Stream List

Each stream has a fixed quota.

Besides the fixed quota, a small number of

quotas will be set aside for floating. These

floating quotas will be allocated to streams

according to students’ demands.

Given each stream has a quota, students will

be assigned to streams based on their CGPA

and some may not be assigned to their 1st

preference stream.

Stream Allocation

For students admitted to Year 1 in 2017-18, cumulative

GPA (CGPA) of first year (including summer term) will

be considered.

Once a stream reaches its quota, a student indicating

this stream as first choice, but with a CGPA lower than

the last student admitted to that stream, will not get into

it. That student will get his/her second preference,

unless that second choice stream is also full, in which

case he/she will get his/her third preference, unless it is

also full…

Stream Allocation (cont’d)

Through this allocation process, each stream

will acquire its minimum CGPA requirement,

which varies from year to year depending on

student demand (serving a good reference for

appeal cases).

Tie-breaker situation:

When two or more students with the same

CGPA compete for the last place of an

individual stream, the tie-breaker (i.e. CGPA of

the Business Core courses taken in the first

year) will be adopted.

For students directly admitted to Year 2 in 2018-19,

GPA of the 1st term of 2018-19 will be considered.

Details of the stream allocation arrangements

have been sent to relevant students by email on

5 Nov 2018.

Average student CGPAs for entering the streams in last two

stream allocation exercises are as follows:

Remarks: There are students with very good CGPA entering each

of the stream. The average CGPAs are for reference only and they

vary from year to year.

Why Quotas for BBA Major Streams?

Why not simply allocate every student to the stream

he or she most prefers?

IMPOSSIBLE. Each BBA stream is a specialist and is

housed in a single department, where staff headcount is

affected by student numbers (resource implications).

Stream popularity varies from year to year but volatility in

staff headcount would be against the best interests of

Lingnan University and the student body as a whole.

Since Lingnan University emphasizes research as well

as teaching, student demand is not the only

consideration when allocating resources and manpower.

Who Decides What You Prefer?

You are your own person

As adults, you are expected to express

your preferences in GENUINE order

Not based on what your friends like

Not based on your parents’ commands

Nobody is denied for his/her career commitment

For example, if you don’t get your preferred

stream, you may still be able to get a job in

that field, or after graduation you can take

professional diploma programmes that enable

you to enter your targeted specialism

Choose “Stream Selection for Year 2 BBA Students”

Indicate your ranked preference for all streams.

Once submitted, your selection will be saved in the

Banner System for stream allocation.

You can view your selection by clicking into “Stream

Selection for Year 2 BBA Students” again.

Besides, you will receive an email acknowledgement of

your selection.

User guide of the Stream Selection System will be provided via

email.

All students MUST submit their stream preference during this

period:

Start : 13 Nov 2018 (Tue) 00:00

End : 19 Nov 2018 (Mon) 23:59

If you do not submit your stream preference during the period, a

stream will be assigned to you by the Director of Undergraduate

Business Programmes.

Stream allocation results will be announced on 28 Nov 2018 (Wed)

via email.

More details about the stream allocation will be announced by

email and posted on the webpage of Undergraduate Programmes

Office.

Q. What if my CGPA is not good enough to

get into the stream of my choice?

A. In such cases, you would be allocated to

your second choice (if your CGPA is

good enough) and so on.

What if…?

Q. What if I am on Academic Probation (AP)

now?

A. You still need to submit your stream

preference by the deadline (i.e. 19 Nov 2018,

23:59).

You will not be considered in the current

exercise, but if and when you lift probation

you will be allocated to a stream.

(Be sure to study hard to get CGPA to rise to

above 1.67)

Q. What if I am not on AP now, but I go

onto AP at the end of next term?

A. Your stream allocation will remain

unchanged.

(But take great care to get CGPA back

above 1.67)

What if…? (cont’d)

A student who wishes for special reasons to transfer to

any other programmes (including the BBA-RIM

programme) may

1. consult his/her academic adviser,

2. must complete an “Application for Changing Study

Programme”, and

3. submit to the Registry at least two weeks before

commencement of the term from which the change is

intended.9

E.g. For changes to be effective from T2, 2018-19,

applications should be submitted to the Registry latest by 3

Jan 2019 (Thu).
