A Good Way to Start a Conversation

你好 (nǐhǎo) is the universal word for "hello" in Chinese. If you are speaking to an olderperson, or in a formal setting, you can use the more formal version: 您好 (nínhǎo). 认识(rènshi) means "to know" or "to be familiar with." However in some contexts, as in thislesson's dialogue, 认识 (rènshi) also can be used for a first meeting, to say that you are happyto "meet" or "know" a person.

Grammar PointsThe Focus of This Lesson is Chinese Self-Introductions你好,我叫王国易。Nǐhǎo, wǒ jiào Wáng Guóyì."Hello, I'm Wang Guoyi."

你好(nǐhǎo)"Hello" in Chinese is made up of two words: 你, meaning "you" and '好', meaning "good." Onvery formal meetings, you can replace the 你(nǐ) with the formal term for "you," which is 您(nín).叫(jiào)The verb 叫 (jiào) means "to call". So to introduce yourself, you are simply saying, "I'm called______."If you would like to ask someone their name, you can say:

你叫什么名字?Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?"What is your name?"The response:我叫李珍,很高兴认识你。Wǒ jiào Lǐ Zhēn, hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ."I'm Li Zhen, nice to meet you."我也是。

Wǒ yě shì."Likewise."

认识(rènshi)The verb 认识 (rènshi) means "to know" or "to be familiar with," however, in the context ofthe phrase 很高兴认识你。(Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ.) the implication is that of "to meet," sincethis meeting signifies a making of one's acquaintance, and thus, thereafter, they will "know"each other.我也是。Wǒ yě shì.This phrase literally means "I also am." In this dialogue, it is said in response to thestatement "Nice to meet you" to express a corresponding feeling.

Names in Chinese

Names in Chinese are generally made up of either two or three characters. The surname isone character, and is given first, followed by the given name or names. For example:

王国易Wáng Guóyì李珍Lǐ ZhēnSometimes, in more formal settings, a person will simply as for a person's surname.Theywill do this by asking:

您贵姓?Nǐn guì xìng?"Your surname is?"

To which one would respond:

我姓_______.Wǒ xìng _______."My surname is ________."
