Even as the Falcon soars into its twilight years, with the last of the iconic Fords to roll off the production line at the end of 2016, Falcon fans know what they like and what they want. They’re buying Falcon to the bitter end.

Bay Driver found out why this week, taking a cruise in the big new Falcon XR6. Looking sharp in winter white, with spoked 19-inch alloys driven by a super smooth, four litre 6 cylinder petrol engine.

The Falcon is loaded with technology, niceties and clever engineering. But overall the most impressive feature

were its presence, its attitude and feeling

of sheer space, strength and comfort.

On the road the Falcon just

feels good. Stable and assured. After all, this is a big

car. This is no waif of a girl fl uttering around the streets.

This is a woman of substance and integrity. If Nigella was a car,

she’d be a Ford Falcon. Call me sexist, but she’s a man’s car.

Big on everythingThe power is immediate and constant through the six

speed auto, with sequential sports shift. She hitches up her rompers and goes. The 6 cylinder engine belts out 195kW

of power and 391 Nm of torque. Falcon is tow rated to 2.3 tonnes braked.

Technology has brought Falcon a long way from the days of the big guz-zlers, too. The quoted combined fuel economy is 9.5 litres/100km.

And you realise you’re not dealing with any lightweight bimbo when it comes to slowing – the full inertia of this beast underway is immediately tamed by some XOS braking gear, including ABS, electronic brake-

force distribution and dynamic stability control.I’ve always liked Ford’s handling. Even back to the days in

a couple of Lasers, the Fords had a sort of precision around corners that was assured and stable.

This big bird is even more emphatic, helped by inherent low ballast, sleek profi le tyres and a wide track.

Sitting on 19” by 8” alloys and 245/35 rubber, she grips the road and propels you out onto the straight like a Ukra-nian shotputter. The one with the big thighs.

Safe and stylishFalcon is equally well endowed on the safety front. Air-

bags for the front seats, front side thorax, and side curtains. It all adds up to a fi ve-star ANCAP rating.

Interior features include incredibly intuitive controls, which are stylish but simple to fi nd and use. Apart from the stack of wifi , sat nav, Bluetooth and audio trinketry, there’s a massive eight inch colour touchscreen telling you everything.

The leather seats are a real nice feature, with tasteful panels and stitching that is quite eye-catching. And there’s acres of it!

Around town was surprisingly easy, there’s no doubting you are driving a big car. But it’s made very easy with the proximity sensors and a brilliant backing camera that fl icks onto the big screen when reverse is selected, showing your projected track and proximity warnings that are simple and clear.

Our test drive took us through the city, beyond the high-way and onto some less-than-perfect back country roads.

Over this varying collection of surfaces, the Falcon is always at home. Nothing fazes this car, tackling uneven terrain, twisty hills and poorly cambered corners with an almost arrogance of surety.

The sport select was a joy to use, again smooth, seamless and exacting. Although the automatic is so clever, seeming to always be in the perfect gear at the right moment; the manual shifter was just as satisfying. But, hey it’s a man thing. Sometimes we just need to think we are in charge.

And while all this manly driving was going on, there was a heap of background entertainment and connection happening. Handsfree music, voice control and music streaming.

Voice activated climate control allows the driver and pas-senger to set and maintain optimal environment, by simply telling the car what you want.

It’s more than just clever gimmicks. It’s seriously clever safety. Being able to make phone calls and transfer them between the car audio system and phone means you can call family and friends by name, without missing a nano-second of the driving responsibility.

Even the sat nav takes directions, which makes a refresh-ing change.

Taking any road conditions in its long stride, it’s easy to see why Falcon has been a favourite of farmers, high mile-age travellers, caravan and boat owners, executives – and men who don’t watch cooking shows for the food.
