A dateby thelake

A dateby thelake

A dateby thelake

Its body mass is signifi cant. It’s styling both exterior and

interior is impressive. Getting behind the wheel for the fi rst time was like going on a super

special date with someone you wanted to impress.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.0 is inspiring and imposing.

This machine has power – in many senses. It’s an understated version of power. The kind that doesn’t yell at you for attention, it’s more about alluding to what ‘it’ already knows – that says I don’t need to fl aunt and be fl ashy because I’ve worked hard and I deserve this.

And once I showed due respect, this vehicle became my Genie. Then I was the one that felt the thrill of what this stunning vehicle could allow me to do, have, be and go beyond. It seemed like the whole of the country could open up and I could enjoy it with a feeling of safety and protection. Yes, I have to admit, I really felt like this vehicle

and I were on the same team and it had my back.

After collecting the Grand Cherokee from Farmer Auto Village, I drove around town just to get the feel of navigating such a big vehicle from quite a high sitting position. I felt a sense of control knowing I had superior all round visibility not only from my own view but from the technical gear on board, such as the high tech reversing camera display – taking away the guess work, and making reversing a dream.

Off and off roadSo, where can I take this beast to

try out this vehicle’s standing as one of New Zealand’s stand out luxury low range all wheel drive vehicle?

Time didn’t permit me to go seriously off road but I did head up to McLaren Falls Park and weave and wind around the undulating dirt roads. Again, having the advantage of height was nice, and I was aware of the vehicle’s size and hoped like hell I didn’t have to meet any oncoming cars!

It was at this point when I realised ‘the date’ was going well and unconsciously, I started to relax more. Handling was effortless, the vehicle responded to my unspoken instructions, and I just knew, the more time we had together, the better it was going to get. Truly, I was starting to fall in love.

And apparently, so are a lot of people in the Bay. Sales

fi gures are up. For the last four years, the Jeep range is seeing a steady increase in popularity. So who is buying them and why?

The main buyer profi le is the 40 plus male, who has worked hard in his career and got enough where with all behind him to enjoy this type of vehicle. Be they contractors, orchardists, farmers, accountants, lawyers or company owners. Driving this vehicle says you are successful but without being fl ashy or pretentious. Beneath that, is the machinery and technology to do serious work; on and off the road.

Lady luxuryThe historical Jeep look was

angular and hard, which is not surprising when considering its WWII heritage. Now that Italian company Fiat owns the Jeep manufacturing business, the new lines are softer and more elegant.

Local buyers are choosing Jeep vehicles time after time – getting a luxury all-wheel-drive that looks the business when you meet for business, able to tow 3.5 tonnes of material loads during work time, or handle taking off for adventures with serious recreational gear hooked to the tow bar.

Luxury is not lacking. The seats are perfectly formed leather with white contrast stitching detail. The dash board and interior console are well designed and easy to use.

And there’s oh so much room inside. Swivel your head around from in the driver’s seat, and it’s a vast area of space you could fi ll behind. Enough leg room enough at the wheel of this uber-cool motor.

It’s got all the modern stuff: heated seats and steering wheel, Bluetooth, reversing cameras, media capability, and the list goes on.

I liked the ever-so-easy ‘do it while you’re driving’ knob for manually selecting 4WD mode which had

settings for mud, rock, and others – plus auto, the one you drive around town on.

Yet the driving is so smooth and quiet, there’s no feeling you’re in a massive vehicle.

4WD’s newest fanWhich begs the question, it

must be thirsty, right? This model has a 3L V6 turbo diesel motor. The dealership guys explained drivers can get 1000km out of a tank.

With all the thinking done for you by the computer, the automatic vehicle has 70 years of technology installed, leaving me to concentrate on getting where I wanted to go and have fun in the process.

So, summing up. I felt like this ‘date’ gave me a new found

confi dence and understanding about luxury 4WDs. It’s not a vehicle range I had a lot to do with personally, but I now, I’m a believer.

Apart from the already mentioned buyers, I can see that the Jeep range has a lot to offer NZ drivers. It was nice to drive an American-assembled car and know it came straight from the famous Motor City itself, Detroit.

So if I had the chance to buy one of these vehicles, it would be, without a doubt, right up there on my short list.

This car took me by surprise, by the hand and together we had a ball. I didn’t want the date to end, and I’m pretty sure I’m now in love. Power is a very attractive quality to have on your side.

She is a diva, no doubt.

Elegant, superior and always, always the star of the show. And from another time which makes her even more of a prima donna.

This diva is a car, a 1927 Rolls Royce New Phantom Springfi eld 40/50 touring car. Even at 88 she still turns heads wherever she goes.

She will be the leading lady, weather dependent, at the Bay of Plenty Vintage Car Club’s Annual Car Show on Sunday, November 8.

She’s of British descent, of course, but out of Springfi eld Massachusetts, USA, after the canny Henry Royce and Charles Rolls dipped into the lucrative American market for just fi ve short years, making cars for the super wealthy and discerning motorists.

Her fi rst owner was a doctor, but the car disappeared off the radar for the next few decades. And there are no records of where she went and with whom.

The story has it that later an American owner decided to give her a makeover and started by dismantling her bit by bit. He was overwhelmed and so for a chunk of the 20th Century she lay around in a thousand parts, a most undignifi ed fashion.

Her life started coming together again in 2003 when a Rotorua vintage car enthusiast rescued the parts and started the restoration. This included building a new body.

Now she is resident in Te Puke with Martin and Raewyn Carey. They’ve had her body re-sheathed in polished aluminium, making the car an outstanding relic.

Everything about her is massive. That includes her heart, a 6.7L overhead valve motor. This makes her eminently pleasurable to tour.

The Rolls Royce will grace the Bay of Plenty Vintage Car Club’s Annual Car Show at Cliff Road, Tauranga, next to the Rose Gardens from 8am to 1pm on Sunday, November 8. Hunter Wells
