One way to stay motivated is to constantly remind yourself that a worth-while pay-off lies ahead; a new, healthy, strong you is emerging. Effective, consistent exercise will not only improve your overall health and fit-ness, but will also improve your appearance, energy level, and social interactions. Also, look forward to the many psychological benefits as well: confidence, self-esteem, and relief from depression, anxiety and stress.

If you are serious about your health and well-being, you will take action and begin an exercise program, and you will benefit in all these ways. Once you see the results, you will become even more motivated. Action creates motivation!

Set Goals

Goal-setting is another great way of stay-ing motivated. Goals focus your workout program and clarify what you are trying to achieve. As you attain each goal, you gain

encouragement and further motivation. Here is how to achieve the goals you set and obtain the results you deserve.

1. Make sure your goals are measurable: A vague goal, such as “I want to be fit,” gives you nothing to shoot for. Decide when and what you are going to achieve, such as “I want to lose 2 percent of my body fat by February 1st.”

2. Be realistic: Make sure your goals are attainable. If you set your expectations too high, you will get frustrated and will be more likely to quit. Make sure, however, that your goals are not too easy; they should be challenging. When you achieve a challeng-ing goal, your pride and satisfaction will create more motivation.

3. Set short-term goals as stepping stones to your “ultimate” (long-term) goals: If your long-term goal is to bench press 200 pounds in one year, then set short-term weekly or

monthly goals of the weight you will need to bench press to achieve your long term goal--develop a plan. It is a lot easier to accomplish a goal one day or week at a time, such as increasing 2.5 or 5 pounds a week, than it is to think that you need to increase your bench press by 50 pounds.

A way to assure that you stay motivated is to make exercise fun. If you perceive your workout as a chore, you more than likely will not stick with it.

Staying Motivated

It’s getting harder and harder to figure out how to travel and look great at the same time. No more large containers of mascara, lip gloss or toothpaste! Hair spray is verboten and gels and mousses in-flight are but a wistful memory for the style-obsessed traveler. But with a little help from the Transpor-tation Security Administration (T.S.A.), you can arrive in style with nothing but small contain-ers of liquid in a clear plastic bag and a little imagination.

1. Tie your hair in a scarf to combat bad hair at the end of a long flight -- make it a Hermes to add extra glamour.2. Hair powder, like a dry shampoo, helps combat oily scalp or limp hair.3. Leave your house with a leave-in conditioner in your hair. Wrap it in a scarf, and you’ll get a deep-conditioning treatment while you earn the miles -- excellent for combat-ing the overly dry air on board4. As always, carry a great hairbrush. They like the junior Maison & Pearson.5. Don’t forget hair shine paper. It helps eliminate static and reduce dullness.6. Cucumber eye pads. Pre-moistened pads soothe and refresh tired and puffy eyes. These can also be refrigerated prior to travel to further refresh eyes during flight.7. Pre-moistened makeup remover cloths remove makeup or just clean the skin mid- or post-travel. Neutrogena or Mac brands are good. (Note: These pre-moistened tow-elettes must be placed in your one-quart bag of liquids.)8. Makeup corrector sticks help correct little smudges, blotches or “I-can’t sleep-because-I’m-stuck-in-the-center-aisle” circles under the eyes.9. Cake mascara is a great alternative when liquids are not allowed. This is the classic Hollywood way to darken and define the eyelashes. It comes in a pressed, cake form and can be mixed with water then applied with a firm brush. They recommend curling the lashes first -- Paula Dorf or Longcils Boncza brands are favorites.10. Solid cocoa butter and cotton gloves for a hand treat-ment (also place in one quart travel bag). And at the end of it all, Edriss and Landy recommend a good night’s sleep, a 16-oz. bottle of water and a pair of designer sunglasses so that others will think you’re a rock star, not just a fatigued fellow traveler.

Summer is one of my favor-ite times of year to cook and explore. The incredible variety of fresh produce and fruit at the Farmers Market is all the inspi-ration a home chef needs to get their creative juices flowing. At our house, much of the summer is spent grilling in the backyard. But when fresh Dungeness crab is available, the call for crab cakes is often overwhelming. The crunchy exterior and sweet interior, with the right amount of heat and

fresh squeezed lemon is one of the best and easiest dishes in my summer repertoire.

The key to crab cakes is no different than any other great dish. Find fresh Dugeness crab. If you’re getting ready to put your cakes together, feel free to grab a bite or two of the crab when no one is looking. It’s fun, builds your appetite and gets you in the mood to create.

Start off with at least a pound of fresh Dungeness crab meat. In a large mixing bowl, add an egg, diced red, yellow or orange bell peppers, green onions, chives, bread crumbs and garlic aioli. Mix by hand. Don’t add too many vegetables or bread crumbs as you do not want to dilute the crab. Remem-ber, you’re only trying to add flavor, color and a binder. At that point, let the mixture rest and come together in the refrigera-tor.

After 30 minutes to an hour, heat a non-stick pan, lightly dredge the cakes and drop a few in at a time. They’ll cook quickly so have your plates ready. Place the crab cakes on a bed of arugula, squeeze fresh lemon, add salt, pepper and you’re set. All you need is the wine.

Crab cakes are versatile. They pair well with a myriad of wines, both red and white. For this meal, we shared 2007 Aubert Reuling Chardonnay. One of the top producers of California Chardonnay.

2007 Aubert Reuling opens with a powerful display of floral, apple, vanilla, citrus, honey and pear scents. Rich, full bodied and packed with sweet, ripe, fruits, the wine ends with a long, tropical, citrus and vanilla tinged finish.

Most kids look forward to three months of noth-ing but fun and games, but, as a parent, you know that learning should take place year round.

And while it can be hard to get your child’s attention among all the swimming pools, video games and tv shows, it’s important that you keep the learning going during the summertime. That way, when they return to school in the fall, they’ll be enriched and ready to learn.

Here are several fun ways to keep your kids learning all summer long.

1. Start your summer learning adventure by

heading to your local library. Most libraries offer reading programs each summer that challenge your child to read. They may have flyers to help your child stay on track and reading suggestions divided by age group. Taking a weekly trip to the local library will be a great family activity to look forward to each week.

2. Instead of letting your child sit in front of video games all summer long, why not make the process educational? There are many education-al computer games and games for video game systems that allow your child to have fun and can help them keep up to date with their basic skills at the same time. Make sure to use the video games in moderation.

3. Check out some free learning websites for kids. Three to try: Funbrain.com, math.com and abcte-ach.com which has printable worksheets.

4. Summer is a perfect time to discover, or re-discover, the unique learning opportunities in your neighborhood. If you haven’t been to the local museum or other historic location within driving distance of your home, now is the time to do it. Make sure to talk about the history, science or other subject you’ll be learning about so your kids can get the most out of the experience.

5. Allow each of your children to choose a com-prehensive workbook that they can work on a bit each day. Some workbooks cover math, reading, social studies and science. You might want to work out an incentive program to make sure they get their worksheets done each day.

6. Play some educational, age-appropriate games, such as Scrabble, Boggle or chess. Purchase some family favorites in travel edi-tions so the kids can play them on car rides and on vacation.

7. If there was a subject your kids struggled with during the school year, now is the time to get tutoring or enroll them in a program to help them catch up. Make the experience fun by balancing their study time with some good old-fashioned family fun.

If you tried to pack all of these ideas into one summer, you’d have a tired kid on your hands! Pick a few to try and keep the learn-ing going throughout summer. By making learning fun, your child won’t realize they are learning at all.
