Welcome to our newest SPBVA members:Enriquez Family of Escondido

As the year 2012 comes to a close, Ihope everyone’s was a great one andthat the New Year will bring all goodfortune and health. The year 2012 hasbeen an up and down year for Califor-nia State Parks and the SPBVA─not knowing if we were going to be closeddown or not. Thankfully, all parks havebeen taken off the chopping block forthe time being and it has been businessas usual for us.

On December 2, 2012, we held theannual re-enactment of the Battle ofSan Pasqual. You could not have askedfor better weather, for the day wasbright and sunny after threatening torain. There are too many people to

thank individually, but a big THANKYOU to all the re-enactors, the volun-teers, and the park staff. I would alsolike to give a special THANK YOU tothe Boy Scouts who directed traffic inthe parking area, and JROTC fromKearny High School for their participa-tion in the flag raising ceremony.

To all who filled out the Save OurState Park postcards, THANK YOU.We did get a response to them; this ef-fort did let the politicians and people inSacramento know that the citizens ofCalifornia do not like it when you messwith their parks.

Keep an eye out in Battlelines for up-coming events throughout the year.

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

Off the Shelf... by Shirley Buskirk

It will be 2013 when you read this, but I’m writ-ing it just seven days before Christmas. I just putmy cards in the mail and tomorrow I start shop-ping. Next week, the house will be full of people, each with a stocking hung over the fireplace. Thisyear there will be 17 and the recipients range inage from 10 to 91. They come from Oregon, Ari-zona and from Germany comes Patrick, an ex-change student. When the floor is completely cov-ered with discarded wrapping paper, we will allleave. A few go home to rest, while others head fortheir in-laws and a big turkey dinner. I’ll join theother half of the family in San Diego, where wefeast on homemade ravioli. It’s traditional─and delicious.

You are probably wondering what this has to dowith the bookstore at the Battlefield. Well, I’ll tellyou. The State has given San Pasqual a greatChristmas present─a promise to stay open for two

more years. We were scheduled to close July 1,2012, so I’m not sure just when that two yearsends. But I’m hopeful that something will come upby that time to keep us open permanently.

And the best present, as far as I’m concerned, was that I was told I could reorder all those bookswe’ve run out of. Instead of the normal 69 itemsfor sale, we are down to 37. So, when the newbudget begins in January, I’ll be busy restockingthose shelves. Books about history─about the Indians, the Spanish occupation, Mexico’sindependence and California as part of the UnitedStates─books about the war and the battle fought here─biographies, children’s books, medallions and miniature cannons, maps and documents. There’s lots more, but you’ll have to wait foranother issue─I’ve run out of room.

Happy 2013! And start planning your trip to ournewly restocked bookstore.
