We explore the lush mangrove forests ofLangkawi, which afford birders excellent opportunities to spot rare avian species, and snorkelamong kaleidoscopic corals in the translucent waters of ailands Similan Islands.

    Burmas temple complexes defy the imagination and we are thrilled to explore both Rangoonand the enchanting interior city of Pagan. Spend two days in the Andaman Islands, wherewe investigate historic Port Blair, discover an incredible diversity of birds and botanicals onguided hikes, and revel in a dramatic seascape of turquoise lagoons, colorful coral gardens,and bountiful marine life.

    Thursday, January 27pAGANAter an early breakast we y to the ancientcapital o Pagan, its 2,000 pagodas, temples,

    and monasteries making this one o the worldsmost enchanting places. We begin our explora-tion with a stunning view over the city romone o the temples then visit the lively NyaungOo daily produce market. Te ShwezigonPagoda, Pagans largest and most veneratedreliquary shrine, is distinguished by its huge,gold bell-shaped stupa. At one o Pagansmonasteries we are honored to participate

    in a Food Donation CeremonyBuddhistmonks eat twice daily, early morning andmid-morning, and rely solely on the generosityo the community. A tour o the monasterygives us the chance to witness the rituals odaily monk lie.

    Ater lunch we visit a workshop or a lacquerware demonstration. Our temple exploration

    Share Policy: Accommodations on all ZE programs are basedon double occupancy. I you are traveling alone and wish to share

    accommodations, a roommate will be assigned to you wheneverpossible. When pairing roommates, we will always pair participants

    o the same sex. All shared accommodations are nonsmoking. I it

    is not possible to pair you with a roommate, you may be asked to

    pay a single supplement or the land portion o the program. For

    tours booked with Eco-Expeditions only: upon booking you will be

    required to pay a Single Supplement, i we are able to pair you with

    a roommate the supplement will be reunded. Please note that single

    accommodations are limited and cannot be guaranteed throughout.

    Medical Information: Participation in a ZE program requires thatyou be in generally good health. It is essential that persons with

    any medical problems and related dietary restrictions make them

    known to us well beore departure. We can counsel you on whether

    the exped ition you have selected is appropriate or you. Te tour

    leader has the right to disqualiy any participant at any time during

    the tour i he or she eels the participant is physically incapable and/

    or i a participants continued participation will jeopardize either

    For most activities, a relatively moderate level o exertion is required. You will need to climb intoand out o Zodiacs and tenders or snorkeling activities and nature walks. You must be able to

    walk moderate distances along beaches and sometimes on rough terrain. Expect high humiditythroughout this itinerary with temperatures ranging rom the low 70s to the high 80sF,with the possibility o some days reaching the low 90sF. ravel to this part o world requiressensitivity to local cultures and customs. While visiting Muslim countries, women will not beexpected to cover their heads, though they should be prepared to wear long sleeves and longpants or skirts, and you will be expected to remove your shoes when visiting some sites (temples,mosques, etc.).     Mike Messick (Expedition Leader) One o the best expedition leaders in the business, Mikeembarked on a ull-time career in adventure travel shortly ater graduation and has since visitedmore than 170 countries around the world.     Fishes o the Galpagos Islands, and he received his Ph.D. rom Pacic Western University. Anavid scuba diver, certied dive master, and Fellow o Te Explorers Club, Jack has led numerousexpeditions to the remote corners o the world.

    Jonathan Rossouw Jonathan is a medical doctor by proession; however, his lielong interest inwildlie has resulted in extensive travels throughout the world. He is the author o the acclaimedWhere to Watch Birds in Uganda and birding site guides to Southern Arica and Madagascar. Heis equally enthusiastic about mammals and coral ree shes as he is with his specialties, birds andreptiles. Jonathan is a director o Zegrahm Expeditions; he leads travelers on expeditions to allseven continents and requently scouts new destinations.

    Kevin Clement Although his specialty is subarctic ecology, Kevins work as a naturalist andadventure travel guide has taken him rom his home in Alaska to all seven continents. He hasworked in several national parks and has guided groups in whitewater rats, sea kayaks, and onoot. Kevin is a director o Zegrahm Expeditions and he holds certications in scuba diving,switwater rescue, and wilderness medicine, as well as a Coast Guard Masters license.

    Shirley Campbell Shirley is an anthropologist specializing in the indigenous peoples oAustralia and Papua New Guinea. She holds degrees rom Stephens College, Missouri and the

    Australian National University in Canberra, and is currently a research ellow at the AustralianNational University. Shirley has specialized in the anthropology o art, convinced that by under-standing the way people represent their ideas through art, a valuable insight into how people livetheir cultures and how they perceive the world around them can be revealed.

    Scott Pearson (Stanford Faculty Leader) - Scott has been studying economic change in devel-oping countries or more than our decades, and is an internationally renowned specialist on thedevelopment o Tird World countries. Ater graduating rom the University o Wisconsin, hejoined the Peace Corps and taught or two years in Nigeria. He then earned an M.A. in inter-national relations at Johns Hopkins and a Ph.D. in economics at Harvard. He taught economicdevelopment and international trade in the Food Research Institute at Stanord University.Scott retired rom teaching in 2002 to begin a new career as a lecturer on expeditions, includingrecent explorations o Asia, North America, the Arctic, and the Antarctic.

    Ron Wixman - Ron has studied World cultures or the past 35 years. His interests are quiteeclectic and span issues ranging rom the early domestication o plants and animals to the riseo agriculture and civilization, religion past and present, the rise and spread o Christianityand Islam, and 19th and 20th century geo-politics. At home in Oregon, Ron is not only a wellknown proessor at the University o Oregon, but he is also a regular commentator on radio and

    television on current events.
