It’s all about the details! We’re excited about the future and we’ll be paying attention

to all the details in every aspect of customer service at Bay Port.

Launching a new attitude

[email protected]

We are launching a new attitude at Bay Port.Under the new ownership we have refocused on a number of vital areas like retention, recruitment and training of exceptional staff. All our key staff members stayed with us and we have added new crew including two more technicians experienced in both diesel and gas, additional security, janitorial, fiberglass and refinishing staff as well as a full time boat cleaner. Our designated training room has been

busy with essential training in health and safety, accounting, inventory management and service

management. Our technicians have travelled the province to upgrade their training from manufacturers like Mercury and Volvo Penta. To encourage excellent team building we've developed programs to provide staff with complimentary theatre and hockey tickets, and invite open communications between the general manager and company president as well as direct conversations with our customers.

I started working in the boat business in 1972 following a few years of travel by land and sailboat around Europe. From 1972 to 1990 I worked for sailboat builders Grampian Marine, CS Yachts and C&C Yachts. I also sold Tanzers out of a dealership in Port Credit for five years as well. During this time I started crewing on racing boats in the Toronto area and delivered charter boats to the Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.

In 1990 myself, my wife and children moved to Midland to work as a sailboat broker. Under the banner of Bay Harbour Yachts, I worked out of Bay Port Marina for almost 20 years selling sailboats – and the occasional power boat too.

In 2010 I started working from my home and joined forces with my old friend Dave Harris and the crew at Harris & Ellis Yachts. After working on my own for many years, it was fun getting back into a group atmosphere and sharing listings, clients, and experiences with a great bunch of professionals. I am an active racer out of the Midland Bay Sailing Club, have chaired the Georgian Bay Regatta for a stint and do a lot of volunteer work with the Club's sailing school where I maintain the boats and docks used by the school.

We understand that the public wireless internet has been less than perfect over the past few years. Since the ownership transition, we have put a large focus on understanding, testing, and improving our existing network infrastructure. We have located two critical problems with the system, and its set up. These problems have been corrected and our tests show a 100% improvement. We anticipate continuing the testing, and making improvements to our network set up and infrastructure throughout our peak season. Once we see the system under peak demand we will be able to identify any further shortcomings that may be present. We are working on a short user tutorial. This tutorial will help provide a better understanding of how to connect, and use our public wireless internet service. It is anticipated that due to demand in the peak season, some bandwidth restrictions will be activated. These restrictions allow the system to manage the internet demand by balancing the bandwidth availability between all users. We understand the importance of having reliable access to a strong internet connection in this day and age. We assure you that our public wireless internet service is a high priority for us, because we know it is a high priority for our boaters.

At Mom’s, we care!

We want our dock staff to know you and our technicians to know you and your boat. Our door is always open for you as well, so please ask if there's something we can do to help.We have made a number of changes to ensure our customers enjoy the best boating experience possible including: a significant decrease in dockage rates; reinstating the pre-payment discount plan; lengthened our operating hours; redesigned the chandlery to showcase a larger inventory range; put an equipment and dock maintenance program in place; added more security cameras; held our labour rate (despite increased costs); simplified the work order approval process to speed up service delivery; and redesigned our Wi-Fi system for better performance. This season we will add more fuel dock attendants and dock staff and have upgraded their safety and procedural training. Also watch for new signage at the marina, a facelift of the main building, additional lighting, and two new playgrounds for our little ones. Some docks will also be repositioned for better maneuverability within the marina. At Bay Port we want to be an integral part of the community. We are committed to supporting area youth programs, our local hospital and cultural centre. This year we welcome 150 new boaters to Bay Port, including many from Bay Moorings Marina as the marina is undergoing a complete redevelopment. Welcome aboard everyone!Let the boating begin!

Enjoy the best boating experience

Welcome to our all of the new customers joining us this season. We look forward to meeting you and invite you to join in on all of our events.

Family Fun at Bay Port

What's happening this summer?

Our Boater's Flea Market is back for another year. We supply the tables and our boaters supply the merchandise. This spring when you are digging out all that boating gear, sort out those extra items that you haven't used in ages and bring them with you on June 9th. We will be firing up the barbecue at noon so be sure to drop by!

The Midland Power & Sail Squadron will be attending our June 9th Flea Market with their boating simulator. They will be performing courtesy vessel inspections to ensure your boat is ship shape and meets all safety requirements. They will also be offering hour long chart reading seminars. Call or drop by the marina office to book your inspection and sign up for a seminar.

Canada Day weekend is the date of our ever popular Sail Rendezvous. It's a fun family weekend to meet your fellow sailors and enjoy the beauty of Georgian Bay. Pot luck dinner,

pancake breakfast, kids' fishing contest and trips by dinghy up the Moon River are some of the fun things to look forward to!

Our Powerboat Rendezvous will head to Parry Sound, the Bustard Islands and the North Channel on a ten day cruise up the bay. There is no better way to experience Georgian Bay and make new boating friends.

The Guys & Gals Sailing Regatta heads out for a day of fun sailing competition on Aug. 25. We have partnered with our neighbours at the Midland Bay Sailing Club, Wye Heritage and Beacon Bay Marina. Every boat must have at least one female crew member. Our Bay Port sailors have brought the trophy back for the last three years!

Join us mid-day at the gazebo for a lunch of fresh local corn at our annual corn roast.

September brings our Fall Events Day where we have a full day of fun for the whole family - dinghy poker run, scavenger hunt, pet pageant, buffet dinner and dance with live entertainment. Celebrate the season with your Bay Port friends as we say thank you for another awesome season of boating!

Assistant ManagerPatti French

Many of our fuel dock attendants and dock runners are returning for their second or third summer and we will have an experienced crew ready to catch your lines at dry stack, on the fuel dock and at your slip.

Our Bay Moorings customers will recognize some familiar faces as some of the Bay Moorings yard staff and students are now part of our crew at Bay Port.

Look for their new eye catching red shirts waiting for you on the dock!

We've been boating our entire life and have enjoyed almost 20 years of boating from Bay Port. We switched to Dry Stack ten years ago to take advantage of the conveniences and protection of our investment. The bottom wash at each haul-out means we don't need to spend valuable weekend time washing our hull and the heated indoor storage means there's almost no winter prep. When we sold our previous boat in 2016, the benefits of the indoor storage were evident with the many compliments on the condition of the boat and how well the '99 Chris Craft held its value. We only discovered the valet service last year, but found it to be a great way to save time on the weekend.Overall, we've very much enjoyed the staff and service at Bay Port, which is why we've referred our family and friends.

Why it is imperative to have a GPS/Chartplotter or Multifunctiondisplay on board and not rely on your phone app or hand held device

RaymarineHydroTouchChartplotter

Today’s Electronic Navigation

GPS was introduced to the recreational boating market in the late 1980s increasing safety and enjoyability by giving us latitude and longitude. Then electronic chart plotters display the vessel’s position directly on an electronic chart and now fully integrated multifunction navigation displays incorporate GPS, electronic charts, radar, depth sounders, etc in a single display. Now apps for hand held devices like phones and tablets allow electronic chart plotting. Boaters question the need for dedicated electronic navigation system. Although hand-held devices make an excellent back-up to a properly installed electronic nav system, they’re rarely an effective alternative. These systems are first and foremost a safety system. It is imperative that they function at all times in all weather and sea conditions. Most hand-held devices aren’t waterproof and are likely to suffer damage from rain or spray. Tablets and phones are also difficult to see in bright sunshine and often can’t be seen while wearing polarized sunglasses. The LCD screens are also susceptible to going black when they heat up in the sunshine.

Much of the cost of a GPS/Chartplotter or Multifunction display is in the LCD screen. They are exceptionally bright for direct sunshine viewability and don’t turn black or shut down in the most punishing heat, even after hours in direct sunlight. Most phones and tablets are not designed to withstand the forces of on board shock and vibration. Another issue is they’re often used on batteries that can easily shut down without warning due to a low battery. Therefore, since you are required to take all means possible to insure the safety of you, your family and guests when on the water a dedicated electronic navigation system designed for the marine environment including a high-bright LCD with optically bonded screen, waterproof, built to withstand shock, vibration and heat and is permanently powered from your boats electrical system is the correct safety system. Many multifunction navigation systems today will work in conjunction with phones and tablets today such the Raymarine Axiom and Axiom Pro systems and it's fun and convenient to use them on-board but not a good idea to rely on these hand-held devices as my primary electronic navigation system.

Have you checked your flares lately? Transport Canada regulations require pleasure craft boaters to carry up-to-date flares on board. However, there is growing concern about flares – from the initial cost and concerns about safe storage and handling of an explosive on board, to lack of knowledge of proper use and the environmental concerns of appropriate disposal. And then they must be replaced every four years. It's a contentious issue, but there may be a light at the end of the tunnel. Modern LED technology may replace pyrotechnics. Currently the United States Coast Guard has approved a new electronic flare made by Weems & Plath. It's battery operated, flashes SOS for about six hours and is visible up to 10

miles away. Activated by a simple twist, it is submersible and floats. Other advantages include replaceable batteries meaning the distress signal will last much longer than six hours – something a one-shot flare can never do. While Transport Canada is not prepared to replace traditional flares yet, the idea is on the radar, and continues to be studied. More information is available on-line.

Are Electronic Flares On The Horizon? Here’s what our Bay Port boaters have to say... and please feel

free to share your boating experiences with us

Testimonials

First off, we sailed many ocean miles in our lifetime and simply put, nothing in the world compares to the Great Lakes when it comes to sailing, no matter what type or size of boat.

Here are some of the advantages. We are so lucky to have all this in our 'backyard':· no saltwater· no hurricanes · no sharks and other man-eating critters· 50 thousand sheltered anchorages in Georgian Bay alone. Being on the 'Bay' for more than 45 years, we have probably seen half of it so far· white sandy beaches and great swimming· good fishing and great wild life· great scenery with beautiful sunsets· we could go on forever….

As to Bay Port, it is quite simple why 2018 rdwill be our 23 year in your marina:

· extremely friendly staff, · we did not meet and have dealings with everyone, but especially you, Patti, as well as Eddy, Vic, Scott, James, Larry and Marcy make/made our time spent in Bay Port such a pleasant one

Of course the fundamentals of a good marina, which are so important, make Bay Port the one and only choice:

· Bay Port is a very protected from inclement weather marina· the marina's location! Bay Port is 1 and ½ hours away from 5 million inhabitants of the GTA

· floating docks. Over the years, we have seen the water level rise and fall eight feet· great launch and haul-out services!!· local boating supplies when needed· extremely clean washrooms· friendly gas dock staff· the social events, i.e., Winterfest, corn roasts, flea market, fall dance, etc.· and, we have met a lot of good people that became good friends over the years. Can't wait to see them in the Spring

Patti, these are just a few items that come to mind. We could write a book. All good!

We hope this helps. And we hope for you to be in business for many years to come.

Bay Port offers stress free boating at its best. Here’s some ‘need to know before you go’ information.

Nautical Notes

Valv-tectAt Bay Port we are pleased to now offer both ValvTect Marine Gasoline and Diesel at our fuel dock.Did you know your boat's gasoline engine operates at higher RPMs and loads than your car or truck and consumes up to 10 times more fuel per hour of operation?ValvTect Marine Gasoline is specially formulated for marine engines to prevent ethanol fuel problems like phase separation, moisture, poor stability and power-robbing carbon deposits while maximizing performance. No additional additives are needed.Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuels destabilize quickly and are more susceptible to bacterial growth and filter clogs. ValvTect Marine Diesel is specially formulated to improve lubricity, disperses water, inhibits corrosion and stabilizes fuel. It maximizes engine performance and protection without the need for additional additives.

Store UpdateYou will notice a difference in our Chandlery this summer. We have increased inventory levels and brought many items out of the Parts Department and onto our store shelves. Watch for our monthly specials and new products!Don't see what you are looking for? Let us know and we would be happy to source items for you. Many items are available the next day from our suppliers.

Have you checked your inflatable PFD?

It is important to visually inspect your

inflatable life jacket before each use. • Check that the inflator status indicator is

green. Some PFDs have more than one status indicator! Refer to your product manual if you're not sure.

• Manually inflate your PFD with the oral inflator to check the inflation valve. Hold under water and check for bubbles.

• Let your inflated PFD sit out overnight and then check for firmness.

Remember that inflatable PFDs only count as a part of your required safety equipment if you are wearing it!

We Monitor VHF Channel 68 There's always someone available to catch your lines when you are returning to the dock. Give us a call when you are approaching the marina and our Dock Hands will be there to assist. Both our Fuel Dock and Marina Office monitor VHF Channel 68 and are happy to assist!

Valet ServiceWouldn't it be nice to arrive at the boat Friday afternoon and have your fuel and water tanks full, the holding tank pumped out and everything ready to go for the weekend? It's possible! Call our office to arrange our weekday valet service and we will take care of it for you. All we require is a credit card on file for the fuel purchase.

The art of the slow passWake is something we all have to deal with, but with a little common courtesy it needn't ruin the day and be the source of stress it often is. We want to share the art of the “Slow Pass”.We're borrowing this advice from the blogs of those, like the Loopers, who travel the 4,800 km inland waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico called the Intracoastal Waterway or ICW.First, a slow pass doesn't mean chugging up behind someone at 20 knots and then right before passing slowing down to 10 knots – all that does is throw a monster wake at the boat you're overtaking.Let's review one of the ICW blogs that specifies slowing down when being overtaken by a faster boat. “ICW courtesy is for the overtaking boat to hail the forward boat on Channel 16 and ask permission to pass on one side or the other at which time the overtaken boat slows to idle (about 3 knots) and the overtaking boat passes slowly by.” It doesn't take long – less than 30 seconds if it is timed right.

Regular ICW travelers report that the maneuver often needs no radio contact with both boats coming off plane at the same time. “The forward boat notices the boat aft, slowing down to idle, the boat then passes slowly to port, all without use of the VHF. About 90 per cent of passes are silent and the overtaking boat passes slowly about 90 per cent of the time.”If the forward boat doesn't slow down, the passing boat often speeds by – causing

uncomfortable wake. Remember, you are responsible for your wake and any damage it does.“One more hint, after the overtaking boat passes, the overtaken boat should move across his wake, behind the boat, so when resuming normal speed, the increased wake that results will not wash over the overtaken.” The art of the slow pass, it's a courtesy we could all consider.

Wake is something we all have to contend with while boating but with a little common courtesy called the “slow pass” it won’t ruin your day.

Bay Port offers convenience and savings to our boaters. It’s all part or commitment to ensuring the best in customer service.

Drop into our office or email us for a list of available slips and information on our dockage specials. New annual dockage customers receive a 20% Welcome Discount!

Cradle MaintenanceOnce your boat has made it into the water for another season take a few minutes to look over your cradle. Now is the time to touch up the paint, remove cradle pads for refurbishing and make any required structural repairs. Clearly labelling your cradle with your last name and boat name help our yard staff to easily identify your cradle in the yard. We are happy to assist with this task, just give our Service Department a call to arrange.

Gate KeysCards for our security gate are available at the marina office. Customers receive one free gate card and can get extras for a $10 deposit. The security card allows you to access the marina property after hours and also to our swimming pool.

Dock Box ProgramNeed some extra storage at your dock? Fibreglass rectangular and triangular dock boxes are available for a one time deposit of $400. We will install it at your dock, move it for you if you change locations, and refund the deposit in full when the box is no longer required.

Automatic Account PaymentsWe are happy to process your marina account balance automatically each month on your credit card. Drop by the office and complete a Credit Card Authorization form to set up auto pay. Our Credit Card Authorization form is also available on our website under the Resources tab.

I am an active racer out of the Midland Bay Sailing Club, have chaired the Georgian Bay Regatta for a stint and do a lot of volunteer work with the Club's sailing school where I maintain the boats and docks used by the school.
