Lyttelton residents are planning to take class action against the Earth-quake Commission over their re-taining wall issues.

They will challenge EQC’s rules in the hopes for a law change – and a payout.

An expert in public law, Dr Mat-thew Palmer QC, says they are likely to be successful.

“I do think there is a good argu-ment there. EQC thinks they can pay less than the replacement cost.”

The group, represented by GCA Lawyers, will challenge this notion.

Lawyer Laura McLoughlin-Ware said she is prepared to go ahead with the case pretty quickly.

Evading the Russian mafia in a casino in Prague, working in the Buller mines and sleeping in a he-licopter in the Nevada desert are all part of George Culvert’s new biography.

The Heathcote businessman has turned a memoir for his grandchil-dren into a book, with help from friend and author Paul Corliss.

“He’s done a really good job of it,” Mr Calvert said. “It’s a good read I tell ya.”

Called The Boy from Ngakawau: Half an Hour at High School, the book traces Mr Calvert’s path from his boyhood on the West

Coast to a successful businessman in Christchurch.

It recounts his experiences as a Malaysian war veteran, sitting ring-side as Mike Tyson bit a chunk off Evander Holyfield’s ear, and being the first Cantabrian to completely rebuild a quake-devastated pub.

It culminates with a ‘Heathcote Valley resident, cigar-smoking millionaire with his rough and abrasive coal-stained Ngākawau edges all still delightfully intact.’

Mr Corliss said that the narra-tive has enough “Backblocks-Kiwi tenacity, overcome-the-odds suc-cess and rough-edged charm and

magic to more than warrant its recording.”

Copies are available for sale at TakeNote Ferrymead, over the bar at the Heathcote Valley Inn or email the author [email protected]  for $35 plus $5.50 post-age.

If you would like to win a copy, the Bay Harbour News has four to give away.

Biography of Heathcote businessman

•From page 1“There has been a pretty good response so far, and there are more to come through.”

She said the issues particularly re-lated to Port Hills properties, including Lyttelton.

“A lot of people in Lyttelton have ex-pressed interest and there are certainly a lot of walls there.”

An EQC spokesperson wouldn’t comment on the class action as it is still in the formative stages.

The issue with wall repair and rebuild costs is two-fold: The value of EQC land settlements, and that retaining walls perceived to be public, may now be pri-vate.

Many of Lyttelton’s retaining walls were built by prison labour in the ear-ly 1900s, and need to be extensively strengthened or replaced.

They have been the city council’s responsibility for 150 years, but post-quake some were deemed private prop-erty.

In many cases, the land settlement from EQC might be tens of thousands of dollars less than the actual cost of re-placing the wall.

Mrs McLaughlin-Ware said the EQC’S interpretation of what they are liable for is the foundation of the issue.

“It needs to be tested in court.”Dr Palmer said that although a legal

ruling in court would assist everyone, affected property owners would be wise to get in on the court case.

An old idea to put a bridge from Sumner to Southshore has resurfaced – leading to a wave of criticism from both sides of the estuary.

The plan has been posted on a website operated by Eastern Vi-sion, a group of community lead-ers organised by Rev Peter Beck.

It aims to help create a big-pic-ture plan for the eastern suburbs, by compiling ideas for the area and inviting comment on them.

Sumner Community Residents’ Association chairman Darren Wright said this particular idea wouldn’t achieve much.

“I’m not sure that there is a lot of people in Brighton that want to come to Sumner, or people in Sumner that want to go to Brigh-ton,” he said.

“And the cost would be astro-nomical.”

Evo::Space website facilitator Evan Smith said the concept has had high levels of disagree-ment.

“About 58 per cent of feedback is against it, 33 per cent for it and the remainder are neutral.”

Arguments against it are mainly on environmental grounds, es-pecially if the bridge was used by motor vehicles.

“However, there is more support for this if it was limited to a cycle and foot bridge only,” Mr Smith said.

“A lot of people like the idea of linking two prime coastal com-munities.”

Marnie Kent, Sumner Com-munity Resident’s Association

development coordinator said she had not heard anything about it.

“I haven’t had any conversations about it with the community so I can only speak for myself. There are projects of absolute necessity, then there are nice-to-haves. This is a nice-to-have.”

The Evo::Space website is col-lecting people’s comments on a range of ideas for the eastern sub-urbs, and will present these to the

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority.

All of the raw data, feedback and analysis will be compiled into a report for the east as a whole – and in this case – Sumner too.

Anyone can comment on the ideas, no matter where they live in Christchurch – or even New Zealand.

To comment on Eastern Vision’s ideas, go to www.evospace.co.nz

IN BRIEFReport for planningThe Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Com-munity Board has requested that the Stoddart Point Regeneration Ideas Group report be used by the city council to guide plan-ning for the Diamond Harbour town centre. They have recom-mended that the city council begin formal engagement and consultation with the Diamond Harbour community about is-sues highlighted in the Getting to the Point report to enable projects to be considered for the long-term plan.

Master planMain Rd master plan delib-erations continued yesterday. Additional information on intersection, parking and cycle issues was requested at the last meeting. The panel planned to meet and discuss the informa-tion before making a recommen-dation. This will be written up in a final plan and taken to the city council for approval around October.

Road reopensMain Rd reopened between McCormacks Bay Rd and the Redcliffs shops last week, and the detours off Celia St and Beach-ville Rd were removed. The full road closure and detours began about a month ago. Repairs to earthquake-damaged wastewa-ter and stormwater networks in the Redcliffs and McCormacks Bay/Mt Pleasant catchments, followed by repairs to damaged road, is expected to take 18 months to complete.

The future of the combined Heath-cote Valley Community Library and Heathcote Community Centre is in the hands of the people who will use it.

The demolition of the library on Martindales Rd and the centre on Bridle Path Rd began on Monday.

One of the two sites will be home to the new community centre and library.

The final selection is up to the local residents, Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman Sara Templeton said.

“I’m not sure which site the com-munity will choose, but they’ll be given all the information on both

sites and can work through the pros and cons of each before mak-ing a decision.”

The buildings were promptly closed after they were severely damaged by the February 2011 earthquakes.

Fervent community support halted their immediate bulldoz-ing.

The decision to rebuild and com-bine the library and community centre comes after a two-year del-egation by the city council.

That time was spent obtaining insurance money to cover costs for rebuild and demolition.

The location for the new site as well as the design are still up for debate.

The community board will be involved with the approval of the final design, Ms Templeton said.

“The Hagley-Ferrymead Com-munity Board has been delegated the sign-off on the final design by the city council. We are keen to see the final design reflect the needs and values of the community who have been so passionate about sav-ing their library.”

One of the key needs identified by the community is a for a youth- friendly space.

Ms Templeton said the commu-nity board would like to engage young people in the process.

Rebuild dates are yet to be deter-mined.

Community to decide future of new facility

Adrian Te Patu’s return to the North Island has been delayed for a couple of years after he lost the Wanganui District Council by-election.

The Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community Board member planned to return to his home-town if he was voted in on July 19.

But he came sixth out of eight candidates with 626 votes to his name, while local radio person-ality Jason Granville took out the top spot with 5625 votes.

“My run was simply too late,” Mr Te Patu said.

“I should have got out there two weeks before, it would have made a huge difference.”

Instead he intends to keep his various community roles, and fly north in two years’ time for the next Wanganui District Council election.

Mr Te Patu said although he would move to Wanganui if vot-ed in, he will continue working in other parts of the country.

“I would need to go away for work four days a month. But I’m used to it, in the last three weeks I’ve been on 12 flights.”

But he would have to give up his local roles.

Mr Te Patu is serving his sec-ond term on the Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community Board.

He is also a current member of the Diamond Harbour Commu-nity Association and the Health Promotion Forum.

Those visiting Settlers Cres in Fer-rymead can access both ends of the street after SCIRT’s City Care team finished works there recently.

The infrastructure work began in October last year.Over nine months:• 438m of wastewater main was replaced • 158m of wastewater laterals were replaced • One wastewater lift station was installed • Seven wastewater manholes were replaced • 92m of storm water pipe was re-placed • Six storm water manholes were replaced • 906m of kerb and channel was replaced • 5800 sq m of road was replaced • 838 sq m of footpath was re-placed.

Although work is now complete on Settlers Cres, City Care will be around for a while yet working on other projects in the Ferrymead area.

There are some road repairs yet to be completed in Tussock Lane, these are expected to take around a week.

City Care’s site office, based in Tussock Lane, will remain there and people are welcome to drop in if they have any questions about other works happening in the Fer-rymead area.

A Sumner pre-school is running a fundraiser for the local Returned Services Association.

Pebbles Preschool has painted pictures of poppies as part of their learning on Anzac day, and these have been printed onto greeting cards.

The RSA were very pleased with the initiative, pre-school owner Belinda Slade said.

“They said they were so thrilled that the smallest people in the community were the first to help them.”

The cards are on sale at the Pebbles Preschool on Campbell St, $20 for a set of 10.

All profits from the sale of the cards will go to the Sumner-Redcliffs RSA.

BY GARY MANCH, SERGEANT LYTTELTON SUMNER AND BAYS

Well it looks like winter has set in.

We popped over to Port Levy for a patrol and the snow was almost down to Purau, so if you are driving in the bays please take extra care.

Its been a very quiet week for police here, which is great and gives us time to focus on areas where residents tell us there are problems.

Governors Bay Rd is one of these areas, where I am told there is an issue with trucks.

I spent some time there over the past few days, and the trucks were driving responsi-bly.

If you have concerns related to alleged bad driving, you need to report the details to police then we will follow up with the company concerned.

We need the time, date, lo-cation of offence and registra-tion number of the vehicle.

I assure you we will follow up complaints about bad driv-ing as long as we have the in-formation.

As I have mentioned we do need evidence, and the person making the complaint must be prepared to go to court if it comes down to this.

I think it is also fair to point out that the truck drivers are entitled to use the road legally and the fact that some resi-dents do not like them going through the bays is not a rea-

son to complain. The earthquakes have af-

fected a lot of things, and Sumner Rd is one of them. While the road is shut, our trucking companies re-quire a route to get goods to Christchurch that cannot go through the tunnel.

The only way to keep the economy going is sometimes to drive through our bay roads and over Teddington.

Be careful out there and catch up with you next time.

MOTORING

There’s a common misconcep-tion that hybrid vehicles are engineered solely to enhance fuel economy.

While that’s true to a degree, once you start harnessing electric power performance is almost guaranteed.

Lexus (and Toyota) has com-bined the two elements well in its hybrid drive system with low combined cycle fuel usage fig-ures and power that can easily be classed as performance-oriented.

The latest to come my way was the facelifted and upgraded Lexus CT200h, the entry-level model into the Lexus marque. And from $49,995, as in the test car’s case, it is an affordable Lexus for those who want to benefit from the Lexus buying experience along with reaping the benefits of hybrid power.

The CT200h lands here in three grades depending on the level of specification. The test car was without the frills but even then it doesn’t miss out on much. F-Sport and Limited models have flashy trim elements, leather upholstery and satellite navigation, to name a few extras, but the low grade model is the car for me with its warm fabric upholstery and enough kit to keep occupants comfortable.

The CT200h isn’t a large car, at just over 4.3m it is compact, yet its five-door body style lends itself well to those who don’t often have the need for a full five-seater. There are five seats in the CT200h, but there isn’t a huge

amount of space rearwards. That aside, those who do travel in the CT200h will be comfortable, the seat shapes are cosseting and true of the Lexus spirit, ride quality is superb.

Saying that, there is definite firming within the suspension so that its handling prowess is aligned to its sporty dynamics, but there is enough compliance so that bumps and ruts aren’t trans-mitted into the in-cabin area. And that is a true test of suspension in Christchurch at the moment, the big jolts are easily absorbed by the fully independent front strut/rear double wishbone system.

Even though the CT200h drives through the front wheels, there is a dynamism that is the Lexus sporty experience, it is a car which handles well with strong

steering feel and controlled body balance.

Providing the grip are low roll-ing resistance Yokohama tyres (205/55 x 19in); because their profile isn’t low, ride quality isn’t affected, they are responsive and deliver strong feedback to the driver.

The CT200h is relatively light at just over 1400kg, and that con-tributes to the lithe, nimble feel of the car in total. It is sharp in a corner and crisp from beneath the pedals.

Up front sits a 1.8-litre, twin-camshaft engine, it is pretty much the standard hybrid system which sits in Prius and a host of other Toyota and Lexus models. Power is rated at 73kW with an extra 27kW available through electric delivery. But where the perfor-

mance benefits arrive is from the extra torque electric power gener-ates – 40Nm on top of 142Nm.

That’s where the performance aspect comes in, the CT200h feels strong when all elements are com-bining to form acceleration. It will reach 100km/h from a standstill in just under 10sec and will lunge through a highway overtake in 6.8sec.

While these figures don’t repre-sent a fast car, they are mislead-ing, the CT200h feels crisp and energetic and if you add into the equation its wonderful handling feel and strength out of a corner, performance is guaranteed.

On the subject of figures Lexus also claim a 4.1-litre per 100km (69mpg) combined cycle fuel usage average for the CT200h, which was a little distant to the

6l/100km (47mpg) figure on display in the test car, but at 100km/h a 5l/100km (56mpg) fig-ure trickles from the tank.

And if you add in the driver-controlled three-mode drive sys-tem – sport, normal or economy – the CT200h can be driven easily to coincide with driving condi-tions, gleaning maximum econo-my or performance as the driver deems appropriate.

Personally, I preferred normal mode, you can still extract mid-range boost as required without the engine being too lively, taking into account that the drive system is biased towards electric power being the chosen mode of drive.

On that subject, power is trans-ferred through a continuously variable automatic transmission.

In terms of the facelift, not a lot has changed with the CT200h, the changes are part of the ever evolving upgrades which channel through the manufacturer’s design process. Notably, it takes on the new Lexus family look up front with a new grille which makes it very much part of the Lexus look.

Lexus is on a charge with its hybrid programme (no pun intended), in New Zealand there are several Lexus hybrid models across the range to choose from. For those who like the concept, the CT200h is an affordable place to start.

Attracting more cruise ships to the Lyttelton is on the agenda.

The Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Commu-nity Board has updated its objectives, and this is one of them.

New objectives in the 2014-2016 tri-ennium list include:• Facilities for community activities including recreation and sport are re-paired, rebuilt, maintained and well-used by all residents• Acknowledging the challenges and strengths of increasing diversity in the community• Retention, restoration and recovery of natural and cultural heritage• Residents feeling safe from natural hazards in harbour communities• Access to suitable housing for all those who wish to live in the area• Maintaining existing local Govern-ment boundaries and arrangements, reflecting Banks Peninsula’s inherent integrity and particular interests

Encouraging predator-free Port Hills and finalising the Stoddart Point and Coastal Cliff Management Plan were both dropped from the previous list.

The community board is the only one in Christchurch with its own list of ob-jectives.

New goals for port

I see you’ve written a book on well-known Christchurch busi-nessman George Calvert. Was it strange writing about a friend?

I thought it was going to be hard but he’s a ton of a character. The hardest part really was meeting all the miners and drinkers on the West Coast. They are all in their 70s and 80s now but it was embar-rassing, I couldn’t keep up with their drinking. I would have to go back to the hotel for a sleep, and I’d wake up and they’d still be tell-ing stories and lies. They are hard working, tough old buggers.

They must have had some sto-ries to tell.

Yes, I found it very interesting, especially with my union back-ground. And we discovered a lot of old photographs during the writing of the book too, these are a real passion of mine. George had four albums full of pictures of the conflict in Malaysia and Borneo, which had never seen the light of day. It was very exciting.

So what other books do you have on the go?

I have two or three actually, and one due to be released in a month or so. That one is on the Lyttelton Tunnel, since it is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary this year. I have had a lot of support from the city council and private individuals in writing the book. The others are just sitting there – as do many author’s books I suspect – they just need some tarting up and il-lustrations. I have my own com-pany, Purple Grouse Press, that publishes the books. I think people call it a vanity press [laughing]. But there’s no money in it. Because all of the books I have written are very specialist I print just a few. I never publish more than 1000 and some-times as little as 500. I’ve published about 10 books and probably made about $50 from them all.

And you mention that you have been involved in workers’ unions – in what way?

I’ve been involved in unions since I started on the railways in the 70s. I then became the sec-retary of the Lyttelton Harbour workers’ union in 86, and when we amalgamated with rail I led the or-ganisation for 20 years.

Workers’ championPaul Corliss has dedicated much of his life to trade unions and writing books. The Mt Pleasant man speaks to Emma-Jane McLennan about his fishing stories, drinking on the West Coast and his latest biography

Organisers of this year’s Canterbury A&P Show are calling for entries to the event.

It is the country’s largest agricultural and pastoral show.

More than 3000 animals and close to 1000 competitors are expected to com-pete in 1700 classes including sections for horse and pony, beef and dairy cattle, sheep, alpaca, llama, wool, goat, dog tri-als, poultry, shearing and wool handling, wood chopping and vintage machinery. Two more horse and pony sections have been added this year.

Entries are also open for two of the feature competitions – the Mint Lamb Competition where New Zealand’s top lambs are put to a taste test, and the Young Auctioneers Competition where up-and-coming stock agents show off their skills.

Canterbury A&P Association president Richard Parkes said he was confident of a strong exhibitor turnout.

“It’s a testament to the volunteers be-hind the show and the exhibitors, both old and new, that we consistently attract some of the best equestrian and livestock entries that New Zealand has to offer,” he said.

Exhibitors will be competing for more than $100,000 in prize money at the show, which attracts around 100,000 visitors ev-ery year.

This year’s 152nd show will be held at the Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch from November 12 to No-vember 14.

The schedule of classes can be down-loaded at www.theshow.co.nz or by con-tacting the show secretary on 343 3033 or [email protected]. Entries close in late September for most sections.

AND TREATMENT wITH:

I was also the chairman of the Council of Trade Unions Trade Unions in the 1990s. Later on I tried to retire, but now I am the part-time organiser of the Ter-tiary Education Union. I work three days a week at the Canter-bury University and spend the rest of my time writing. I don’t stick to just five days a week, I write nights and weekends, especially in winter with no trout fishing.

Oh, so you enjoy fishing?Yes, I’ve been fly fishing for

40 years. My best fish ever were probably a 28 pound salmon and a 13 pound trout. I’ve got a few friends that like to head out with me to the West Coast, and find a good lake or river to fish in. I also enjoy reading, I’ve probably got eight to nine thousand books at home. I had more before, but after the earthquakes I filled a 3.5 sq m skip with books.

Wow, that is an incredible amount of books! How long have you been writing for, yourself?

I haven’t been writing for that long, probably 15 years. I first started with bibliographies, of all the boring things you could write about. Then the Ihutai Trust commissioned a book on the estuary, the research for that was really interesting.

What other hobbies do you have?

I am the secretary at the Heath-cote Cricket Club. I love cricket – I am useless at it but I watch.

Heathcote is probably the best cricket club in New Zealand. It has just been completely rebuilt, and thanks to some very gener-ous support we have now got a better place than we had before the earthquakes. We had some great support from Sir Richard Hadlee and Aaron Mauger, who came and made some videos of the club to send around the world. The community are lov-ing the facility now.

So do you live in Heathcote? No, I live in Mt Pleasant, but

I’ve always been involved with the Heathcote Cricket Club.

Tell me about your family.I have a son who has left home

now, Sam. My wife, Bette, and I have been married 38 years.

How did your house fare in the earthquakes?

Our house was all good – we were one of the lucky ones and I do feel a bit guilty about that. I counted 11 concrete trucks go-ing up the hill today, so there is definitely a lot of repair work go-ing on.

Have you always lived in Christchurch?

No, I actually grew up in Auckland so I’m a dirty old jaffa

[laughing]. Someone once said, you can’t help where you are born or who your parents are.

Do you have many siblings?Yes, I had five brothers and sis-

ters. I was number two, but my older brother is gone now. We all finished school at 15. My father died when I was eight or nine so I never really had a father. But I had a good Scottish mother who held it together. She’s a tough old lady. I struggled with one child and two parents so I have no idea how she managed to look after five on her own.

What did you do after leaving school?

I worked at the freezing works at 16. I couldn’t even tell you what I did next – I can’t remember – but then I went to Aussie for a while in the 70s. That was a bit of disaster, let’s just say it was youth and temptation, I think they sent me back to New Zealand. I then came to Christchurch and I’ve been here ever since. I worked for 10 years on the railways and then onto the unions. I never re-ally thought I would write, you tend to just walk into things, meet people along the way and suddenly you’re in a new job.

Why did you choose to live in about Christchurch?

Christchurch suited me I think, it’s not too big that it drives you mad and it’s not too small to be claustrophobic. It’s also just a hop, skip and a jump away from the mountains, rivers and sea.

Recycling - a win-win Buying recycled clothing is a great way to fi nd that special one-off item for a fraction of the price, or earn some money from your wardrobe clean out. Recycle Boutique has been open at The Tannery since just before Christmas last year and stocks high quality clothing and accessories for women and men.The beauty of visiting Hayley and the team is that their in-store selection changes all the time so there is always something new to fi nd.

“We introduce around 100 items to the store every day and starting to move into the

lighter styles for spring,” says franchisee Hayley Budd.

Step inside Recycle Boutique and you will be greeted by a wonderful range of clothing for men and women along with shoes, jewellery, handbags and other accessories, all chosen by Hayley to ensure that they are of high quality and in excellent condition.

Hayley says people come in to Recycle Boutique a er clearing out their wardrobes before shi ing homes, o en as a result of the earthquakes, and her business o ers a way for them to at least make some money.

“You can bring your clothes and accessories in and we will choose which ones we can sell on your behalf,” says Hayley. Recycle Boutique takes 50 per cent of the sale price and they can also pass your unsold items on to the local charities they support – Christchurch City Mission and Women’s Refuge. It’s the true meaning of a win-win.

e idea of setting up Recycle Boutique was an opportunity for Hayley to have her own business. She was familiar with the franchise, being a regular customer at the Wellington store. e business is completely

computerised, with a track and trace type system for all their items, and those who have sold their items are paid in cash.

e store’s location at e Tannery is a perfect t for the business, says Hayley, which would not have suited a large suburban mall.

Recycle Boutique is open from 10am until 5pm, seven days a week at e Tannery. Selected pieces are shown each week on their Facebook page, which also provides information about when they will be next accepting new items. Or you can telephone Hayley at Recycle Boutique on 389 5896.

Beautiful jewellery with a

Why are things for women often made by men? It is an interesting question when applied to the world of jewellery. In the modern world, most women hope

to own a beautiful ring (or two!) and often receive jewellery to mark milestone events in their lives. Why,

then, is much of it designed and made by men?

It has long been appreciated that women have an eye for detail and nishing touches. is has translated into a multitude of female fashion

designers in recent decades but not many female jewellery, apart from Filigree, where beautiful designs are manufactured by hand and nished to the highest of standards with de touches contributed by the women in the team.

Vanessa Stowers, the owner of Filigree, is the main designer of all the in-house ranges. She is also a jeweller by trade and is supported in the workshop by two other female jewellers, Georgie and Christina.

is is not to say that their team is not complemented by men. Rahim and Kerry are experts in their elds of stone setting,

master engraving and manufacture of jewellery. Together, they produce items of outstanding beauty and workmanship with more than one person contributing to the nished product of a ring, earrings, necklace or bracelet. In addition, in a world of mass production and importation, Filigree wants to ensure the longevity of the cra smanship of jewellery making with the addition to the workshop of their new apprentice Craig.

Many jewellers advertise handmade jewellery, but many still outsource their work instead of having an on-site workshop. So what are the advantages of having experts as an intrinsic part of the team? When a piece of jewellery is designed, it is vital that the designer has a working knowledge of metalworking. is ensures that not only

does the nished piece look good, it will also stand the test of time without breakage or weakness.

At Filigree, Vanessa is an expert at this as she can understand how a piece will be made, and compromises will not have to be made during the manufacturing process. Her design ethic of handcra ed and designed modern pieces with a classic overtone falls in line with the achievable ideal that we can

all own an item of beauty that will be loved by generations to come – good design never goes out of fashion.

Experience the a ordable luxury that Filigree o ers with made-to-order jewellery you can’t get anywhere else. Women have always been the holders of good taste and impeccable style. You can nd your own signature piece of gold, silver or platinum at Filigree.

BY KYLE KNOWLES

Ferrymead Bays Football Club is pushing ahead with plans to install floodlights at its home turf after receiving city council approv-al last week.

The club will build six 13m-high light tow-ers on one of its three pitches at Barnett Park and expects them to be up by November.

Club president Gerard Cleary would not say how much the lights would cost the club while the tender process was live, but con-firmed they came with a significant price tag.

He said the lights would turn the field into a “world-class facility” and provide “a once in a life time opportunity to have a high-quality practise facility”.

Mr Cleary said lights were essential for at-tracting more volunteer coaches and players, as training sessions were currently restricted to daylight hours when most people were working.

The floodlights would be turned on only during the autumn and winter months, and their use would be restricted to four nights a week between the hours of 4.30pm and 9pm.

The club had the option to extend use one night a week to 9.30pm for matches.

The light towers must also be painted khaki green to fit in with their surroundings.

Ferrymead-Brookhaven Residents Asso-ciation member Dave Stringer said the plans were “definitely” a positive for the Ferrymead area and would give the club and wider com-

munity better access to the field at night.Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board

deputy chairman Joe Davies said consulta-tion had thrown up no major issues.

The city council is also upgrading the turf at Barnett Park in preparation for the city’s hosting of four teams for the FIFA U20 World Cup next year.

Mr Cleary said the FIFA tournament had provided a unique opportunity to upgrade the grounds, which the club could not have done on its own.

Fields at Avonhead Park, Garrick Park and Linfield Park will also be upgraded in preparation for the tournament, and Main-land Football will be installing floodlights at Avonhead Park as well.

FERRYMEAD BAYS FOOTBALL CLUB REPORT

• Junior clubFerrymead Bays’ 13th grade A

team, coached by Chris Murphy, the Bays’ premier men’s captain, travelled to Canberra in the first week of the school holidays to compete in the Kanga Cup.

The tournament involved 278 teams, mostly from around Aus-tralia.

The Ferrymead Bays team played a total of six games and performed very well to end up with three wins, two draws and one loss, which was good enough to finish seventh out of 12 teams in their age group. Their statistics were an impressive 16 goals for and five 5 goals against across the six games.

They also practised a haka before leaving and performed this in the opening ceremony of the tourna-ment in front of more than 3000 people. They were asked to per-form this several more times dur-ing the tournament.

The team raised funds for their trip in many different ways. Some of these were club barbecues, a Sumner theatre night, a quiz night at Ferrymead Speight’s Ale House and a sponsored walk from Akaroa hilltop to Diamond Harbour.

The club intends to continue sending 13th grade boys’ teams to future Kanga Cup tournaments as

it believes it gives them valuable experience and an opportunity to develop as better players. All in all, it was a great experience for every-one involved and the club would like to thank all those who helped with the fundraising efforts.

• Senior clubOn Saturday our Mainland Pre-

mier League team played former league winners Nelson Suburbs at English Park.

Nelson had beaten our boys 4-0 in Nelson earlier in the season so a tough match was expected.

Nelson were coming off a 6-2

humbling by Coastal Spirit the pre-vious Saturday, so the Bays were wary of an improved performance.

However, Nelson probably weren’t banking on Bays’ golden boot candidate and Canterbury United player Michael White wag-ing a one-man vendetta and bag-ging four goals in a 5-1 Bays vic-tory.

Richard Astley scored the first goal early in the game to steady the team’s nerves a little.

White scored some sublime goals and rightfully took all the plaudits for his performance but mention must also go to the whole team

who worked hard and totally dom-inated the game from the start.

This result is all the more re-markable when you consider the Bays were reduced to 10 men after 15 minutes.

This win lifts Bays above Nelson into third on the table.

With six weeks of the season still to play further improvement is possible.

Our division 2 team also had a convincing win at the weekend at Barnett Park.

They were playing Christchurch United in the cup and had previ-ously been beaten 2-1 by them in the league.

This time around the Bays team were on top form and determined to get the win that would edge them closer to the cup final and an opportunity to defend their trophy from last season.

Bays started their scoring around the 15 minute mark and added a second on 30 minutes to lead 2-0 at half-time.

Five minutes into the second half the Bays were 4-0 up which effec-tively killed the game as a contest.

A fifth goal was added towards the end to give the Bays a comfort-able 5-0 victory and lift them to the top of their pool, meaning that just one point from their last game of the pool next week will ensure a cup final place.

– Erna Rogers and Neil Murphy

The July holiday period saw the South Island and Canterbury cross country championships, run in opposite conditions on consecutive weekends.

The South Island champion-ships were held at QE II on the village green, in blustery but dry conditions.

This is the only race of the sea-son with hurdles and always pro-duces a variety of unique styles from the runners.

Blake Theobald (boys 10) and Karen Muller (masters women) claimed championship gold’s while Sofia Kennedy (girls 14), John Wells (boys 11), Sam Clark (boys 10) and Chris Rowe (mas-ters) won bronze. Other individ-

uals with top finishes were Da-vid Fitch (MM35) and Graham Batchelor (MM65). The Masters Women’s team (Karen Muller, Chris Rowe, Rachel Clark, Ann Wells) finished second in the teams event, two points behind Port Hills.

The Canterbury championships at Halswell Quarry on July 19 were quite a different story.

With the cold snap in full force and rain predicted, the runners braced themselves for a slippery and muddy course. They were not disappointed, with rain pro-ducing true cross country condi-tions.

Staying upright in parts of the

course was a real challenge.No-one escaped the mud and

water and everyone finished looking liked they had competed in the “mud-run.”

Again, Blake Theobald and Karen Muller were stand outs in their races taking out champion-ship titles – Blake in the boy’s 9/10 and Karen in Master wom-en’s 40-49. Jess Fahey turned in a great run to claim bronze and her first podium finish. Other top age group finishers were Dave Fitch (first MM35), Gra-ham Batchelor (first MM65), Chris Rowe (third MW45), John Wells (second B11) and Beth Hunter (third G11).

With the season half over, run-

ners are now looking towards the national championships on August 9 and the Canterbury road championships on August 23.

Following those, the club heads towards the second Boulder Bay Classic on November 2, starting at Taylors Mistake.

This 10km run is held over an undulating course and offers a challenging yet achievable run for both experienced and novice runners.

The club is well underway in its planning for this event and has now cemented a 10-year concession from the council to hold it.

TOYOTA COROLLAS are the most popular cars in Christch-urch.

There are 13,486 of them on our roads, and Olivia Arthur is driving one of them.

The Lincoln University stu-dent said the car is easy to use and good on petrol.

“I probably spend about $40 on fuel a week, and sometimes I will drive to Christchurch or Timaru on the weekend.”

Matthew Downing, sales man-ager at Miles and Ilam Toyota,

said the Corolla is a top seller because of it’s versatility.

“It’s medium-sized, good for a first or second car, young or old. It has quite wide appeal,” he said.

It is also the most popular car in the world, with more than 40 million sold since they were first made.

In Christchurch, the Corolla is followed by the Subaru Legacy at no 2.

Toyota itself is the third most trusted of all brands in New Zea-land – behind Whittaker’s and Dettol – according to a Reader’s

Digest survey. The Japanese car brand has

three models in the top 10 list of registered cars in Christchurch – Corolla, RAV4 and Camry.

In the greater Canterbury re-gion the same two cars are the most popular, followed by the re-maining eight in different order.

The most dramatic change was to the Ford Falcon, which made no 8 in Christchurch but jumped to third place in Canterbury.

There is a higher percentage of Nissan Primeras in Canterbury than Christchurch, and less Sub-aru Imprezas.

Try baking for goodness’ sakeThe Big Fair Bake is back. Running from August 1 to 17, the event is a collaboration between Fairtrade and Trade Aid with the aim of improving lives of disadvantaged farmers and workers simply by encouraging Kiwis to choose fair when it comes to baking ingredients.

Aspiring bakers need to select at least two fair trade ingredients—an ingredient carrying the Fairtrade mark and an ingredient from Trade Aid— and use these to create or adapt an inspiring recipe. You then need to photograph and share your recipe on www.bigfairbake.org.nz

There are lots of delicious ingredients to choose from, most of which are found in the supermarket aisle or in Trade Aid stores and online. These include everything from chocolate and bananas to cocoa and dates.

Top prizes are up from grabs for the winning recipes including a KitchenAid, a master class with award-winning restaurant Logan Brown’s pastry chef, and plenty of Fair Trade and Milly’s baking hampers. Judging the competition this year are chefs Steve Logan, Kim Evans and Julie Le Clerc.

Le Clerc shares one of her Fair Trade recipes.

FAIR TRADE DARK CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE TORTE This very special dessert cake contains a double helping of Fairtrade Dark Ghana chocolate, for good measure. Bound with ground hazelnuts or almonds from Trade Aid, this torte is also flourless, so it makes a delectable gluten-free pudding option as well.

INGREDIENTS 150g Fairtrade chocolate, coarsely chopped eg Whittaker’s Dark Ghana 72 per cent or Green & Black’s 70 per cent 100ml strong brew fair trade coffee 150g unsalted butter, softened 75g caster sugar 4 large free-range eggs, separated 1 tsp Fairtrade pure vanilla extract 150g Trade Aid ground almonds or toasted

hazelnuts 12 toasted hazelnuts, reserved for decoration 50g Whittaker’s Dark Ghana 72 per cent Fairtrade chocolate, grated, to decorate Chocolate mousse: 150g Whittaker’s Dark Ghana 72 per cent Fairtrade chocolate, coarsely chopped 30g unsalted butter, cubed 4 large free-range eggs, separated METHOD

For the cake, preheat oven to 170 deg C. Grease a 22cm spring form cake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper.

Place the chocolate and coffee in a bowl set over a saucepan one-quarter full of simmering water to melt. Or microwave in short bursts. Stir until smooth then set aside. Place butter and sugar in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer until pale and creamy.

Add vanilla and egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the chocolate mixture and then stir in the ground hazelnuts.

In a clean bowl, whisk egg whites until stiff peaks form.

Use a large metal spoon to fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture in two additions. Pour mixture into prepared tin and smooth the surface. Bake for 40 minutes or until an inserted skewer comes out clean. Remove, cool in the tin.

For the mousse, place chocolate and butter in a bowl set over a saucepan one-quarter full of simmering water to melt. Or microwave in short bursts. Stir until smooth. Add egg yolks, one at a time, stirring to combine. In a clean bowl, whisk egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold egg whites into the chocolate mixture in two additions. The mixture may appear to split but keep folding and it will come together.

To assemble, pour the mousse onto the cooled cake while it is still in the tin. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.

To serve, release the spring. Use a small knife to help ease the paper away from the cake. Peel off the paper and discard. Use a hot knife to cut the torte into wedges. Decorate with reserved hazelnuts and grated chocolate.

Wanted To BuyPursuant to Regulation 17 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, Te Hapu o Ngati Wheke (Rapaki) Runanga has applied to the Minister for Primary Industries for a mataitai reserve for the fisheries waters of Lyttelton Harbour inside a line extending from the eastern extremity of Otokitoki/Gollans Bay to the eastern extremity of Deep Gully Bay and excluding the Rapaki Mataitai Reserve and the Lyttelton Port.

A mataitai reserve is an identified traditional fishing ground in fisheries waters established for the purpose of customary food gathering.

Te Hapu o Ngati Wheke (Rapaki) Runanga and the Ministry for Primary Industries have previously consulted with the local community on the application.

Te Hapu o Ngati Wheke (Rapaki) Runanga have amended the boundary of the proposed reserve to exclude the Diamond Harbour Wharf and immediate surrounds.

Pursuant to Regulation 19(5) this notice outlines the details of the application and invites written submissions about the fish stocks in the area specified in the application from persons who take fish, aquatic life, or seaweed or own quota, and whose ability to take such fish, aquatic life, or seaweed or whose ownership interest in quota may be affected by the proposed mataitai reserve.

Written submissions must be made by Monday, 18 August 2014 to: Fisheries Management - Spatial Allocations, Ministry for Primary Industries, PO Box 2526, Wellington 6140, or by email to [email protected]

Further information about mataitai reserves, including a map of this proposed mataitai reserve, is available on the MPI website (www.mpi.govt.nz), or by contacting MPI at the above address.

Note: All submissions are subject to the Official Information Act 1982 (“the OIA”) and can be released, if requested. If you have specific reasons for wanting to have your submission withheld, please set out your reasons in the submission. MPI will consider those reasons when making any assessment for release of submissions if requested under the OIA.
