Our summer programsprovide summer associates with an opportunity to explore our practiceareas, learn about our office and Firm operations, and experience life inNorthern California.
Kirkland’s tradition of giving junior associates early responsibility beginswith the summer program. As a summer associate in the San Franciscoor Palo Alto office, you’ll work on sophisticated matters alongside theFirm’s associates and partners, who are eager to support and guide youalong the way.

Training & DevelopmentSummer associates also get a taste of Kirkland’srobust training and development programs.
The Kirkland Institute for Trial Advocacy (KITA)consists of a series of direct and crossexaminations conducted in a trial-like setting. Toprepare for KITA, summer associates participate ina series of training sessions that cover how toprepare openings, closings, direct and crossexaminations, and how to use documentaryevidence and demonstrative aids. All summerassociates participate in KITA, whether or not theyplan to be trial lawyers after law school.
Summer associates can also attend the KirklandInstitute of Corporate Practice (KICP) sessions tofamiliarize themselves with our varioustransactional practice areas. These trainings
culminate with a mock negotiation program. Allsummer associates also participate in KICP.
Summer in the Bay AreaAs a Bay Area summer associate, your schedulewill be packed with social events that introduceyou to Kirkland attorneys and life at the Firm. Pastevents have included dinner parties at partners’homes, wine tastings, bowling and bocce ball games,sailing on the Bay, pizza-making competitions, andWorld Series Champion San Francisco Giantsbaseball games.
San Francisco and Palo Alto are filled with greatrestaurants, night life venues and culturalattractions including the Golden Gate Bridge,Alcatraz, museums, state parks and more.Neighboring areas such as Marin, Sausalito, Napa,Carmel and Monterey make great day trips.
