American Victory• The first battles of

the war. On April 19th, 1775, the British attempted to raid colonial militia supplies from Concord and capture Patriot leaders in Lexington. The British had to retreat back to Boston, where the militia surrounded them.

Battle of Trenton: American Victory• Washington needed

a victory to motivate his soldiers. On Dec. 25, 1776, Washington and his army crossed the Delaware river and marched to Trenton, NJ. They surprised the Hessians there and captured or killed 900 of them, gaining needed supplies.

Battle of Princeton:American Victory

• On Jan 2, 1777, Washington marched his men on to Princeton, NJ. The Continental Army tricked the British by leaving their campfires burning while they attacked. The British were forced to retreat, re-motivating the Continental Army.

Battle of Saratoga: American Victory

• In Oct. 1777, British Gen. John Burgoyne arrived near Albany, NY outnumbered by the Patriot troops. Gen. Gates army won the battle and forced the British to surrender. This battle was the turning point of the Revolutionary War. It convinced France and Spain to help us.

took the war to the British forts on the western frontier. At the Battle of Vincennes. Clark forced A British General to surrender by pretending to have a larger army than really he did! Clark’s victories gave the Americans a claim to all of the frontier lands

Battle of Camden: British Victory

• In Aug 1780, American Gen. Gates tried to drive the British out of South Carolina. The Americans were not ready to fight and many ran away at the beginning of the battle. Most of the southern army was captured or killed. American spirits were very low.

Battle of Cowpens: American Victory

• In Jan 1781, The

Americans fought

against a British force

in South Carolina. In an

hour- long battle the

British were forced to

retreat. This Battle

helped set the stage for

the victory at Yorktown.

Battle of Yorktown: American

Victory• In October 1781, British

Gen. Cornwallis moved

his army to Yorktown,

VA. Washington used

his army, a French

army and the French

navy to trap Gen.

Cornwallis and force

him to surrender. This

battle effectively ended

the war.
