Trail Development Plan

2nd Quarter 2009

Page 2: BCC Trail Development Plan - 2nd Quarter 2009

IntroductionThis document must be used with reference to BCC Trail Development Plan.

This plan will cover the full area shown in Figure 1, which has been broken into the following areas;

The Allotment (The area within the blue boundary)The Extended Area (The area within the green boundary, to be further defined ASAP)

The Allotment has itself been further broken down into sections based upon the lay of the land (SeeFigure 2).

Each can be described as follows;

B1 - Bowl 1; Moderate/steep slope, defined gully, natural undulations, moderate/densetree coverage, some bushes, forest track access.

B2 - Bowl 2; Steep slope, moderate to dense tree coverage, good drainage, some bushes, forest track access.

B3 - Bowl 3; Steep/moderate/gentle slope, moderate tree coverage, good drainage, some bushes, forest track access.

P - Plateau; Almost flat, sparse tree coverage, many bushes, good drainage, forest trackaccess.

M - Marsh; Moderate/gentle slope, moderate tree coverage, derelict building, stream, dense ground life (scarlet elf cups), many bushes, poor drainage, foresttrack access.

Bk - Bank; Gentle slope, moderate tree coverage, some bushes, good drainage, foresttrack access.

Areas not subject to ‘planned activity’ or ‘further planning’ will be excluded from each planappropriately.

General course maintenance (raking, clearing and remarking) are assumed to be necessary on allcourses at all times. The frequency of each should be based upon use and ground conditions.

Progress is estimated based upon over 12 months of BCC trail building activities, using an average ofDig Day attendance to date.

The next trail plan, '3rd Quarter 2009' will be published before the 9th of October 2009.

Short Term – 3 months

The Allotment

Area B1

This area has had the most use from mountain bikers over the past 10 years. It is the most developedarea with three existing, open trails and evidence of many wild trails and borrow pits.

This area will be the focus of all trail building activity over the short term.

General Area

Planned activity:

• Collect and pile wood and rocks for use during trail building, and to tidy the area.

• Identify the best location for the seating area.

• Erect notice board at seating area.

• Dismantle pre-existing (and unused) trail features to create new trail features andreturn currently unused areas to nature.

• Fill pre-existing borrow pits to make them safe.

• Build safe push up routes for each course (existing routes will be blocked so theycannot be used.)

• Clear rideable route across to the top of Spoons and BBMS from the top fire road.

Further Planning:

• Club hut & tool store initial discussions / plans.

Existing Trails

Trail Name: 143Trail Type: DH / freerideTrail Grade: Red (but accessible to Orange)Trail Summary: Undulating, intermediate & advanced jumps and drops, bermed corners,

fast, smooth.

Planned Activity:

• Improve drainage throughout the gully.

• Slight re-route of the course through the two berms on the plateau to improve the flow. Treating the main line and 'Thread the Needle' separately rather than compromising each.

• Build rollable double as the next feature (after the current tabletop). This will route the trail straight towards 'M', (parallel to the fire road that currently forms the base of all trails) this will allow for a bottom section to be built for 'Spoons' and 'BBMS'.

• Shape the bank after the new drop off (at the top of the course), so that itconnects back onto the 'Wall Ride'.

• Repair and improve the 'chicken run' that misses “Mini Step’” (the drop before “Flip Flop”) to make riding 'Flip Flop' less challenging.

Further Planning:

• None

Trail Name: BBMSTrail Type: DHTrail Grade: Red / BlackTrail Summary: Very tight, technical, advanced roots, not v steep, fast, off camber,

intermediate rocks, small but advanced drops.

Planned Activity:

• Re introduce the corner after the log drop . This will be done by

constructing a large wooden course marker placed on the left hand sideboth before and after the log drop. This will force the rider to take the newroute and be visible far in advance of the feature.

• Re-route the log drop 'chicken run' to improve flow, whilst bettercontrolling rider speed into the next section.

Further Planning:

• None

Trail Name: SpoonsTrail Type: DHGrade: Red / BlackTrail Summary: Open, fast, steep, technical, advanced roots, intermediate rocks, advanced

large jumps and drops, high speed corners.

Planned Activity:

• Construct a new longer (and safer) rock garden. Rocks to be fixed in placeand positioned so that the racing line is the hardest.

• Improve corner beforehand to enhance challenge and improve drainage.

• Rebuild the top step down feature so that it includes three different levelsof drop; rollable, intermediate and expert. As part of this work the run inwill be widened (between fire road and the drops) and drainage improved.

Further Planning:

• Extension of the trail down to the mid forest track (B1 - M interface). Trailcorridor will be parallel to the central fire road, on its east side.

Area Bk

This area has not previously been used by mountain bikers. It has one trail feature, a tabletop, previously built by the BCC but isolated and effectively unused.

General Area

Planned Activity:

• None

Further Planning:

• A thorough plan of the 'skills area' to be completed. Including detailed visualplans of layout showing trail features, seating areas, push up routes andinformation points. Material, plant and labour costs and availability will alsobe produced.

BCC Trails*

*Name TBC

The ultimate goal of the Black Canon Collective (BCC) is to provide permanent, purpose builtmountain bike (MTB) trails in the Longleat area. More specifically; to develop the ‘Allotment’ siteand some surrounding woodland into a professionally run, purpose built, mountain bike trailnetwork, to cater for the full spectrum of abilities and broad range of MTB disciplines.

At this stage the area will be treated as a whole, with all trails fully developed and maintained bythe BCC.
