A BRIEF GLANCE AT BC CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

The current BC Children’s Hospital, locatedon Oak Street in Vancouver, welcomed itsfirst patients in 1982. Since then, the hospitalhas become a world leader in pediatric patientcare, education, research and health promotion,as well as a provincial provider of diagnostic andlaboratory services. Teams of caregivers, includingdoctors, nurses, therapists and other child healthprofessionals provide specialized care for childrenand youth. Children and their families come fromacross the province to receive care in areas suchas intensive care, kidney and bone marrow trans-plantation, open-heart surgery, neurosurgeryand cancer treatment. Pediatricians and familypractitioners consult with specialists at BC Chil-dren’s Hospital on their most complex anddifficult cases.

Children’s participates in teachingprograms with more than a dozen

post-secondary institutions across theprovince and around the world. Through thesepartnerships, the hospital plays a vital role in theeducation of health-care professionals from a widerange of disciplines, and in advancing child healthresearch dedicated to improving the lives of childrentoday and for future generations.

Kim Butler and Frankie RubinoSeen here with his nurse, Kim Butler, FrankieRubino is no stranger to BC Children’s Hospital.Frankie was first admitted to the hospital’s PediatricIntensive Care Unit (PICU) after contracting a respiratoryvirus while undergoing a round of chemotherapy. He hasspent over six months in the PICU and celebrated his firstbirthday on the unit. The PICU at Children’s Hospital is theonly unit of its kind in the province dedicated to treatingcritically ill children.

Miguel CatarataIt’s been said that Miguel Catarataof Port Hardy is one of BC’s sickestkids, having undergone more than 200surgeries and counting. Miguel was bornwith his aorta wrapped around his wind-pipe, restricting his breathing. Doctorshave operated on Miguel countless timesto keep his trachea open and help himbreathe. Miguel’s mom, Sally, cannotsay enough about the amazing teamat Children’s Hospital that savesMiguel’s life on a regular basis.

Dr. Jugpal ArnejaDr. Jugpal Arneja is a pediatric plasticsurgeon at BC Children’s Hospital. He isone of the hospital’s newest recruits, and isamong the best in the world for cleft repair.

BC Children’s Hospital is home to a team of renownedhealth professionals who save children’s lives on adaily basis. Dr. Arneja strongly believes in investingin the place where he works and is proud to be amember of the Children’s Circle of Care.

Lindsey LourencoOn a family trip to Portugal in 2007,Lindsey Lourenco, then 13, lost about 11kilograms in a matter of days. After receiv-ing the devastating news that Lindsey hadleukemia, her father, Tony, insisted on bringingLindsey back to BC Children’s Hospital for treat-ment. After three weeks in an isolation room andseveral months of chemotherapy at Children’s, shefinally showed signs of improvement. Lindseyrecently underwent a bone marrow transplantand is on her way to winning her battle againstcancer. Tony believes his decision to bring hisdaughter home to BC Children’s for treatmentwas one of the best he’s ever made.

Colvin and Kade WongWhen Colvin Wong celebrated his second birthday,and had not yet spoken his first word, his parentsknew something was wrong. In January 2007, doctorsat Children’s confirmed that Colvin had severe toprofound hearing loss in both ears. Today, Colvinwears hearing aids and has undergone cochlearimplant surgery at Children’s Hospital. He is doingwell in school and is catching up on his learning.One of Colvin’s favourite things to do is playingwith his younger brother, Kade.

At BC Children’sHospital, doctors treated Ava with steroids toreduce the swelling and fitted her with glasses at11months old. Ava’s parents have come to rely onBC Children’s for the type of specialized care thatis unavailable anywhere else in the province.
