There is a lot of complaining and whining going on out there – it seems to be the greater part of what we are hearing these days. Most of these conversations are not productive. Not only are they counter-productive, they can also be detrimental to one’s health, both mentally and physi- cally. Scientists believe stress is the primary cause of many illnesses. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, stress accounts for a large per- centage of doctor visits. Obvious results of stress are headaches, viruses including colds and the flu, stomach aches, muscle pains, etc. Prolonged or chronic stress can have a huge impact on the immune system. The greater the stress, the more susceptible one becomes to the germs floating around. The body can become too worn out to fight off illness. Ulcers can be aggravated and migraines triggered. Even the skin can be affected with acne and hives. There is actually research linking heart disease, mental disorders, cancer and diabetes to stress. Our current economic woes are extremely serious and worrisome. It is clear our economic problems are not going away soon. Obviously, it may not be possible to limit the stress, but there are positive ways of coping with it. We have to take control and move our business and personal lives in the right direction. How can you control the stress level to which your body is subjected? The keynote speaker at the HARDI convention this year in Phoenix, Arizona was a comedian. His main thrust was promoting laughter as a tool for reducing stress. Whether you are sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic late for a meeting ready to put your fist through the windshield, weeping while reading your 401K state- ment and seeing your retirement being pushed further away, or skipping a family vacation and explaining to your children that you need to conserve money, find something funny to think about. Diverting the stress and getting in a good laugh (even a quick chuckle) will make you feel better. These stressful situations are seri- ous, but how does stressing about them help? Laughter can help you clear your head to help you make sensible and more logical decisions. It might also help others around you to do the same. Another speaker I recently had the pleasure of listening to at a business function discussed finding a balance. He said everything has a front and a back, or good and bad, and those two sides are inseparable. He urged us to find the best balance in order to function effectively. He said “to succeed is the other side of failure and no matter how good I am, success will always contain some failure and failure will always contain some success”. You must negotiate the balance. It has also been said that diet, rest and exercise can help one cope better with stress and relieve tension. Eat healthy foods and take a walk. Try to get enough sleep. Inadequate sleep not only makes you tired and unable to think clearly, it can also jeopardize your physical health by facilitating weight gain and presenting greater susceptibility to illness. Try deep breathing exercises. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth; hold the breath for five seconds and try to think of something pleasant. Try to clear your mind. Most importantly, don’t panic. Try to keep everything in perspective. Stress can only become toxic to your body if you allow it to. As we approach this holiday season, slow down and spend time with loved ones. Ruminate on all the positive things in your life.
