SPECS

Lancer GSR Sedan

For more than a few years, I have been enticed by the Mitsubishi campaign

surrounding the various Lancer releases. You’ll remember the ads: Get a brand new Mitsi

for mid-$20,000 and a 10-year warrantee. It seemed to be an exceptional entry level price,

with a very reassuring dealer

warrantee and service program. What struck me about these advertisements was the fact that

this wasn’t just a micro shopping basket – it was the GSR! The rally inspired, everyman’s Mitsi.

Heading down Cameron Road past Bay City Mitsubishi and you could be forgiven for doing a double take at what appears to be a high-spec rally car for less than $30k. Once a part of the high-performance Lancer Evo (or Evolution) sports sedan model line-up, the Mitsubishi GSR is now positioned in the middle of the Lancer range and is proving to be a very affordable option for those who appreciate the subtle lines of rally car design.

New year, new lookAaron Chatfi eld, dealer principal for Bay City Mitsubishi,

has told Bay Driver that “the facelift brings a refreshing update on the recognisable Lancer front across our entire range”.

“The new dual split grille frame design, along with chrome highlights and sharp front splitter, unifi es the front bumper and grille producing an elegant yet sporty style.

LED daylight running lights, integrated fog lights and more sporty side skirts on the outside have been added across the range giving it the appearance of a luxury sports car.

“The new range has been given a signifi cant boost to the levels of standard equipment across almost all variants.”

Bex Osmond of Instant Effect – Plants, Landscaping and Design, Papamoa, was our Bay Driver this week and, as a self-confessed girl racer, was eager to get behind the wheel when we arrived.

Reaching straight for the stereo controls, it was good

to see the late twenty-something had her priorities straight when readying herself for the test drive of a new car and she was impressed with the six-speaker, full colour touch screen audio system. It complements a new centre console and high-contrast instrument cluster to round out the new interior refresh.

Born to rideBex drove us to one of her company’s recent projects, a

magnifi cent property west of the city, which she selected as the stage for our Lancer photoshoot.

On the way she commented on the smooth ride offered by the GSR and it wasn’t long before she took advantage of the Tiptronic transmission controls like a professional rally driver as we weaved through the windy roads of Oropi.

Upon arriving Bex told us she felt the Lancer’s handling was fi rm and predicable, but most of all “it was also fun”.

The new Lancer now comes with an enhanced continuously variable transmission (CVT) as introduced on ASX and Outlander, giving it improved shift feeling and better acceleration. Fuel economy has also been improved on sedan models to a stand-out 7.2L/100km.

Thanks to new hydraulic power steering, the new Lancer handles better than ever. The amount of rally-bred technology that goes into Lancer might seem like overkill, but as you turn into a good sharp corner, or swerve to avoid a sudden hazard, you’ll see why Mitsubishi went to all the trouble.

The Lancer is a superb car to drive – its lines encompass speed and performance, yet its drivetrain technology is engineered to be as adept at purring as roaring. Its fi ve-star host of active and passive safety measures are have also been designed to keep you and your loved ones from harm’s way.

The concept of a large SUV packed with a suite of new technologies and design ideas has been unveiled by Kia Motors at the 2016

Detroit Motor Show.

Kia for a new SUVBuilt on a stretched Kia Sorento

platform, the Telluride concept is a glimpse of a possible future full-size seven passenger model that may go into production.

It impressed many in Detroit, in particular the US magazine Consumer Reports, which placed the Telluride among its Top Nine Best Cars at the show, declaring the “three row SUV looks like it’s ready to go on sale tomorrow with just a few tweaks”.

The Telluride is some 241mm longer than the Sorento, 119mm wider and 112mm higher, giving it a sizeable on road presence. The wheelbase has also been stretched by 302mm to deliver a roomy interior.

It features rear-hinged back doors to create an expansive and panoramic interior space, minus the usual B-pillars on conventional cars. The seats themselves appear to ‘fl oat’ within the cabin space, while the second row seats recline nearly fl at and include large fold-away footrests for superior comfort.

All four seats include a series of precision diamond-cut openings in the seatback, each embedded with Smart Sensors to capture the occupant’s vital health information.

Information is displayed on the interior door panel screens and systematically synchronise with a Light Emitted Rejuvenation (LER) system embedded into a wing-shaped LED panel mounted beneath the oversized sunroof, which displays a pattern of therapeutic light to “treat desynchronosis (jetlag) and improve the passengers’ energy levels”.

Another unique technology is Swipe

Command – a thin, touch-sensitive, interactive band mounted to the centre console between the second row seats – allowing passengers to quickly scroll and select desired media by swiping their hand.

The selected media is then played either through the premium seven-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, or via a set of portable Harman Kardon headphones that wirelessly charge when stowed in the console.

Will the Kia Telluride ever go into production? Kia isn’t saying, but the company does have a history of delivering production vehicles that bear strong resemblance to preceding concepts.

“It’s an interesting concept,” say Kia Motors NZ general manager Todd McDonald.

“The designers have obviously had a lot of fun with the styling – both inside and out – and it will be interesting to see which of these elements make it into future production vehicles.

“We already know that we will see some of the technologies shown on the Telluride, such as the wireless smartphone charging. It’s a glimpse into the future.”

The Telluride has been unveiled by Kia Motors.

Sample picture only – specs may differ slightly. The vehicle shown has optional accessories fitted. Price advertised above is based on the Actyon Sports 2WD diesel manual.

With its idyllic coastlines, breath-taking views and winding roads, it’s

no wonder why many motorists love driving on the

Coromandel Peninsula. But for owners of electric vehicles,

the joy of driving on the Coromandel has often been out of their vehicles’ reach – until now.

Earlier this month the Kopu Café just south of Thames installed the fi rst commercial electric vehicle charging point on the Coromandel. Another charge point in Thames is also planned and will be sponsored by community advocacy group Transition Town Thames (T3).

T3 member and electric car owner John Leeman says the Kopu Cafe charge point is just the fi rst step in a network of charging stations around the peninsula.

“So there is not so much worry about ‘range anxiety’, caused when you fret about running out of juice. The power comes from the grid and is totally safe.”

Electric cars having a range of 120km to 140km, and take between 30 minutes and fi ve hours to charge, depending on the car and charger.

Compared to petrol cars, electric cars have

no clutch, gears, spark plugs or engine oil, requires less maintenance, and accelerate more quickly and smoothly.

They are also extremely quiet and reduce noise pollution, while travelling down hills or braking recharges the batteries and is known as regenerative braking.

“The reason I am so enthusiastic about electric vehicles is because it is the simplest way to make a personal contribution to saving the planet,” says John.

To charge up your electric car at the Kopu Cafe will cost $2.50/per hour.

When it came to recharging vehicle batteries, one size didn’t always

fi t them all. But Projecta Battery Chargers are changing that point

of view.Mechanical workshops have to be versatile

these days, able to service a wide assortment of passenger cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and even farm machines and boats, particularly if based away from major towns and cities in New Zealand.

This can lead to issues arising from the variety of different battery types they come across, including Deep Cycle, AGM, Gel, Calcium, Marine, Stop/Start and Starting, which may require different battery chargers/managers to suit their unique requirements.

Now Projecta has developed one battery charger to serve them all and it has just been released in New Zealand.

The new Projecta HDBM4000, 8-stage 6/12/24V 3-40A Workshop Battery Charger caters to all vehicle, equipment and marine battery types in a clever, single unit that provides effective and worry-free testing, charging and maintenance.

Unlike conventional 40A workshop chargers, the Projecta is light and compact, while featuring a tough housing to meet the demands of service centre environments.

Simple to use, once connected to the battery, the HDBM4000 automatically sets an ideal charge rate (3-40A) which can be manually adjusted, if required. With multi-chemistry battery selection, including a cold temperature

mode, the advanced eight-stage charging programme can help rejuvenate sulphated batteries and remove acid stratifi cation from calcium batteries, ensuring a full charge and optimum battery condition.

In addition to its superior charging functions, the HDBM4000 analyses overall battery condition, testing charge level and starting capacity, while also checking for alternator faults.

As a power source, it can deliver clear and stable power during diagnostic testing, ensuring accurate readings, and if battery

replacement is needed, it maintains a constant voltage to ensure vehicle memory settings are retained until a new battery is hooked up.

Another excellent feature of the HDBM4000 is the clever engine

start mode for batteries that have gone fl at, which delivers a short and powerful charge that can have a vehicle ready

to start in fi ve minutes, while a ‘showroom mode’ allows the

unit to operate silently if charging at night or in a quiet environment.

All functions are controlled via simple three-button operation, with a large and easy-to-read LCD interface displaying all operational information for the technician to see at a glance.

The unit comes standard with 3m leads and battery clamps, but longer leads of six metres and ten metres are available at additional cost. Also available is a docking station bracket that allows fast and effi cient mounting of the unit and neat stowage of its leads.

Projecta battery charger covers all types

The new Projecta HDBM4000

charger can handle all types of vehicle,

equipment and marine batteries.
