Welcome to the October edition of BAWTRY TODAYBAWTRY TODAY.

How the months are flying by this year, already leaves are starting to fall from the trees and the days are getting so much shorter. I’m still wearing my favourite Fitflops but I think that the time has come to put them away and get out my winter boots!

I think that this issue is a Christmas free zone, however next month is sure to be full of Christmas themed adverts. The November and December magazines are always very popular so don’t leave it too late to contact me if you would like to book an advert in either edition. The November edition will be delivered from 30th October. Please ensure that any-thing that you would like to be included in it is with me by Friday 15th October.

Best Wishes, Paula

Bawtry Health & Fitness

Exercise or Prescription? (Part 2)

In previous issues we have discussed injury prevention, rehabilitation and training regimes but the question “when can I start playing my sport again” always crops up. We will cover that in the next issue but some important components in addition to treatment and management of sports injuries should be included. Immobilisation should be minimised to decrease the severity of disuse atrophy (wasting) and general conditioning. X training activities to maintain CVR fitness, strength and flexibility of uninjured regions. Core strengthening is an important part of rehabilitation but should also include the entire kinetic chain (connecting joints/musculature) for the injured region.

In the next issue I will answer that all important question. If you have any questions on any subjects please email them to the appropriate address below. We are “one stop” for all your injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and fitness programmes. Check us out below. Sports Cars to Screwdrivers How the Credit Crunch Inspired a Local Handyman Service

Like many people, you’ve probably got a list of jobs around the home waiting to be done. Not necessarily big jobs, but things that you work around and live with like a dripping tap or a sticking door. It was a determination to clear the ‘To Do’ list that inspired Tickhill resident Rob Uney to set up his business WorkSure Property Care in August last year. Rob has lived in the village most of his life but working as a Project Manager for the Warwickshire based luxury car maker Aston Martin, meant many hours on the road and living away from his wife Kath for much of the week.

When the credit crunch took a hold on the motor industry however, Rob was offered voluntary redundancy. He decided to combine his practical abilities with the experience gained in the high quality, customer-oriented environment of Aston Martin. “I saw an opportunity to get some quality of life back and a new direction and it was the ‘To Do’ list that provided that inspiration!”

Rob saw a need for a reliable maintenance service that customers could call on, often for the small nuisance jobs that people find difficulty in getting anyone to do. Early feedback was excellent and so WorkSure was formed and Rob’s never looked back. “I’ve built a reputation for delivering high standards of quality and care whilst providing a completely flexible service. On Christmas Eve we were tasked with assembling a trampoline ready for Christmas Day, and I had a frantic call on New Year’s Eve at 7pm for a toilet that wouldn’t flush – somewhat of an emergency when they had a houseful of guests due to arrive!” WorkSure also raised funds for the Haiti earthquake by offering to take down Christmas trees from local businesses for a small charge with all the proceeds going straight to the appeal.

So if you have a job, however small or large, why not give WorkSure a call and let Rob reduce your ‘To Do’ list.

WorkSure can be contacted on 01302 743440 or [email protected] .

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club

Such is the power of the Press! Since we started putting quarterly articles in the Tickhill and Bawtry Today magazines our membership has increased by 17.46%. Quoting such a useless figure probably tells you that by profession I was either an engineer or a politician (engineer actually) but it also means that our membership has increased to 74 and that its slow decline over recent years has been reversed. Thank you, Paula for providing the means whereby we can publicise our activities. We still have room for a few more members so if you feel that as a retired professional or businessman you would like to join us please come along to the Millstone Hotel on the 2nd or 4th Thursday of each month and see if you like what you find.

Our programme for the next three months is as follows: 14th October. “Magic Mushrooms” by Dr P Harding. 28th October. “Laughton and District - Steeped in History” by Roy Newman 11th November. “Remembering” by Members. 25th November. Members Annual Dinner 9th December. “The Sweet Fifties” by Mr T. Dixon 23rd December. “Vestas” by David Woodall. All meetings are held at the Millstone Hotel and with the exception of the Members Annual Dinner meetings start at 10.30 AM with coffee served from 10.00 AM. We look forward to seeing you all.

Who has what secrets at the Hotel Nova Paradise? Find out when the Village Players (Everton) proudly present their next produc-tion, the comedy Let’s Pre-tend, first performed at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in 1995. The hotel Nova Paradise has seen better days and so have some of its long stay British resi-dents, who, it emerges, are escaping more than the UK weather. Things go awry when the arrival of a young couple booked into the hotel by mistake coincides with a near riot by the hotel staff as harassed holiday rep Karen struggles to keep both order and her job. Layers of deceit are peeled away with increasing speed as se-crets are revealed, leaving everyone exposed to the dangers of pretence and deception. Described by The Stage as “a superb evening of riotous enter-tainment”, Let’s Pretend balances comedy, at times bordering on farce, and pathos, leaving the audience in suspense until the very end. Performances will take place in Everton Village Hall from Wednesday 27th to Saturday 30th October. Tickets, which are priced at £5 (£4 for students) can be obtained from their Box Office (01777 817275), or web site: www.evplayers.org.uk.

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary. Narrow Lane Bawtry Doncaster

The leaves are falling from the trees and summer is like a long distant memory. It is a good feeling knowing that we have re homed so many cats and dogs this year, and so many wonderful people have made this possible. But the list goes on, we re home one dog and there are two or even three to take its place. We hate to think what would happen to all these lovely dogs and cats if it wasn't for Sanctuaries like ours throughout the country.

Good news on Bella our Mayflower Star, she has at last found the loving home we all hoped would come her way . She is packing her bag and saying goodbye to everyone that has cared for her and loved her while she has been with us. Hopefully her new owners will keep us well informed of her progress and we will look forward to seeing her looking proud and happy.

A dog that needs our help at the moment is Doug, he is a Pointer that has been involved in a road traffic accident that has left him with a badly disfigured face and blind in one eye. He is a young dog only one or two years old, he is a pleasant happy boy that loves to play and is good with other dogs. If you are calling at the Sanctuary please ask to see him, it is really heart-warming to see how some animals cope with a disability.

The dog warden brought Kylie to us. She is a Staffy cross and still a puppy around 5 months old. This puppy is so depressed she wont lift her head up from her bed. She has one of the worst cases of flea alergy's that we have seen, she is totally infested with them . She has only a small amount of fur left on her body all you see is skin that is dry, broken and bleeding .She will need specialist medication and treatment for quite some time but we hope she will make a full recovery.

The dog warden has also brought us a litter of one day old puppies with their mum who is a rough coated cross breed, at least she is safe now and has the opportunity of rearing her little ones in a loving environment.

Always the bridesmaid never the bride that's what Ellie is. She is a small collie cross around three and a half years old, she is good with other dogs and children, but always seems to get over looked when we have visitors . Please ask to see her if you are looking for that special pet.

We still have lots of beautiful cats and kittens ready for adoption . One kitten was recently found on a building site with maggots eating away at it. This very lucky kitten was taken straight to the vets and is now on the road to recovery.

We are looking for a foster home for an elderly cat, she has health issues which we will continue to provide for. She is ten years old and is a pretty Calico colour. Can you help give her a loving home and a warm bed, that is all she will ask for.

The next fund raiser we are looking forward to is our an-nual sponsored dog walk in Bawtry forest. Everyone is welcome. If you need any sponsor forms please give us a call . Please come along and support us, this is a beautiful forest and a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning . So put the 10th October in your diary and join us to make this another successful fund raiser.

In the next few weeks we will be re organising our charity shop in Manton, so if you are looking for that Christmas gift that wont break the bank come along and have a browse . Our volunteers will be pleased to see you. If you have any really good quality items or un-wanted gifts please donate them to our shop we will be very grateful.

Our new website is at last up and running. You will find us at www.mayflowersanctuary.co.uk.

Please call the Sanctuary on 01302 711330 or Mags 07969 203206 if you would like any further information about our Sanctuary

Bawtry Town Council NEWSLETTER

October 2010

www.bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk

Archaeological Dig - Tickhill Road

The Department of Archaeology at Sheffield University has recently completed a dig at the Chapel building on Tickhill Road, at the entrance to Bawtry Hall and Pemberton Ings. Dr Dawn Hadley wrote to the Council with an outline of the findings:-

Seventeen individuals were excavated which, at this stage, it is believed they derive from the medieval cemetery. Analysis of the disarticulated human remains (ie from graves disturbed by later burials) indicates that there are many more people represented amongst the remains excavated. None of the graves contained any artefacts and little evidence of coffins was found, although one piece of metal may come from a coffin.

The post excavation analysis is currently being completed and a draft report will be available in the coming weeks. Negotiations are taking place with a specialist in facial reconstruction to try to have one or two of the individuals, whose remains were excavated, reconstructed. This will be an exciting development and permit a very tangible insight into the ancestors of the inhabitants of Bawtry.

It is also hoped to be able to undertake stable isotope analysis, which will reveal the origins of the people buried at the site. The university is still of the opinion that the remains are from the documented hospital of St Mary Magdelene but the population did not demonstrate much evidence of illness. This is not surprising as medieval hospitals catered for people with a vari-ety of needs, not just those who were ill.

Casual Vacancy - New Councillor

Bawtry Town Council has co-opted Mr Alex Wright to fill the vacancy created by the resigna-tion of Councillor R. Byrne. Councillor Wright has been resident in Bawtry for over 40 years and has previously served as a member of the Council.

Tunneltech North

Mr Simon Middlebrook attended the September meeting to explain the current position re-garding new installations at the site. He was left in no doubt as to the strong feelings of the Council and residents of Bawtry about the continuing problems. Mr Middlebrook has agreed to return to our October meeting to update the Council on the progress made.

In the meantime residents are asked to continue reporting smells to Bassetlaw Council and if possible to make contact with Tunneltech to advise them of any reports made.

12th Doncaster (Bawtry) Scout Group Camp 2010

Walesby Forest Activity Centre was the setting for this year’s Group Camp.

3 Scouts and 18 Cubs spent the weekend camping, with 5 Beavers visiting on the Saturday.

This year’s theme was “Pirates” and there was plenty of skulduggery and swashbuckling to do!!

Our pirates had to make their own costumes and activities included rafting, an assault course and to follow a course in the twilight zone.

It was an excellent adventure and fun was had by all.

Our Group is currently looking for a Scout Leader. If you are interested and would like some more information, please contact Christine Rogerson on 01302 745172.

Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield

Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield has confirmed that easyJet would not be flying from the airport from 4th January 2011.

Nick Smillie, Aviation Sales Director for Peel Airports, said: “We are naturally very disappointed by easyJet’s decision to withdraw flights from Doncaster Sheffield Airport”

“Operational restrictions, largely due to the fact that the aircraft is not Doncaster based, have affected the viability of the operation. For example, the timings of certain key flights have affected their attractiveness to the region’s business community – a key source of passengers and revenues.

“However, where schedules have been favourable, aircraft have been flying up to 99%full. This provides us with strong evidence of demand for flights from Doncaster Sheffield.

“We are already talking to a number of alternative airlines regarding these and other potential new routes and are confident that many will be re-instated in the near future.”

This has been another successful Summer for Doncaster Sheffield Airport in terms of the growing leisure market, with new routes already announced for 2011. Despite today’s news, the Airport remains confident that it can build on its existing business, attracting further new airlines and routes in the coming months.

The Best Laid Plans Of Mice And Men My step father died suddenly in September and I had to go to France to be with my mother and to start winding up his affairs. Obviously, this was a very emotional, unsettling time as well as difficult; trying to communicate with the French authorities – it is over 30 years since I studied French at O level.

While John was never a father figure to me (he married my mother just 10 years ago), I very much ap-preciated him and was constantly challenged by his selfless commitment to my mother; she hadn’t been very well for the whole of their marriage but after a recent stroke John became her full-time carer with only occasional respite breaks. They retired to France five years ago and had a very happy time there; unfortunately the French legal system is not as laid back as life in France is generally thought to be, but is renowned for being very complicated and very long-winded, so I’ll have to go back over a few times over the next year or so while everything gets wound up. I brought my mother back to England and she is now living in a residential care home.

Sometimes life does not always pan out the way you expect – everyone who knew John and my mother assumed that she would die first (she is quite a bit older than John and has several serious medical problems whereas John only suffered from an irregular heartbeat). But one thing I have learnt is that life does not follow our neat, logical expectations.

The Bible tells us: “do not say; ‘tomorrow I will go to a certain city’ but rather; ‘If God wills it, tomorrow I will go to a certain city’”. Clearly, saying the exact words is not the issue but that we adopt the atti-tude that our lives are fragile, that we hold our plans lightly and that we trust that God is ultimately in control. To some this may seem unnerving – acknowledging that we are not the masters of our own destiny – but it should bring us peace. The Bible says: “all things work together for the good of those who love God”, “the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.” and “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

So when things do not work out as we hope, or even expect, we can either react negatively (being an-gry, frightened or panicky) or we can relax and readjust to the new reality knowing that our heavenly Father knows exactly what He’s doing.

While my mother didn’t really want to return to England, the good outcome is that she will now see her grandchildren, she will be able to talk to everyone around her in her native language and she will receive top quality care for the remaining years of her life.
