New muscle for Ford RangerNew muscle for Ford RangerNew muscle for Ford RangerThe Weekend Sun Bay DriverPage 4 Friday 21 October 2011 Friday 21 October 2011Friday 21 October 2011

By Richard Rennie

With the release this week of the impressive new Ford Ranger, Ford’s ‘family’ of all-new models is nearly complete. Job almost done then… and there’s plenty to boast about, as

we discovered on our test drive. It seems Ford can do no wrong these days.

After weathering the great ‘Auto Meltdown’ that struck some of its competitors in the United States in 2008-2009, the blue logo is proudly stuck to the front of some truly class-leading vehicles.

They include the perennial Kiwi favourite Falcon, the car that almost everyone has driven at some time in their driving life, and which seems to get better with every new model out.

Then there’s the stunning Mondeo, setting

new standards in cabin space and features in a mid-size sedan; the Territory with a new diesel engine injecting more life into an already hugely successful vehicle; the hot new Focus, available in 1.6 or 2.0 litre (petrol or diesel) engines, and it’s ragingly successful little bro’, the Fiesta.

Completing the line-up this month is the all new Ford Ranger… and it proves that Ford’s utes are defi nitely not the poor cousins to the other sleek, sexy models in the Ford family.

More muscular, more powerfulThe previous Ranger went about its busi-

ness quietly; it did the job, didn’t attract a lot of attention and performed as any good solid workhorse should.

With the new Ranger, however, you get almost twice the vehicle… literally! The chassis is almost twice the size of the last model, but it also comes with a far more purposeful look. It has a muscular, assertive profi le, a heap of torque and a very stylish design inside and out that fi ts as well downtown as it will uphill.

Excitement about the new Ranger at Tauranga’s Ford deal-ership, Ultimate Motor Group, on Hewletts Road, Mount Maunganui, is palpable, and it is easy to see why before you even get it out of the yard! There is a very confi dent, masculine

look about this machine, with a smooth, fl uid design that runs along the driver’s door, drifts over the passenger door and on to the fl ared wheel arches. Then there’s the unmis-takeable Ford front grille that captures some of the Territory’s DNA in its design and looks.

Under that handsome bonnet of the test vehicle, the XLT variant, sits a very grunty 3.2 litre fi ve cylinder diesel that delivers a stump pulling mass of 470nM of torque… quite a jump on what is likely to be its big-gest competitor the 3.0 litre Hilux.

Coming with that pulling power is a class leading towing ability, a closely-held accolade in ute circles, which comes in at 3.35 tonnes (braked) for the Ranger.

All this power comes through a six speed manual with that sixth notch knocking the revs right down on the open road to a gentle 1800rpm spin. There’s also very little road or engine noise intruding into the well-insu-lated and spacious cabin.

Superior ride qualityWith 180 markets in its sights for the

Ranger globally, Ford has gone to great steps to make this a machine that everyone will feel comfortable in, up front and in the back, without dumbing it down or creating a func-tional, but bland means to get around.

The seating position is pure car, and com-fortable car at that, you don’t have that jittery feeling of being perched and rocked around while you combat the jiggers from a rough

diesel up front. This feels like a car for ride quality, layout and comfort – mainly thanks to a new hard-rubber ‘hydro’ mount system between the chassis rail and cabin which reduces body shake and intrusion. Appar-ently, Ford cabin designers were inspired by the ultra-tough and proven Casio G Shock watch for inspiration, delivering a sleek, rounded ‘techno’ look to the dash that works well in a market tuned in to engineering, technology and simple tough coolness.

There is an extremely accurate voice oper-ated system too, that didn’t struggle with this reviewer’s fading consonants, whether to change the radio station, increase the dual zone climate air conditioning, or switch to the phone to make some calls.

There is plenty of good storage space including under the rear seats, plugs for USB and MP3’s, Bluetooth, of course, and the ability to switch to High 4WD at speeds up to 120km/h – all with the simple turn of a dial.

A new leaf spring suspension down the back and a combination of coils and shocks up the front deliver secure, planted handling without any disconcerting skate you often get with utes. The fact that it was compre-hensively tested in the Australian Outback under some pretty trying conditions… and came through with fl ying colours… also speaks volumes.

In all honesty, this is the best ute Bay Driver has driven yet. With its smart new design, great handling and deliciously grunty engine, which is as comfortable torquing over the hills as it is cruising on the motor-way, it seems like the Ranger will be pretty hard to beat – in town or on the farm.

The Ford Ranger XLT has a masculine, defi nitive profi le that will win

plenty of admiring glances around town or on the open road.

Under the bonnet, the Ranger has a 3.2 litre, fi ve cylinder

diesel powertrain that puts it at the top of its class.

Hidden containers under the rear seats are a practical

and easily-accessed storage option.

The driving environment is extremely well spec’d and laid out in an innovative manner – partly inspired by the Casio G Shock watch.

If your car is about seven years old it may pay to have the air conditioning

unit checked before the weather heats up during summer.

Automotive air conditioning maintenance and repairs is only one of the specialist services the friendly crew at Autospark pro-vide, but it just happens to be something they are very good at.

They’re not half bad at all the other services they provide too, like general mechanical and electrical repairs.

Owner Dave Yardley has more than 32 years experience as an air conditioning serviceman and auto electrician, while fully qualifi ed automotive technicians Darryl Greasley and Tim McGregor are the experts when it comes to all things mechanical under the bonnet.

“This time of year is ideal to remind motorists about their car’s air conditioning,” says Dave.

“For a fl at rate of $145 we will re-gas and fully service the air con unit and make sure that it will be ready to work effi ciently once summer kicks in.”

Auto electrical repairs are another area of expertise for the Autospark team. Using the latest computer equipment, they can easily diagnose any electrical problems in your car. “Common problems that crop up on cars are with alternators, starter motors and batteries,” says Dave.“We also have a lot of calls from customers who have noticed that the airbag (SRS) light has come on.

“The best thing is for them to come in, let us hook the car up to our diagnostic machine and we’ll quickly identify where the problem is and how to fi x it.”

Using this system, Autospark can then provide a prompt, reasonably-priced repair service.

Having opened Autospark only two years ago, Dave has worked hard to build up a thriving business. He enjoys support from the local car dealer community, many of who rely on Autospark to ensure that their stock vehicles are in excellent mechanical order prior to being advertised for sale.

They also clearly appreciate Dave’s com-petitive pricing and trust that he will do an outstanding job on their cars.

“I want happy customers who are so pleased with what we have done for them that they go away and tell their friends and family to come and see us,” adds Dave.

Autospark is located at 177 11th Avenue, near the St John Street intersection; open Monday to Friday. Call in or phone Dave to fi nd out more about how they can turn your next “car nightmare” into a far less painful experience.

Keep your cool in the car

BMW agent Mount Motorcycles Ltd is looking forward to showcasing the latest BMW machines as part of New Zealand’s inaugural MOTORRAD

Demo Days on November 5.These events have a big following overseas

and this is the fi rst time that Tauranga riders will have the opportunity, not only to test ride the dynamic new BMW model of their choice, but also to fi nd out all the technical details and purchase options from the friendly team at Mount Motorcycles.

BMW New Zealand are bringing some of their unique bikes over from Australia, including the K1200R, K1300S, K1300R, K1600GT, R1200R, R1200RT and the R1200GS.

Mount Motorcycles will also have their own demo models, the G650GS and the F800GS,

available for test rides plus some great deals on other models in stock.

The event will run from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, November 5 at Mount Motorcycles, 23 Totara Street, Mount Maun-ganui. There will be free refreshments available too, including a sausage sizzle. All demo rides are for half hour time slots on previ-ously mapped-out routes and need to be booked in advance. Customers can also book multiple rides, but must be sure to bring their full bike licence with them.

“We are really looking forward to being able to have these fantastic bikes here for local people to try,” says Mount Motorcycles co-owner, Carolyn Holmes.

“Interest is high and we have had plenty of calls already from people keen to reserve a demo ride on their favourite bike. So, to avoid disappointment, I suggest that people call us as quickly as possible to book their ride.”

Mount Motorcycles was started by Bill Holmes in Te Puke in 1971 and moved to the Mount soon after. Now owned and oper-ated by Bill’s son, Ray Holmes and his wife Carolyn, they have been selling and servicing BMW motorcycles since 1977 – making them one of the longest standing BMW dealers in the country.

This gives them an in-depth knowledge of the BMW product and allows them to provide the kind of service that keeps their customers coming back year in and year out.

They are also agents for Vespa Scooters.

Ray is a qualifi ed motorcycle technician and has history as a competitive motorcycle racer.

With his father heavily involved in the bike racing scene, Ray can proudly say that he attended his fi rst racing event when he was only two weeks old.

He has been working with motorcycles ever since.

He has also worked as a mechanic with the Air New Zealand Racing Team and for one of New Zealand’s top motorcycle champions, Trevor Discombe.

Ray and Carolyn are supported in the busi-ness by technicians Owen, Darryl and their nephew, Rhys Holmes.

Like his uncle, Rhys also has bike racing in his blood, recently earning himself a sponsored ride for the coming NZ Superbike Series on a BMW S1000RR bike.

It is their long-standing passion for the product that fi rmly establishes Ray and Carolyn as experts when it comes to BMW motorcycles.

Their fi rst BMW bike was a 1960 R60,

which had already clocked up an incredible 200,000 miles on an around-the-world trip before they bought it.

With Ray’s loving attention, it kept going strong for four years and even had a side chair fi tted to it to accommodate their growing family so that they could continue attending BMW rallies.

Over the years, Mount Motorcycles have sold and serviced some of the major bike brands, including Triumph, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and Kawasaki, as well as BMW.

In 2005, they decided to become a sole agent for BMW motorcycles.

“Concentrating on just one premium brand allows us to give a more specialised service and to carry a wider range of parts and acces-sories,” adds Carolyn.

The upcoming Motorrad Event is the ideal opportunity for anyone who has ever won-dered what it would be like to ride and own one of these superbly crafted machines to get some hands-on experience. It is also a rare chance for BMW enthusiasts to get up close and personal with a few of the more harder-to-fi nd models.

Ray, Carolyn and their team will be on site to share their knowledge and to guide poten-tial buyers through the various purchasing options. There will also be a good range of accessories on display. Please see the ad below for further information and times.
