YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION TO LAUNCH A SUCCESSFUL CAREER. WELL, YOU’VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE.

BCIT Works

Wherever you are, a BCIT grad is making an impact. Whether it’s building our cities, shaping our economy, keeping you healthy, or innovating technology, a BCIT grad is making it happen. With more than 140,000 grads contributing to the economic, social, and environmental prosperity of BC, BCIT grads are in demand and making a difference.

If you’re looking for employable skills that will get you hired, then look no further. The proof is right in front of you. Look around.

Eight out of ten BCIT diploma and certificate grads are working in their field of study.* You’re more likely to have the career you want simply by choosing BCIT.

HERE’S WHY BCIT WORKS:Small class sizes

You can expect that your instructor will know you by name and there will be plenty of time to get one-on-one help with your course work. You’ll also start your program and graduate with the same classmates, forging relationships that will last throughout your career. Plus you’ll have more opportunity to get your hands on the latest equipment!

Did you know? 75% of classrooms across all BCIT campuses have a capacity of 30 seats or less.

Learn by doing

The best way to learn something is by actually doing it. Yes, you will have lectures and textbooks, but most of your time will be spent directly applying what you’ve learned in a lab, shop, classroom, or practicum. Applied learning ensures that you can go into the first day of your career with confidence.

For example, Games Development students take their turn at designing the next big game title. See them in action on youtube.com/bcit, search ‘games development’.

Industry connections

BCIT programs are developed in consultation with leading employers. More than 1,800 industry professionals sit on advisory committees that provide direct input to curriculum development to ensure that you’ll be at the forefront of the latest developments in your industry. BCIT instructors are active in their careers and bring years of practical expertise. They bring an insider’s perspective of their industry–knowledge and experience that will benefit you in the classroom and after you graduate.

Marketing Communications students host the annual Schmoozaplooza networking event to mingle with potential sponsors for their spring industry internships. Get a glimpse behind the scenes–visit bcit.ca/update, search ‘schmoozapalooza’.

Financial Aid and Awards –Entrance AwardsPost-secondary education is a big investment in your future–it’s your ticket to a successful career.

It’s also a time in your life that requires you to make a personal investment of your time and money. For many, it’s something they can’t do without additional resources and financial support.

BCIT Student Financial Aid and Awards provides services to help you figure out how to make going to school financially possible. Besides providing advice, we can direct you to several funding opportunities once you’re a student, including awards and bursaries (see page 81 for details). Many don’t realize that there are also entrance awards for which you can apply before you begin your first day of study.

Entrance awards are available for technology and trades students registered in a full-time program. Entrance awards can make a substantial difference in lessening your financial commitment. For instance, the BCIT President’s Entrance Awards provide up to 25 students with $4,000 towards one year’s tuition.

Here’s just a sampling of entrance awards available:*

> BCIT Alumni Association Entrance Awards–up to five awards towards one year’s tuition (maximum $3,000)

> BCIT Board of Governors Entrance Awards for Baccalaureate Degrees–up to six awards towards two consecutive terms’ tuition (maximum $4,500 total)

> HSBC Aerospace Entrance Awards–two $3,500 awards

> PCL Centennial Construction Industry Training Entrance Awards–three $2,000 awards.

Visit bcit.ca/finaid for a listing of all entrance awards, specific application requirements, and deadlines.

DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS HELP STUDENTS FOCUS ON EXCELLENCEJessica Wilson wanted a more creative and challenging career, so she chose the Automation and Instrumentation option of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology program.

Jessica took full advantage of student life at BCIT. She volunteered as a student representative, worked part-time as a peer tutor, and was elected BCIT’s acting president for the International Society of Automation.

When she found herself unable to cover her school expenses, she applied for and received student bursary support. On graduation, Jessica’s hard work and achievements were recognized in the form of three graduate awards totalling $1,808. “I was very honoured and surprised to receive so much support from BCIT donors–thank you!” says Jessica.

Jessica now works at ESC Automation in Surrey, where she designs and commissions building automation systems for commercial buildings.

English training

To be accepted into a BCIT program, international students are required to reach a specified level of English proficiency. Review the English requirements for your program and if you find that you don’t meet the criteria, we have some options for you internally at BCIT.

Option 1–International Student Entry Program (ISEP)

ISEP provides English instruction in all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

ISEP is designed for: > International students who are unable to meet the BCIT English entrance requirements in their program of choice.

> Students who require English-language upgrading in all four language skill areas.

ISEP is structured to: > Provide 25 hours per week of language instruction to students.

> Satisfy international student visa requirements by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Learn more about ISEP at bcit.ca/0005nobcit.

Option 2–Professional English Language Development (PELD)

PELD provides English instruction focused in two key language skills: reading and writing.

Courses are designed for: > Landed immigrants who are unable to meet the BCIT English entrance requirements in their program of choice.

> International students who have completed their high school education in an English-speaking country but require English-language upgrading with a focus on writing.

PELD is structured to allow students to choose part-time classes to fit their scheduling needs.

Learn more about PELD at bcit.ca/cas/communication/peld.

Q&AWhy did you choose a career in energy management? Andrea: In my early career, I did not really understand that energy management was part of the solution. I decided to make a career change because I believed that there was a better chance of making a difference starting today through energy reduction. BCIT offered a program on energy management and I was blown away by the practical nature of the training. It was not theory; it was real people doing real work, with industry professionals teaching the up-and-coming energy managers.

How is BCIT doing its part in meeting the emerging human resource needs of the energy management sector?Alex: The SEMAC program is a result of collaboration between BC Hydro and BCIT. It’s industry-driven, completely relevant, and ensures grads are job-ready for the new green economy. Students usually complete all the required courses within one year, attending courses delivered in the evenings and on weekends. In a world that moves as fast as ours, a short and intense return to school is, in my opinion, the best way to be successful in evolving your career.

RICHARD TAYLORDIRECTOR OF BUSINESS OPERATIONS, CAMS SOFTWARE CORPORATIONCOMPUTER SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY, ’96 Q&A

Why did you choose the BCIT computing program to launch your IT career?Brian: BCIT was recommended to me by a friend of mine in the IT industry. I had already been out of high school for 10 years, so being able to earn an income within two years at BCIT vs. four+ years at a university was a big factor for me.

How do you feel BCIT training has helped you prepare to launch your own business?Richard: BCIT provides specific hands-on knowledge for computing professionals, allowing graduates to enter multiple fields within the industry: programming, testing, documentation, analysis, design, support, even project management. The skills I developed at BCIT went far beyond just writing code or creating websites. I learned how to manage complex IT projects, and work with development teams as well as large companies. The BCIT CST program laid the foundations of knowledge I needed to be successful in every role I’ve subsequently filled in my IT career.

Q&AWhy did you choose this field? My dad was an engineer, so I already knew how this industry would be interesting and challenging for me. I was pretty good at math and wanted to make a choice that would ensure I had employment options well into the future, so I decided an engineering field such as architecture was the way to go.

As a BCIT grad, what advantages did you feel you had when it came to looking for your first full-time job?I had an extraordinary experience getting my first job. I had done my workplace practicum with Ledcor and they called me the day after my last final exam to arrange an interview. I was just finishing classes and hadn’t even thought about where I wanted to work yet and I was hired before I even started to look!

REQUIREMENTSEnsure your enrolment goes as smoothly as possible—check that you meet BCIT’s entrance requirements or course prerequisites. Our requirements vary depending on the type of program or course you’ve chosen:

Full-time programs bcit.ca/admission/apply/fulltime

Part-time program approval bcit.ca/admission/apply/parttime

Part-time course registration bcit.ca/admission/register

Apprenticeship training bcit.ca/admission/apply/apprenticeship

When you apply, you will be required to submit proof that you have completed the entrance requirements as identified by the program to which you are applying. You will be contacted by the Admissions department regarding any outstanding requirements. This applies to all applicants whether you have been educated inside or outside Canada. Applicants lacking specific entrance requirement courses or required grades will be notified by Admissions. It is your responsibility to upgrade to meet the required standards for the program to which you are applying. Program advisors can assist you with admission planning and provide information on upgrading options.

International students should check with the International Student Centre (ISC) regarding admission requirement equivalencies. If necessary, your credentials from outside Canada can be evaluated through the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES). Find out more at bcit.ca/ices.

Application and AdmissionTo help you achieve success, BCIT establishes admission guidelines. Most programs require specific grade 11 and grade 12 courses. High school graduation is also a requirement for some programs. A number of programs also have non-academic requirements such as attending an information session, submitting a resumé, or participating in an interview. See pages 16–71 of this book for specific admission requirements for your program, or find them at bcit.ca/study/programs.

Page 73: BCIT Viewbook 2012/13

Acceptable alternatives to a high school diploma

General Educational Development (GED) or British Columbia Adult Graduation Diploma (BCAGD)

High school graduation is a preferred requirement for admission to most programs and BCIT strongly recommends high school graduation for career success. Applicants who do not possess high school graduation will be considered for admission if they meet or exceed program entrance requirements.

Note: High school graduation is a mandatory requirement for Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

Applicants can use BCIT’s online Transfer Guide (bcit.ca/admission/transfer), to look up courses, or may contact Program Advising to determine whether a completed course will be an acceptable equivalent.

Out-of-province or out-of-country courses

If you need to have courses assessed for entrance requirement fulfillment, submit an official copy of your educational transcripts as early as possible. Transcripts that are not in English must be officially translated. Graduation from an out-of-country secondary school may meet the high school graduation requirement with the equivalent of 12 years of study. Your individual courses will need to be assessed to determine equivalent grade level.

Program Advising

If you have questions after reviewing the entrance requirements for your chosen program, Program Advising is here to help.

Please note that BCIT Program Advisors are not career counsellors, nor do they evaluate educational documents for admission, transfer credit, or credential equivalencies.

Upgrading

If you don’t meet the specified entrance requirements for the program to which you’re applying, BCIT provides options for upgrading (bcit.ca/admission/upgrading). Some programs will still consider your application while you’re in the process of upgrading. Find out what to submit with your application (bcit.ca/admission/documents) if you are currently upgrading. Some programs have specific deadline dates (bcit.ca/admission/whentoapply) for all entrance requirements to be met. Check the entrance requirements for your program to see if a deadline has been set.

HOW APPLICATIONS ARE PROCESSEDAll applications are considered promptly and equitably. Please note, you can only be considered for one program at a time.

Continual intake and specific intake

Once a continual intake program is full, complete applications are put on a wait-list on a first-come, first-served basis for the next available seat. Applicants who have met the program entrance requirements will be placed on the wait-list.

Specific intake refers to each time a program takes in new students. Once a specific intake program is full, the remaining applications are not carried forward to the next intake. Individuals who still want to take the program must re-apply for the next start date. If there are more applicants than seats available, BCIT will select those applicants it deems to have the best opportunity for success. This means that meeting the prerequisites does not guarantee you a seat in the program.

Priority of student selection

First priority: BC residents who are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants (BC residents with permanent resident status at time of application) who have lived in BC for the immediate 12 months prior to the program start.

Second priority: Canadian citizens and those applicants with permanent resident status who live out of province.

Third priority: Applicants without Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant (permanent resident) status.

SUBMITTING TRANSCRIPTS AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTSTranscripts and supporting documents must be submitted to show you meet the requirements identified by your chosen program. If you apply online, submit your transcripts and supporting documents by mail, fax, or in person. If you apply by mail, fax, or in person, ensure your transcripts and supporting documents accompany your application form. Ensure your full name and BCIT ID (student number) is included on each document submitted.

Transcripts

If you are applying to a diploma of technology or trade program, you may submit photocopies of your transcripts. However, BCIT reserves the right to request official documents at any time. If you are applying for advanced placement or to a degree program, you must submit official transcripts. For more information, visit bcit.ca/admission/documents.

If you are still in secondary school: Submit your statement of marks for grade 11 subjects, your statement of marks from first-semester grade 12 subjects (issued by your school), your statement showing courses currently attending, and all available interim grades (issued by your school).

If you have graduated from secondary school: Submit your final official transcripts showing courses taken, marks received, and successful secondary school graduation.

If you have taken post-secondary courses: Submit all official secondary and post-secondary transcripts. If you intend to apply for transfer credit for any courses within your program, only official transcripts will be accepted; photocopies are not valid.

If you are currently upgrading: If you are attending or planning to attend courses that are entrance requirements for your chosen program, you must include proof of registration with your application. Keep the Admissions Office informed of your progress by sending interim transcripts or an official note from your instructor. Upon completing the courses, arrange to have your official transcripts sent to the Admissions Office.

If you are an international applicant: If your education was completed in another country, submit secondary and post-secondary transcripts from the schools you attended. Official English translations must accompany documents that are in another language. Costs of translations into English are your responsibility.

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTSMany programs require additional information such as a resumé, letter of intent, or a copy of your driver’s licence. Check your program page to see if your program has additional requirements.

If you are not a Canadian citizen:

When applying in person, bring official government documents indicating permanent resident status or a study permit. BCIT will copy original documents. If you are applying from outside the Lower Mainland, submit a copy of your documents to the Admissions Office (do not submit original documents).

Where transcripts and other official documentation are not in English, the original documents must be accompanied by English translations and notarized at your expense.

BCIT ENGLISH-LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTSTo be successful in BCIT’s applied learning environment, applicants must demonstrate a suitable level of English in all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The English-language proficiency requirement is program-specific. Please refer to the entrance requirements for your program of interest.

For detailed information on equivalencies and upgrading options refer to: bcit.ca/admission/upgrading/englishproficiency.

To meet the English-language proficiency requirement, applicants are assessed as either Category A or Category B.

Category A applicants

Category A applicants are individuals who have studied in a country for two years where English is the primary language. Most domestic applicants will be Category A applicants.

Category A applicants who have met the equivalent English 11/12 requirement for their program will be considered to have met the reading, writing, speaking, and listening English requirements.

Applicants who do not meet their program’s English reading and writing (eg. English 11/12) requirements are to refer to BCIT’s English 11/12 Equivalencies and Upgrading Options at bcit.ca/admission/upgrading/english.

Category B applicants

Category B Applicants are individuals whose previous education is not from a country where English is the primary language or who have not completed two years of education in English in non-ESL/EAL courses.

Category B applicants who have met the equivalent English 11/12 requirement for their program will be considered to have met the reading and writing English requirements but will still need to prove listening and speaking skills.

For information on how to meet all four required English language skills, please review BCIT’s Category B English Equivalencies and Upgrading Options at bcit.ca/admission/upgrading/categoryb.

TRANSFER CREDITFind out if the credit from a course you’ve completed at another academic institution is transferable to BCIT. Visit bcit.ca/admission/transfer and search for a course using our online database.

Depending on your program of study, BCIT has several options for assessing and granting transfer credit:

Individual course credit

If you do not see a desired BCIT equivalency in our online Transfer Equivalency Database, you can still apply for credit as new equivalencies are continually approved. Be sure to include a detailed course outline or syllabus and official transcript with your application.

You can also apply for course credit after you have been accepted into your chosen program. If credit is granted, your program tuition likely will not change, but your course load will be lighter. This could be an advantage, but if you are applying for financial aid, you may not be eligible for certain kinds of assistance unless you carry a minimum course load.

Visit bcit.ca/admission/transfer for forms and additional information.

Advanced placement

If you have completed a degree, a diploma, or a substantial amount of course work in a specific program, you may qualify for advanced placement into a full-time program. If approved, you would be awarded credit for a portion of a program. Visit bcit.ca/admission/advanced.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition

Did you also know the knowledge and skills that you have acquired outside of a recognized program—through volunteer work, your hobbies, on-the-job experience, or independent study—may qualify for credits at BCIT and exempt you from particular courses in your chosen program? Visit bcit.ca/admission/transfer/plar.

International ApplicantsIf your education was completed in another country, submit official high school and post-secondary transcripts from the schools you attended. Official English translations must accompany documents that are in another language. Costs for translation into English are the responsibility of the applicant.

Please note that the deadline for applications from international students is four weeks earlier than stated for each program. For example, we recommend that students apply from October 1–February 28 for programs that start the following September. The absolute application deadline for September starts is May 1, but the earlier you apply the better your chances of gaining a seat. This deadline is also in place to allow you additional time to apply for your study permit from the Canadian Embassy, Consulate, or High Commission in your area.

Medical insurance

British Columbia law states that all residents must have medical insurance while living and studying here. It is also mandatory while studying at BCIT. International students must provide the International Student Centre with a copy of their medical insurance documents. Students who do not have medical insurance can purchase excellent insurance through Student Guard, a private medical insurance company. The cost of this coverage is $750 per year. This works out to $2 per day.

Study permit

Most foreign students will need a study permit to study in Canada; however, there are a few exceptions, including:

If you wish to study in a short-term course or program You do not need a study permit if you are planning to take a course or program in Canada with a duration of six months or less. You must complete the course or program within the period authorized for your stay in Canada. If you are a visitor who has taken a few BCIT courses and decide to continue your studies, you will be required to apply for a study permit from outside Canada. You will need to either go to the United States to apply or go back to your home country to apply.

If you are a minor child already in Canada You do not need a study permit if you are a minor child, under the age of 19, already in Canada, and your parents are not ‘visitors’ in Canada. For details, visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website at www.cic.gc.ca.

Foreign representatives to Canada (Diplomat Status) Family or staff members of a foreign representative to Canada under the age of 25 accredited by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, do not need a study permit to study. Certain conditions apply. Contact the BCIT International Student Centre at +1.604.432.8616 for details.

For international students who are outside of Canada Once you have been accepted into a program at BCIT, take your letter of acceptance, along with your passport, additional passport photos as required, and the appropriate fee to the Canadian Embassy nearest your home. Apply for your study permit at the embassy. Please note that the entire process may take between three weeks and six months, depending on whether you require a medical examination, and on the workload of the embassy.

Extending your study permit

Once you have been accepted into a program at BCIT you will be required to submit your valid study permit to the International Student Centre. Please contact the International Student Centre at +1.604.432.8816 to request a Letter of Verification form to extend your study permit. Application packages are available at www.cic.gc.ca.

Information for permanent residents

A study permit is not required. Students must provide a copy of their official Permanent Resident documents to the International Student Centre.

Who needs a Temporary Resident Visa?

A Temporary Resident Visa is an official document issued by a Canadian visa office in your home country. It is placed in your passport to show that you have met the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident.

Please visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website at www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp to determine whether or not you need a Temporary Resident Visa to enter Canada.

How do I apply for a Temporary Resident Visa?

If you need a Temporary Resident Visa in addition to your study permit, you can apply for both documents at the same time.

Costs to Attend BCITExact costs will vary, but all students have to pay program fees, buy books and supplies, and cover their living and transportation costs.

Program fees

Program fees include the tuition expenses for your program and the mandatory service fees. Your cost for your chosen program will depend on:

> Whether you enrol in Full-time Studies, degree studies, Part-time Studies, or apprenticeship training

> The length of your program

> Whether you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada or an international student.

Program fees,* including U-Pass, student activity, and student health plan fees, are estimated as follows:

Average cost per year of a two-year diploma program .....................................$5,860

Average cost of a three- to six-month certificate program ................................$3,370

Average cost of a seven- to 12-month certificate program ................................$5,470

Average cost of apprenticeship training (cost based on six weeks of training) .........................$810

Average cost per year of a full-time degree program .....................................$6,570* Program fees are subject to change. To access the most up to date fee schedules and information, visit bcit.ca/admission/fees.

International students pay, on average, two to three times more than the listed domestic program fee. Please see bcit.ca/admission/fees/international for details. To convert from Canadian dollars (CDN) into your currency, please visit oanda.com.

Books and supplies

The cost of books and supplies varies from program to program. Some programs require that students purchase uniforms or equipment. BCIT includes a cost estimate of books and supplies in the detailed full-time program description. For the most recent information, find your program online at bcit.ca/study, then scroll down to ‘books and supplies’.

Computer needs

BCIT provides computer labs for student use on the five main campuses. However, the labs are often busy and many students choose to purchase, lease, or arrange access to an off-campus computer.

Living expenses

Besides educational costs, you will have to cover your living costs while you attend BCIT. This includes accommodation; utilities (telephone, heat and light, ISP, cable); food and house-hold supplies; transportation; laundry; clothing; and leisure activities. The BCIT Student Housing website, bcit.ca/housing, contains valuable information about costs and on- and off-campus accommodation.

Paying for your educationAre you concerned about finances? Be proactive. Student Financial Aid and Awards can help you discover sources of funding, apply for financial aid and awards, avoid and solve problems with student loans, and more. If your situation is complex, you are welcome to book an appointment with a Financial Aid advisor. See bcit.ca/finaid or call 604.432.8555 for more information.

Need-based financial assistance and resources available through BCIT

> BCIT Tuition Fee Deferral

> BCIT Emergency Funding programs

> BCIT Bursaries for full-time students. Students may apply following successful completion of a term/level of study in their program

> Government student loan and grant programs for full-time students

> Government grant and student loan programs for part-time students

> Government student loan debt repayment information

> Student budget planning information and resources.

Other financial assistance sources

External sources of educational funds include scholarships, bursaries, awards, and loans that are not administered by or through BCIT. Eligibility criteria and application procedures vary; in some cases, students from multiple institutions compete for an award and in others, students must have a connection or affiliation to the organization. You are responsible for researching, inquiring, and applying to the organization as indicated in the award description. Start your research at bcit.ca/finaid/externalawards, studentawards.com, and scholarshipscanada.com.

Students who approach parents, relatives, and friends for financial assistance often find that they may be able to help, even if it is in the form of a loan. Others apply to their bank or credit union for a personal student loan or student line of credit.

Information for international students

International students are not eligible for BCIT Entrance Awards, Bursaries, or Emergency Funding programs administered by the Student Financial Aid and Awards office.

International students are encouraged to contact their own government educational offices for information regarding awards and financial assistance available to students studying abroad.
