Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

New Year’s is every Russian’s favorite time of year. The cities glow with festooned lights, the wintry sky explodes with gala fireworks, and the theaters and palaces are full of merry-makers enjoying performances and elegant balls. Winter is also the time for which most of the country’s buildings were designed. The brightly colored palaces and the gold-starred onion domes of the churches stand out against the white background and take on an unforgettable splendor.

Discover the magic of the holidays in Russia on this exceptional New Year’s program in St. Petersburg and Moscow. In St. Petersburg, explore the Hermitage, home to one of the world’s greatest art collections; visit the Peter & Paul Fortress, the final resting place of the tsars; and listen to a choir singing joyous hymns of the season. Other high-lights are a troika ride across the snow-covered landscape in a royal park; a visit to a 19th-century palace housing an exquisite collection of Fabergé eggs; and a gala New Year’s Eve celebration. Here, the Russians will prove they remember all the traditions of sumptuous hospitality.

In Moscow, see the world-class impressionists and early modern works at the Pushkin Museum and those of the spectacular icons at the Tretyakov Gallery. See the Kremlin as it ought to be seen, with the snow evocatively covering Red Square. There will be visits to the Kremlin’s collections of jewels, silver, costumes, and carriages, as well as to its churches. A performance of the legendary Bolshoi will also highlight our stay in Moscow.

I hope you will join me to discover the cultural treasures of St. Petersburg and Moscow at this very special time of the year.

Sincerely,Stephan WolohojianCurator, Department of European Paintings
