Dealing with today’s tough economic times has becomea huge topic of discussion at trade organization meet-ings, consultant group presentations, banks, businesses,family gatherings… Basically in every direction oneturns, people are expressing themselves regarding thedifficulties with which they are faced. There is a lot ofcomplaining and whining going on out there – it seemsto be the greater part of what we are hearing these days.

Most of these conversations are not productive. Notonly are they counter-productive, they can also bedetrimental to one’s health, both mentally and physi-cally. Scientists believe stress is the primary cause ofmany illnesses. According to the U.S. Center for DiseaseControl and Prevention, stress accounts for a large per-centage of doctor visits. Obvious results of stress areheadaches, viruses including colds and the flu, stomachaches, muscle pains, etc.

Prolonged or chronic stress can have a huge impact onthe immune system. The greater the stress, the moresusceptible one becomes to the germs floating around.The body can become too worn out to fight off illness.Ulcers can be aggravated and migraines triggered.Even the skin can be affected with acne and hives.There is actually research linking heart disease, mentaldisorders, cancer and diabetes to stress.

Our current economic woes are extremely serious andworrisome. It is clear our economic problems are notgoing away soon. Obviously, it may not be possible tolimit the stress, but there are positive ways of copingwith it. We have to take control and move our businessand personal lives in the right direction. How can youcontrol the stress level to which your body is subjected?

The keynote speaker at the HARDI convention this yearin Phoenix, Arizona was a comedian. His main thrustwas promoting laughter as a tool for reducing stress.Whether you are sitting in bumper-to-bumper trafficlate for a meeting ready to put your fist through thewindshield, weeping while reading your 401K state-ment and seeing your retirement being pushed furtheraway, or skipping a family vacation and explaining toyour children that you need to conserve money, findsomething funny to think about. Diverting the stressand getting in a good laugh (even a quick chuckle) willmake you feel better. These stressful situations are seri-ous, but how does stressing about them help? Laughter

can help you clear your head to help you make sensibleand more logical decisions. It might also help othersaround you to do the same.

Another speaker I recently had the pleasure of listeningto at a business function discussed finding a balance. Hesaid everything has a front and a back, or good and bad,and those two sides are inseparable. He urged us to findthe best balance in order to function effectively. He said“to succeed is the other side of failure and no matterhow good I am, success will always contain some failureand failure will always contain some success”. You mustnegotiate the balance.

It has also been said that diet, rest and exercise can helpone cope better with stress and relieve tension. Eathealthy foods and take a walk. Try to get enough sleep.Inadequate sleep not only makes you tired and unableto think clearly, it can also jeopardize your physicalhealth by facilitating weight gain and presenting greatersusceptibility to illness. Try deep breathing exercises.Inhale through your nose and exhale through yourmouth; hold the breath for five seconds and try to thinkof something pleasant. Try to clear your mind.

Most importantly, don’t panic. Try to keep everything inperspective. Stress can only become toxic to your bodyif you allow it to. As we approach this holiday season,slow down and spend time with loved ones. Ruminateon all the positive things in your life. Use the dawning ofa new year to make positive resolutions in your life.
