New race season, new carBlair Thomson

celebrated his 19th birthday by

thrashing his new car on the tarmac.

The difference is Blair is a race driver, not a boy rac-er, and the tarmac was the Pukekohe raceway where the teenager tried out his new Fiat Punto HGT Abarth for the fi rst series of Production Racing.

He has been building the new car since late January in his parent’s Maurice Thomson Motors workshop - a replacement for the smaller Fiat Uno he previously campaigned with success.

The build time kept his out of this year ’s Targa, which he had entered but didn’t start.

Blair says it was a little disappointing - especially after his great showing in the 2006 event in his Uno.

In its extensive coverage of the event Classic Car described blair ’s efforts in the little Fiat as the drive of the event.

But he is keen to be back for the 2008 event in his new car.

The Punto was built out of two damaged vehicles and has come together well for the new seven race season.

The team also purchased a third ‘parts car ’ recently - a good move as a replace-ment wheel bearing was required on its fi rst outing at the weekend.

Running in the 1.8 to

2.3 litre class, Blair ’s 1800cc Fiat was a bit down on power on the Pukekohe track, but Blair is confi dent handling and braking abilities will make up for that.

Pukekohe was tricky in the heavy rain over the weekend as well, so Blair was pleased just to get through the racing in one piece and get prepared for the next round on Novem-ber 23-25.

Production Racing is for factory cars with a list price of less than $80,000.

Teams are allowed to modify suspension, install

roll bar and race seats and uprated computers. Essen-tially the rest is standard.

There are three classes; 0-1600cc (mostly Suzuki Swifts), 1800-2300cc 2WD (the most varied class) and 4WD (mostly Mitsubishis and Subarus).

Blair is making about 130hp - a bit down on the likes of the Mazda3 turbo in his class which is making about 220hp.

The car is currently back in the Te Awamutu work-shop where he and his dad will try and fi nd the elusive bit of ‘extra power ’.

But Blair says with rounds

coming up at tighter tracks such as Ruapuna, Taupo (the A1 GP meeting), Manfi eld and Teratonga he is confi dent of being close to the front on the car ’s other attributes.

The young Te Awamutu driver is supported by his parents and Maurice Thomson Motors and their OMP race equipment business.

Temco is sponsoring the team to get to the South Island rounds and fellow racing enthusiasts Watson Haworth Motors have sup-plied a tow and service van for the season.

Mitsubishi beef up the LancerBy Dean Taylor

First impression of the new Mitsubishi Lancer is the bold statement made by the ‘nose

cone’ type feature - as a friend says ‘almost an F1 infl uence’.

It does give the Lancer a purpose-ful look - and fair enough because this car is wider and longer than pre-viously and has power that makes it a performance leader in its class.

I drove Te Awamutu Motors entry level SX model with the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmis-sion) gearbox and found it was a more than willing performer.

The two litre MIVEC engine puts out 115kW of power and 201Nm of torque.

The engine is shared through the VR and VRX range and the SX and VRX models have a fi ve speed manual option.

Mitsubishi’s CVT allows plenty of power to get to the road and doesn’t seriously affect economy. It still takes a bit of getting used to, but there is a six speed manual Sport Mode option.

My car sat on 16” alloys (the VRX gets the nice 18” wheels) and shared standard features such as cruise control, integrated CD stereo with MP3 compatibility and trip computer with such information as distance until empty, average fuel

economy and average speed.The interior was fairly standard,

but practical. Leather in the V mod-els would be a preferable option, plus they get more steering wheel mounted audio and cruise control options. VRX also has paddle shift for the CVT option.

Mitsubishi has carefully posi-tioned the Lancer in the mid-family

saloon segment and succeeded.The extra size makes it workable

for four adults, or two adults and three children, while there is good interior and luggage storage.

Safety has been addressed with reinforced body areas working together with crumple zones, belts and airbags to protect driver and passengers.

Brake, stability and traction control systems assist the driver in a variety of diffi cult and testing conditions.

Overall the Lancer is a very good drive and it has personality. Mitsubishi also offer a range of ac-cessories to further personalise the vehicle - and then of course there is also the Evo!!

Getting it off for Kiwi-A-Salt

When hot rodding wife Barb Sundgren thought she might be able to help the Kiwi-A-

Salt fundraiser a la ‘Calendar Girls’ style she was hoping 11 other girls might volunteer to ‘get their gear off ’.

Once the word got out amongst the hot rod sisterhood she had to cut off applications when the number rose to over 50.

The resulting Kiwi-A-Salt Calendar Gals calendar features 55 tastefully na-ked hot rodding and drag racing wives, daughters and girlfriends dedicated to helping Bill Ward and his team return to Bonneville for Speed Week 2008, the 60th anniversary of the famous event.

The calendar also features the full story of Kiwi-A-Salt - New Zealand’s fi rst team to tackle the Bonneville salt fl ats in a car (1979, 1982, 1984).

Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club member Craig Houston was a member of the team for the two visits to Bon-neville in the 1980’s, and he is an in-tegral part of the 2008 challenge which aims to smash the current 184mph

(296km/h) XF/BRMR record by do-ing what Burt Munro did - setting their sights on 200mph.

The new car is a modifi ed roadster with a rear mounted blown Ford fl athead V8 and amazing aerodynamics.

The Otorohanga dealer-ship has the new X-Trail available from tomorrow - so invite anyone interested in a test drive to contact them to arrange a time.

Nissan say the time has come to move away from compact 4WDs built for the city and create something that can actually handle the outdoors.

They have taken 50 years of 4x4 innovation and packed it into a compact 4WD.

The basic variants are the ST and Ti, with cloth or leather interior options and the choice of six speed manual or CVT automatic transmissions.

All use the 125kW 2.5 litre, DOHC four cylinder petrol engine that develops 226Nm of torque.

Transmission options are the six speed manual gearbox, which has been designed to be quieter and better perform-ing than the previous gearbox, and the Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission with a six speed manual mode.

Both are designed to maximise performance and economy, with the automatic being the most frugal of the pair.

The base model ST runs in All Mode 4WD and includes front, side and curtain airbags, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, keyless entry, power windows and mirrors, cruise control, air condi-tioning, an engine immobiliser, four speaker CD stereo and

16” wheels.Remaining variants get the

Intelligent 4x4 System, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, Electronic Stability and Active Brake Limited Slip.

The 4x4 System moni-tors driving conditions to ensure an ideal distribution of engine torque. It can be used in 2WD, Auto or Lock modes.

Hill Start Assist prevents roll-back in steep driving conditions and the Descent Control automatically utilises the ABS system to keep the vehicle at a control-led descent rate in diffi cult conditions.

The Active Brake Limited Slip system sends power to the wheel with the most grip when it senses traction has been lost on two or more wheels.

The Ti models run on 17” alloy wheels (the ST-L gets an upgrade to 16” alloys) and gets a sunroof, fog lamps, leather steering wheel and shifters, chrome trim, six speaker, six stacker CD/MP3 player and better air conditioning.

Top of the range Ti-L has the all leather, heated, power seats.

While the X-Trail is a compact 4WD, clever design work makes use of all available space.

A new rear folding seat system can carry three passengers or, when utilising the split seat system, two passengers plus luggage, or a full back luggage/cargo compartment.

A drawer system hides valuable items out of sight, or it can be removed to provide even more cargo space.

Teams of Nissan salespeople had their chance to put the new Nissan X-Trail to the test to ensure the company’s

claim that the vehicle was the ‘real deal’ was true.

Auto-sparky staying put

Auto electrician Bruce Gray says the most common ques-tion he gets asked on the

phone these days is ‘where are you now?’

Its a frustrating question because he is exactly where he has been for over 30 years.

The rumour of the shift came about because of a feature I wrote for the Courier about Davies Construction.

Business owner Daniel Davies then owned the Albert Park Drive property leased by Bruce Gray, and had plans to build another story for his own offi ce and design showroom.

The long-term auto electrical business was not affected by this plan - but ru-mours of a shift were started.

Since then plans have changed for Mr Davies and Bruce Gray Auto Electrical has a new landlord.

Mr Gray says when he shifted to the

building all that time ago it was because it was seen as a good location - and nothing has changed in the respect.

He has been in the industry over 45 years and believes in offering clients ‘old school’ service while still keeping up with all the trends.

Mr Gray says over the years he be-lieves he has been an innovator - offer-ing Saturday morning hours to suit busy clients before other workshops, keeping up with the play in the industry in terms of technology and developing what he calls the total car care service - where he will fi nd the right person to fi x any vehicle problem outside his scope.

The workshop offers full electrical parts and servicing, auto air condition-ing repair and service, full tune up for best performance and economy, an extensive battery range, full fi eld service and Mr Gray is also qualifi ed to repair power tools.

He carries an extensive range of diag-

nostic and repair equipment, including the latest scanner technology for most makes and models of vehicles.

Above all, his motto is customer sat-isfaction and he believes it is paramount that clients get the service they expect.

KTM dream job beckonsIf any job was going

to lure Wayne Shaw (right) away from his Te

Awamutu family and business it was a national position with KTM - and that is exactly what has happened.

After 17 years in the motorcycle parts and sales industry in Te Awamutu, Mr Shaw has left to become national sales and marketing manager for KTM.

Mr Shaw started in his new position this week and was launched straight into the biggest campaign of the year - Big Boys Toys.

But he is taking the chal-lenge head-on and says it is exactly what he is looking forward to in his new role.

Mr Shaw has sold his half share in Te Awamutu’s Farm & Trail Motorcycles back to its founder Alan Hockly.

That company has a six year relationship with KTM - nearly as long as the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer has been in New Zealand.

Mr Shaw says the com-pany has a great culture, which is why he is rapt to be heading to head offi ce.

He believes his experience as a dealer will be invaluable in his new job.

The New Zealand com-pany is based in East Tamaki. It works in conjunction with KTM Australia and is also factory backed.

Mr Shaw will be look-ing after the country’s 22 dealerships, running national campaigns, looking after orders to make sure dealers have the stock they want

on the fl oor and supporting events such as Big Boys Toys, National Fieldays (which Mr Shaw was instrumental in get-ting KTM involved with) and competitions such as Moto-X and Enduro.

KTM New Zealand run a dealer Moto-X and Enduro team which Mr Shaw will be responsible for supporting.

He is looking forward to the travel that is also associ-ated with the role - regular trips to Australia and the Austrian factory and hope-fully such events as the Milan Motor Show.

The family is also looking forward to the change.

He and his wife Jasmin have been in Te Awamutu

all their lives and are looking forward to living hopefully near his work and creating new opportunities and rela-tionships in Auckland.

Mr Shaw will make the move initially and look for a new home and his wife and their three children will join him at the end of the school year.
