advanced language skills essential for practicing business in an increasingly borderless global economy.

The one-of-a-kind Desautels Honours in Investment Management program, integrates investment management teaching, research and practice to create a unique value exchange between leading industry experts, world-class finance professors and our outstanding students. Throughout the program, students learn to invest money through Desautels Capital Management, an investment firm created to give students real-life experience in investment management. This program provides graduates with a competitive edge by offering hands-on education in financial analysis, portfolio management, corporate finance, global investments, risk management and hedge-fund investing, and can lead directly to CFA, CAIA, FRM and PRM accreditations.
