our awesome aquatic and Fitness centre features a purpose-built 25-metre heated pool and modern gym. membership includes access to the pool, gym, fitness testing, fitness programmes, circuit training and helpful, friendly and experienced staff. some classes and the pool are free every lunchtime for members, staff and all students.

there are two excellent cafés at Windermere Campus, Rex’s Café in the Rex Williams Centre and Café X in the Student Learning Centre. the Bongard Centre has a student café on Level 5 with awesome views across the city and harbour.

Kahurangi Student Services at both campuses are here to assist you with academic advice ranging from essay writing, study skills and referencing, to maths, computing and more. Peer tutors, computer drop-in suites, reader/writer assistance and disability support are all readily available.

our International Student Support team is always on hand with 24-hour a day assistance. We can help you with applications, academic records, qualification equivalence, interviews and enrolments, accommodation and transport.

our Information centres, located at both campuses, and the International Office at Windermere Campus can advise you and answer your enquiries about programme details, financial matters, Polytechnic facilities and liaise with other campus support services.

We have two libraries providing you with a wide range of resource materials in both electronic and print format, books, databases, magazines, audio tapes, Cd RoMs and Internet. We also offer an interloan service from other libraries.

the It Services team provides over 450 computers in 15+ computer suites on both campuses. When you become a student at the Polytechnic, you will receive a free Polytechnic email account, internet and wireless access and file storage.

Xu Huan (Happy)National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing, Level 5. New Zealand is the last pure land in the world. I want to be a vet nurse, working with animals. I got a working holiday visa and worked for nearly 10 months before my first semester. one reason for choosing tauranga is to improve my english. there are not lots of Chinese students here, so I have to speak more English.

i am enjoying the animal care programme. there are many different animals in our class. All my tutors are very nice, with many years experience working with animals.

accommodationHomestayHomestay is when a student lives with a new Zealand family in their home. this is a good environment to be immersed in the new Zealand culture. all homestay accommodation is assessed for suitability by the international Pastoral Care Coordinator. applications for homestay accommodation should be made well in advance of arrival in tauranga.

students choosing this option should be prepared for differences compared to living with their own family. Generally students will have their own room and most meals provided. Students may be expected to help with some of the household duties. there will also be house rules

to follow. For example, there may be limits on telephone use, computer use, or watching television. these types of rules vary between homestay families.

We will match a family as closely as possible to what students require and what the family is looking for. for instance, if a student likes pets or vegetarian food, the Polytechnic will attempt to place this student with a similar family.

costs of Homestaythe cost of homestay accommodation in tauranga is approximately NZ$220 - $250 per week, inclusive of food, power and laundry, but exclusive of telephone, Internet and transport expenses.

Amit Ashok Kamble (AUPP Programme, India)Diploma Applied Computing Level 6 BSc Computer Science (University of Waikato pathway)i’m from maharashtra in india and chose to go to auPP in nagpur because they have very computer focused courses.

i would suggest to auPP students to come here. BoPP is really good and the pathway that I am doing is with the university of Waikato, which has really good world rankings in Computer science. Doing the diploma to degree pathway is a good opportunity, because in India we need to complete the degree, but the Level 6 diploma can also get you a good job here in new Zealand.

i study at the Bongard Campus. Being an international student has been an awesome experience. All my teachers are good, frank and friendly, ready to help every time. It has been a good opportunity for me. apart from being a student, I’m also tutoring other students in web development and C programming; helping them and sharing my knowledge. i have also developed websites for a number of local companies.

I’m really enjoying living in tauranga, it’s really beautiful. my home in tauranga is really awesome. it’s me and other students, ten of us together. It’s like a big family. my most memorable experience has been the Student Ball last semester.

Other costs and general advicestudents should budget for between NZ$150 – NZ$250 per week in addition to rent or homestay accommodation expenses. Expenses may vary depending on personal spending habits. Flatting is usually more expensive than homestay and you may need to budget carefully to meet all expenses.

this is the leasing/renting of a house or apartment of your own or, more commonly, with other students. If you choose this option, you can request temporary accommodation for a few days until you find a flat or house to live in. Student Worx, local newspapers and real estate agencies publish lists of flats and houses available for rent. It is easier to look for housing after you arrive in tauranga.

bond (Key Money)a bond is an initial payment required for security by landlords when offering their premises for rental. Bonds are refunded at the end of your tenancy if accounts are paid in full and the flat or house is well maintained. Landlords can request a bond equivalent to 1-4 weeks rent. Extra fees that can be added to the bond payment include two weeks rent in advance or/and a real estate agent’s fee that is usually equivalent to one week’s rent. in new Zealand, the bond is not held by the landlord, but is deposited in trust with the new Zealand tenancy Board.

Costs for Flattingthe costs for flatting can range from approximately NZ$80 - $160 per week plus expenses such as food, power, water, telephone, Internet, etc.

FurnitureYou should check whether the flat is fully furnished (e.g. with a bed, fridge, washing machine), semi-furnished or unfurnished. most houses for rent in New Zealand are unfurnished, but there are plenty of ways to buy affordable, quality second-hand items. in most houses for rent you will need to provide your own bedroom furniture including bed, linen, chest of drawers, desk, etc.

Household Appliancesmost houses for rent do not provide whiteware (fridge, washing machine, etc). You need to decide if you want to rent these items or if individual flat mates will provide them. there are many companies in tauranga that lease whiteware at an affordable price.

Understanding the nz education SystemEach programme offered by education institutions in New Zealand is classified by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) at a level between 1 and 10. A higher level indicates a more complex and demanding programme and higher entry requirements.

graduate Diploma Computing, Level 7I attended an education fair in India and met with BoPP staff who helped me finalise a course of study. I came with a Bsc degree from india and opted to do the Graduate Diploma at BoPP as i’ve been studying computers since high school and wanted more it knowledge.

tauranga is a very centrally located city with good work options. Being an international student at BoPP has been a good experience. the environment for support and the teaching staff are very strong. Staff are very patient with international students, giving us their complete time. the tutors and the good friends I have made are like a family. We are a good group and enjoy ourselves. i now have the role of international student mentor.

international students know me and i know them personally and if they have any issues they can talk to me. BoPP also has a platform on which i was able to present my Cv to companies. i am now working part-time in the it sales department at Harvey norman (a large home furnishings store) while i am studying.

My most memorable experience was celebrating the Indian divali festival of light ”kiwi-style.” It was encouraged by the International office and the It department. It was a good celebration, a really religious festival with food, music and dancing. Everyone came, everyone enjoyed it, even the tutors. It was a beautiful experience for me.

i am enjoying living in tauranga very much. it’s a beautiful place to study. i especially love the beach, and nearby Mount Maunganui. tauranga is also one of the warmest cities in New Zealand.

english LanguageWe welcome applications from students with English as a second language. English is the most common language spoken in New Zealand, one of the two official languages (Te Reo Maori is the other); therefore, English language proficiency is required entry criteria for all programmes at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. Different level programmes require different levels of English language proficiency.

the aim of this programme is to provide you with an opportunity to increase your literacy, language and numeracy competence so that you can achieve your goals and support your application into the programme of your choice. You’ll take a range of courses focusing on reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking, problem solving, numeracy skills and communication technology. the programme also includes field trips and you might spend some time in mainstream and vocational class rooms. in some cases you may be able to complete mainstream assessments and earn credits towards certain qualifications.

I’m just here for a year, with the whole family. As a family project we wanted to go abroad for a year to an english speaking country where we all learn english. i've been teaching for a while and i'd like to do

something else, then get a new job when I get home, so I am studying computing and It at BoPP. My wife is studying as well.

When we chose to come to BoPP we looked for somewhere where our kids could go to school, where I could study computing and that had nice weather. We love outdoor activities, so tauranga was

where we ended up. We love the location, the ocean and the beach. It’s great. the course at BoPP is good. i like the infrastructure and the reception by the locals was very nice.

Tertiary JargonCertificateCertificates are qualifications at Levels 1 to 4, with at least 40 credits. they can be between 12 weeks to a full-year in length and can pathway into diploma programmes. Most trades and service jobs require certificates at Levels 3 or 4.

Degree‘Bachelor’ degrees are qualifications at Level 7. they usually take three to four years full-time study to complete and can lead to further study at masters or Doctorate levels.

diplomadiplomas are qualifications at Levels 5 and 6, requiring at least 120 credits. they are between one and two years in length and may pathway into degree programmes.

entry requirementseach programme has entry criteria you must meet. these may be academic requirements or work experience. “High School” is mandatory for entry into any Bay of Plenty Polytechnic programme for international students.

For many programmes mature students with life skills and/or work experience are encouraged to apply, even if you do not meet the academic entry requirements but have the equivalent ability and experience.

MajorCertain diplomas or degrees allow you to select a major subject to study. for example, the diploma in tourism offers majors in international flight attending, travel management and event management. since you’ll be studying this subject a while and changing majors is not easy, make sure to choose one you enjoy, are good at and possibly want to pursue for a career.

New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)the New Zealand Qualifications authority (nZQa) is a government agency responsible for setting, reviewing and monitoring education qualifications in New Zealand to meet internationally recognised standards. nZQa recognises Bay of Plenty Polytechnic as an accredited provider of qualifications from certificates to degrees, Levels 1 to 7.

Pathwayat Bay of Plenty Polytechnic you can enter a programme of study at a level that suits your previous qualifications or work skills and life experience. You may have the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to enter directly into a programme, or you may need to start at a lower level or complete a bridging programme. many of our programmes pathway into further study options either at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic or at other leading national or international tertiary education providers.

Polytechnics and Institutes of TechnologyPolytechnics and institutes of technology are the same kind of institution. they deliver technical, vocational and professional certificate, diploma and degree programmes, often including significant practical experience.

ProgrammesA programme is made up of courses, papers or units of study that lead to a qualification. Some programmes require successful completion of compulsory subjects while others offer elective subjects.

USE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION COLLECTEDintending students are advised that the information sought on the forms for enrolment is required to enable the Polytechnic to comply with its purposes and functions under the Education Act 1989. the information will be held by the Polytechnic and used in the following ways:

1. Within the Polytechnic relevant personal information from a student’s enrolment form will be available to those members of the Polytechnic staff responsible for: 1.1. the student’s enrolment at the Polytechnic, establishing and maintaining the student’s records 1.2. Providing tuition, appropriate academic advice and support 1.3. Providing student services 1.4. Maintaining order and discipline.

2. the Polytechnic is also required by certain statutes to provide some personal information to some other agencies. the agencies that may require the Polytechnic to provide this information include: 2.1. ministry of education 2.2. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2.3. Work and income new Zealand 2.4. StudyLink 2.5. inland revenue Department 2.6. department of Immigration 2.7. Agencies who support particular students through scholarships, prizes, payment of fees and other awards.

3. information about particular students may be supplied to the following agencies in the circumstances detailed: 3.1. new Zealand vice Chancellor’s Committee Placement services and the ministry of External Relations and trade where the student concerned is an international student studying at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and is funded by the ministry 3.2. other educational institutions where the student concerned is transferring his or her records to another institution.

4. the information may from time to time be used to advise details of other education/ training related services and products.

FAILURE TO SUPPLY INFORMATIONStudents are advised that failure to supply the information requested by the Polytechnic, or the supply of incomplete or false information may result in the Polytechnic declining or cancelling the enrolment.

FALSE OR MISLEADING INFORMATIONIf you supply information to the Polytechnic that is found to be misleading or false, the Polytechnic’s will review your enrolment. Bay of Plenty Polytechnic may also take appropriate legal action.

HOLDING OF PERSONAL INFORMATIONthe personal information you supply will be held permanently within Bay of Plenty Polytechnic record system. While you are enrolled at the Polytechnic you will be asked to annually update any information that has been changed.

Withdrawal / refund of feessee www.boppoly.ac.nz for current international fees and withdrawal / refund policy.

When you sign the student Detail and enrolment form you are signing a legally binding agreement. if you then choose not to go ahead with your programme of study, you must advise of your withdrawal in writing to the appropriate Head of School. Fees will be charged as detailed below.

When requesting a refund of fees, or fees to be written off, the reasons for withdrawal must be stated and accompanied by supporting documentation e.g. medical certificate, statutory declaration etc.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic will only refund/write off fees in the following circumstances:

1. Where the programme of study is cancelled by the Polytechnic, the full fee shall be refunded/written off.

2. for full-time programmes (twelve (12) weeks or more) where written notice of the student’s intention to withdraw is received:

a. up to programme commencement, all tuition fees paid, less an administration charge of $100, will be refunded. In the event of a student not having paid a deposit or fee, a $100 administration charge will apply.

b. up to two (2) weeks after programme commencement, all tuition fees paid, less an administration charge of $200, will be refunded. In the event of a student not having paid a deposit or fee, $200 will be charged plus, where appropriate, a charge for consumables and/or costs incurred.

c. other than in extenuating and exceptional circumstances, there will be no refunds for notifications received after two (2) weeks of programme commencement. In the event of a student not having paid a deposit or the full fee, the full programme fee will be charged.

3. for part-time programmes (including all programmes greater than one (1) week or more) where written notice of the student’s intention to withdraw is received:

a. up to programme commencement, all tuition fees paid, less an administration charge of $50, will be refunded. In the event of a student not having paid the fee, a $50 administration charge will apply.

b. up to two (2) weeks after programme commencement, all tuition fees, less an administration charge of $100, will be refunded. In the event of a student not having paid the fee, a $100 administration charge will apply plus, where appropriate, a charge for consumables and/or cost incurred.

c. other than in extenuating and exceptional circumstances, there will be no refunds for part-time programmes for notifications received after two (2) weeks of programme commencement. In the event of a student not having paid the fee, the full programme fee will be charged.

4. Withdrawal from short courses of less than one (1) week where written, e-tXt or telephone notification is received:

a. Seven (7) calendar days or more prior to commencement, all tuition fees shall be refunded. In the event of a student not having paid the fee, no further action will be taken.

b. For employers sending one or more staff member to a short course, a substitute person may be sent up to and including the first day of the course without incurring an additional fee if the original person enrolled can no longer attend.

c. other than extenuating circumstances, there will be no refund for notifications received less than seven (7) calendar days prior to the short course or after commencement.

5. Where through exceptional and extenuating circumstances a student can no longer complete the programme of study, the amount to be refunded/written off shall be determined by the appropriate Head of School, but shall not exceed the unconsumed portion of the fee less an administration charge. Examples of extenuating circumstances include serious illness or disability of the student, death of a student or close family member. Final acceptance/rejection of an application for a refund/write off of fees will be at the discretion of the Director academic.

CHARGES Bay of Plenty Polytechnic will charge late payment and debt collection charges on all unpaid accounts.

English Language RequirementsBay of Plenty Polytechnic teaches in english and students require competence in this language to be admitted to this Polytechnic and to be successful in their studies.

Students with qualifications from countries such as Bahrain, Canada, Cook Islands, Fiji, Ghana, kiribati, Marshall Islands, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Singapore, Soloman Islands, South Africa, Sweden, tonga, uSA, and Vanuatu would usually indicate that English is their first language or that English was the language of previous study. Please note that applicants who have studied in some countries in which english is the language of instruction may still be required to provide evidence of proficiency in English language and are considered on a case by case basis.

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide satisfactory evidence of English language proficiency, generally in the form of an IELtS or toEFL. Scores can vary according to the qualification sought. In some cases the IELtS or toEFL requirement may be waived where English was the language of instruction in the last two years of secondary / tertiary studies. students need to provide evidence of this at the time of application.

If English is not your first language, evidence of language competency may be required prior to acceptance.
