welcome

By the time you read this, Christmas will have happened, although at the time of writing i still have much to do before the big day!

“Never set limits, go after your dreams, don’t be afraid to push the boundaries and laugh a lot - it’s good for you!” Wise words from Paula Radcli e, in the Olympic year that is drawing to a close. So with 2013 upon us, take a little time to think about YOUR hopes and dreams. Put a plan in place to see if

you can achieve them, just one step at a time and who knows where you’ll end up?

And of course everyone in our magazine has had a dream at one point or another – starting their own businesses to support and serve local people is high on their priorities so don’t forget to support their dreams too

by giving them a call if there’s anything you might need.

Wishingyouapeaceful2013.

EVERY YEAR, JUST after the Christmas Holidays thousands of people start thinking seriously about home improvements. For many the extra cooking and entertaining has underlined the need to improve their kitchen. The Winter sale is the ideal time to spend money on improving your home. But for many people the dream kitchen or bedroom will turn out to be a nightmare. There are so many retailers out there so how do you know who to turn to.

The KBBSA (Kitchen, Bathroom, Bedroom Specialists Association) recommends you deal with their approved members to not only ensure you get a professional job done but also the peace of mind of having your deposit guaranteed. You will find the whole experience far more enjoyable too because you wont be dealing with any Direct salespeople.

If you’re planning a refurbishment, look no further than DC Interiors – a small, family-run business with over 26 years’ experience in the industry and a KBSA approved member for over Fifteen years.

With over 400 styles of kitchens and bedrooms in a wide range of colours, DC Interiors are certain to provide your perfect design.

If you favour a traditional, rustic look for your home, DC Interiors offers a stunning range of farmhouse and

wooden kitchen doors. For a more striking, contemporary look, ask about their high-gloss, vinyl or laminate selections. Whatever you prefer the friendly staff are on hand to help you choose.

People often find it difficult to know where to begin when selecting a new kitchen or bedroom, but DC Interiors will guide you gently through the whole process from the first measurements to the final installation.

You will initially be offered a free, no-obligation design service, where an experienced designer comes to measure your room and discuss ideas with you. The information will then be used to draw up a design that meets your exact specifications. Special requests or awkward room shapes are no problem – DC Interiors offers a bespoke service that makes every kitchen or bedroom unique to your home.

Since forming in 1985, DC Interiors – which has showrooms in Maltby and Edenthorpe – has gained a strong reputation and a loyal customer base, primarily through word-of-mouth. The many thank you cards on display in their showrooms is testament to the hundreds of satisfied customers they have helped over the years, making

them a company you can trust.Unlike many other companies,

DC Interiors manufacture their materials themselves at their Maltby factory. Not only does this give you the freedom to design your room, it also ensures your new kitchen or bedroom is of exceptional quality.

All plumbing, gas and electrical work is completed as part of the fitting, and most projects are completed in two to three days.

The staff at DC Interiors pride themselves on their personal, friendly customer service, with no hard-selling or pressure. ‘We have grown from your recommendations.’ Give them a call today and turn your dream room into reality.n

Don’t Lose YourHome to Care Fees!

01302 710555www.jonessolicitors.co.uk

48 High Street, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6JB

With local authorities now able to recover care fees from individuals entering the care system, many elderly and not so elderly people are looking for ways to protect their estate, to pass it on to their children and avoid it being wiped out by care home fees. However, the concept of “deliberate deprivation” and the risks associated with any divorce and debt of the children receiving the home, means that simply giving away your home to your children is now generally not the best solution. Whilst entering a care home may seem a distant possibility, your current Mirror Wills leaving everything to each other and then to your children will not protect you or your home in the event that you do need to contribute to your care. Our local specialist Wills and Trusts Solicitors can offer you a number of other solutions including a Property Trust Will or Property Protection Trust. These types of trusts can be made by anyone who owns their own home (jointly or alone), who is in a good state of mental health and wishes to protect their assets. They can protect your home for your children or your surviving partner/spouse if you die before them or go into care.

All the proceeds from the evening, which was £100, was donated to ‘help for heroes’. Due to the success of the evening, it is planned to hold it annually.

Pre-school fun atSt Nic’s Nippers

AS I AM writing this i am surrounded by baubles, tinsel, shepherds outfits and the sound of our ‘little angels’ sweetly singing the Baby Jesus to sleep! What a joy and privilege it is to work in a Primary school at this time of year and what a fitting end to a busy term for our school. here are some of the highlights from the last few weeks …

on 7th November we held a special remembrance Assembly where the children were taught about the work of the royal British legion and the significance of the poppy. We held a 2 minute silence and joined in a small act of remembrance.

on 12th November it was great to welcome our parents into school to meet with class teachers to celebrate great progress and to discuss next step individual targets. We are so lucky to have a high adult to pupil ratio and this means that we are able to work with individuals and small groups to overcome hurdles, meet targets and embrace challenge. hard work, but well worth it when we see children flying and loving their learning.

the whole school celebrated a Diwali afternoon on November 13th – lots of crafts and great fun for all! the things we made are displayed in the hall and look really lovely. later in the same week our Key stage 2 children went to see ‘horrible histories’ at the theatre and then enjoyed a visit to the Galleries of Justice.

We started our Christmas celebrations with a visit from a theatre group who performed a play based on ‘the Night Before Christmas’. it was lovely to share this treat with our friends from ranskill school and it put us all in a festive mood!

Andnowtothisterm…LeadershipatMatterseyWe are embarking on a new venture this

term. some of our Y5/6 children have been trained as Young sports leaders and are so keen and enthusiastic about their role in school that we have decided to extend the programme to include leadership in other areas. the focus will be on developing teamwork, respect, tolerance, communication skills, organisational skills and an understanding of what taking on a ‘responsibility’ means – all important skills to take with them to secondary school and beyond!

OurOutdoorCurriculumProject…You may have noticed some work going

on to develop our school grounds. this is a new project and we are excited about the plans. A willow dome has been created and lots of young trees have been planted; we have secured some funding for an outdoor learning hub – so watch this space for further exciting developments.

WrapAroundCareJust a reminder that there is now

complete wrap around care available

for children from the age of two on the school site. Please contact Jennie Lea on: 01777 816714 for details.

A Friendly Church For A Friendly Town Bawtry is a great place to live and work;I love being part of the most successful Community Library in the country, the various coffee mornings that take place and regularlybumping into friends in the High Street, but it’s frustratingnever being able to get tickets for the theatre as they sell out so quickly;aterrificproblem for a little theatre to have.

I think we at BeFC are the New Hall’s longest standing clients – recently celebrating 20 years of weekly services in the Hall. We meet together in an informal atmospherefor Christian worship and to consider the challenges and relevance of the Bible’s teaching in modern Britain. We also share meals, quizzes and celebrations together, go off mountain biking or hiking and arrange trips to local points of interest. It’s encouraging to be part of such a friendly church. At the start of this New Year, I encourage you to seriously consider what Jesus Christ did and taught: was he truly God become man (as we all celebrate at Christmas)? Did he really die but come back to life (as Easter proclaims)? If so, how should that impact our lives? Why not start 2013 with a serious intention to seek God?Come along to the New Hall any Sunday just after 10:00am; you’ll be made very welcomeand I’m sure you’ll enjoy the multi-media interactive service. On the next page are details of some of our regular and upcoming activities, please feel free to join in with any of them; we’d love to see you and you can test if we really are a friendly church for a friendly town. The rock Folk club, Maltby- Folk for a Fiver.the rock Folk Club in maltby kicks off in its new guise with Folk for a Fiver on 11 January followed on Friday 25 January by local folk heroes ray hearne and Ciaran Boyle. ray, one time steelworker has been writing and performing for many years, involved in amongst other things the BBC radio ballads. Ciaran, although living in south Yorkshire spent every summer of his childhood with family in ireland where he learnt to play the bodhran. he and ray spark with fun, play together beautifully and for my money Ciaran will sing you a heart-rending irish lament as good as anyone. one of the brilliant things about musicians playing local gigs is the friends and family that also make up the audience in this case its very noisy, supportive and there is plenty of singing – when Ciaran forgets his words the audience (AKA his mum) carry the song on ! IT’S THAT TIME of year again when we’re all reflecting on the past year and looking to the future. it’s a time to focus on the changes we want to make and resolve to follow through on these by making our New Year resolutions.

i’m sure lots of you reading this will have decided that 2013 is the year for you to become healthier and improve your fitness. At Bluebell Wood we know that this can be a battle, and hitting the streets at the end of a busy day can be a chore, however, running for your local children’s hospice could be just the motivationyou need.

Bluebell Wood Children’s hospice cares for local children who have a shortened life expectancy. By running for ‘team Bluebell’ you could help us continue to provide this valuable service which costs £3 million per year and receives no statutory government funding.

eleven-year-old oliver suffers from a rare genetic condition called smA type

2 and has been accessing the respite services at Bluebell Wood since it opened in 2008. oliver always has a smile on his face and loves football, playing on his Ps3 and spending time with his best friend Connor. During his visits at Bluebell Wood he became friends with lilly.

the very gorgeous lilly who is six years-old visits the hospice as she suffers from Koolen syndrome which means she has severe learning difficulties, epilepsy, worsening visual impairment and deteriorating mobility issues. mum vikky

says; “We come to Bluebell as a family for quality time as that is rare in our lives.

“it gives us the chance to get a full night’s sleep as her endless medication and continuous therapy is taken over by the care team, and we know no matter what the future holds for lilly they will always be there for us.”

the children inspired international Football referee howard Webb, who is a patron for Bluebell Wood, to dig out his running shoes and run for the hospice. howard said; “i had a great time meeting lilly and oliver and always feel very humbled when visiting Bluebell Wood.

“the work they do is fantastic and i’m honoured to be a patron. they have inspired me to get my running shoes back on again to show my support and i’m urging others to do the same and help raise funds for this amazing place.”

think you’d like to join team Bluebell? Why not sign up to a fun run, 10K or even a half marathon?

our fabulous fund-raising team will be behind you all the way. they will provide you with inspirational stories, top fund-raising tips, sponsorship forms and even a free Bluebell Wood running vest!

Go to www.bluebellwood.org/running.php to sign up now or find out further information about local runs in the area, alternatively call us on 01909 517365.

You can also show your support by following us on Facebook: Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice or Twitter:@BluebellwoodCH

SINCE OUR LAST article in this magazine we have to record with sadness the death of two of our long serving members, Bill scollay and reg Barradell. Bill was a founder member of the Club in the mid 1990’s and reg was recently President. they will both be missed by many, not least by their families to whom we send oursincere condolences.

on a brighter note we are pleased to welcome a few new members to the Club and we hope that they will enjoy friendship and fellowship within Probus – not to mention some interesting talks. Probus is for retired professional and businessmen and we meet on the 2nd and 4th thursdays of each month at the millstone hotel, tickhill at 10.00 for 10.30am. Coff ee is available on arrival and after the meeting many members enjoy a convivial half hour (or so) in the bar with some staying on to lunch. if you

think this would suit you come along as a guest to any meeting and see if you can resist the temptation to join! our programme for the next three months is as follows:

10th January. AGM followed by “refl ecting on China” by steve Payne.

24th January. “History of the Alum Works at Grimsby” by John Mitchell

14th February. “What they don’t teach you at Medical school” by Dr M. Wilson.

28th February. “Off a’s Dyke National Trail” by Andrew Guy.

14th March. “Herman Goering – the renaissance Man” by r Wilkinson.

28th March. “Annual Ladies Lunch. (members and guests only).

LOCAL BAWTRY GIRL tina thorton, manager at lux hairdresser has had a temporary change in career. tina was asked to model for the cover of Adele Carrington’s new book Denial – the varcolac Journals.

“i was looking for someone normal, the main character Faith is attractive and confi dent. tina fi t the brief perfectly and she was just a natural in front of the camera.” Adele said.

Denial – the varcolac Journals is the new British vampire novel, a Bridget Jones with teeth. the main character Faith thomlinson is in her early thirties and far from perfect. the book follows a year in her life as she comes to terms with the fact she’s been bitten. if you liked twilight or true Blood you are sure to love this book.

“i was a little nervous at fi rst,” tina admitted, “but steve and his team were so professional and i just submerged myself in the character.”

When we asked her if this could be a permanent change tina laughed. “i’m a hairdresser, i love my job and working at lux. i’ve been asked to sign a few copies of the book, but i’ve not had any off ers from hollywood as yet!”

Denial, the varcolac Journals is part of the Battle of the Books for lex, you can have a look at the Battle on facebook at www.facebook.com/battleofthebooksforlex or buy the book from waterstones online.

When you have done, why not pop into lux hairdressers inside the Crown hotel and get tina to sign your copy while you have your haircut.

Tickhill & District Lionsupdate CAN I START by wishing you all a happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our grand Christmas draw which was held on the 11th of December. to the companies who provided prizes, to the many people who donated items for the draw, to the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell tickets, and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets – thank you! if you were one of the many lucky winners then we’ve probably already been in touch, but you should fi nd a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale.

During December we helped santa visit over a thousand homes within the tickhill & District area and gave out hundreds of Christmas cards. thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations.

At tickhill & District lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs, so you can be sure that every penny you donate will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year.

so thank you once again from Tickhill & District Lions and from all of the people that your donations will help!

I GREW UP in a house that had very few books, with the exception of the Bible. Unlike my wife who grew up surrounded by books, who on family holidays spent hours in secondhand bookshops whilst her parents browsed the shelves, i never had that joy of encountering literary delights.

i have made up for it since as our house is fi lled with books on a variety of subjects, and now i have ventured on my birthday into the world of e-books.

it is 75 years since the publication of a book that is now the subject of a trilogy of fi lms, the fi rst being released shortly in the UK. it is of course the book the hobbit, the fi lm’s fi rst part is entitled ‘An unexpected journey’. the tale of Bilbo Baggins who is dragged from the comfort of his home and thrust into a dangerous

set of adventures with strange people and even more bizarre creatures is a story worth getting your hands on, no matter what age you are.

As we celebrate Christmas and take tentative steps into a New Year, we encounter in the Bible an even more extraordinary ‘ unexpected journey’, that of God coming to adventure with us in Jesus. in facing life’s twists and turns, joys and sorrows, hope and despair, we have someone who shares all of this with us each step of the way. No matter how ‘unexpected’ the journeys we have and will take in Jesus we have a companion not just for now but always.

May you and yours have a Peaceful, Joyful and safe Christmas and New Year.
