This is the scene where Vicky was using the mask given by Joker, as the poison gas already spread out to the whole church. Again, they used three-point lighting, with the intention of giving the sense of depth while at the same time, contrasting specifi-cally on Vicky’s face. The short shot method of capturing the scene was also used, to make a deep space between her and the background, showing what happened to her and her surrounding at the same time.

Additionally, I also put some other movie reviews to look at, such as Maria Full of Grace and Love me if you dare, in order to give more knowledge of style and approach in the different kind of films.

Hopefully, these will be a useful reference and could give a good understanding towards the processes and approaches in the remaking of the scene from the original film.

Batman

Director : Tim BurtonSets : Anton Furst & Nigel PhelpsStarring : Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl

At beggining, the film is showing the darkness of Gotham City, which have high crime rate and is filled with corrupted police.

Millionaire Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton) witnesses his parents' murder by a criminal as a child, and, as a result, grows up to track and apprehend criminals in the guise of Batman.

In this film, crime lord Grissom decides to dispose a troublesome hench-man, Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson), by sending him on a fool's errand to a chemical factory. There, Napier battles Batman and winds up falling into a vat of toxic chemicals.

Napier lives, but the fixed grin he has acquired as a result of the chemi-cals leads him to call himself, the Joker. Later, the Joker kills Grissom, and then sets his sights on courting Vicky Vale (Kim Basinger), a photographer who was dating Wayne at that time.

The rest of the movie rotates around the Joker's plan to poison the city's cosmetics supply and his abduction of Vicky.

These are the images from scene that i chose as my scene selections. In these scenes, Vicky Vale was going to Flugelheim Museum, to meet Bruce Wayne, although in fact, Joker was the one that invited her. The scene continued when she got an unex-pected present, which was actually from Joker. In th box of the present, there was a face mask along with a note that tell her to use the mask urgently. Then, as soon as she does that, poison gas spread across the whole museum from a ventilation, which causes everyone inside the museum to start falling down. Luckily, Vicky was protected from the poison gas due to the face mask.

The setting of the scene acts in the museum, which is really detailed in terms of materials and lightings. In the camera shot, the combination of deep space and frontality was used, although mostly the frontality staging was used as to capture the expression of Vicky. Deep space was used to show the situation and atmosphere inside the museum.

Furthermore, the three-point lighting is used more in this scene as the short shot was used less frequently. Additionaly, low-key lighting was still used in some part of the scene to represent the dark side of Gotham City.

Moreover, in relation to the costumes such as Vicky’s clothes illustrates that the scene was taken during winter. Whereas, the formal clothes that the waiter used, represents the high class of the restaurant.

Film Review + Analysis

Maria Full of Grace and Love me if you dare can be categorized as international films,

both of them offer magnificent storylines, with different visuals and meanings. This

essay will concentrate on reviewing and analyzing these two films; Maria Full of Grace

and Love me if you dare. Maria Full of Grace is the film that will give inspiration to

many people, it’s a simple story but it’s something that happens every day. On the

other hand, Love me if you dare is a fairy tale film, that portrays a childhood dream.

Furthermore, this essay will also compare these two films in order to discover the

differences and similarities they may have.

Maria full of Grace is a serious drama movie by Joshua Marston; it is a joint Colombian

and American film. It has already won many awards in many occasions, especially for

the performance of Catalina Sandino Moreno in the movie. The story focuses on a 17

years old pregnant woman, María Álvarez that has to work for her family’s survivor.

She accepted the fact that she has to become a mule for drug trader which is involved

great risks. She was then assigned to send a package to a customer in New Jersey.

However, she found New Jersey as a striking place with a lot of prospects for his

children’s future and well-being. Without much hesitation, she decides to live in New

Jersey.

On contrast, Love me if you dare is a French romantic comedy movie, directed by

Yann Samuell. It’s story about Julien Janvier (Guillaume Cannet) and Sophie Konwal-

sky (Marion Cotillard) that are in love with each other. They have already built their

friendship since childhood. Then, they have been playing a game that involves a

series of challenges of dares, in which when anyone held a toy, has the right to instruct

the other to certain challenges or task and the one instructed has to duly obey. The

game is still played even until they grew much older and over time, it become more

dangerous. The game also has an effect on their love relationship, because at times

they would have to choose between love and their life. In the end, just like the usual

fairy tale films, they ended up together happily ever after in the best possible way they

could have considering their tough circumstances.

In the technological aspects, Yann Samuell realizes the limitation for the current

modern approach, he counters with a digital technology, and creating visual effect that

are more engaging than the character itself (Roberts, 2008). Love me if you dare uses

animations in some parts of the film to illustrate the children’s fantasies, which I

believe, effectively portrays such fantasies. Moreover, the interesting part of that

animation was a multitude of cardboard cutouts and idyllic fantasy setting that were

employed to deliver us to a typical children’s fantasy and makes it look as if games are

serious, just like those kids and every other things possible (Cameroon, 2004) . They

also made use of music background frequently; to make it more entertaining. On

opposite, Maria Full of Grace is a conventional film, which focuses more on the acting

of their actors. Unlike the previous, this has almost no background music, they do use

a number of natural environments for its background and was probably done so to

create a comfortable natural flow or in order to allow the audiences to concentrate

more to the film.

The set in Maria Full of Grace was started at a small town in Colombia. The buildings

are all low, one or two story, and is mostly made by poured concrete and cinder block

line of laundry stretching from one to other (Marston, 2001). It shows the tough

economical situation there as most of the people there are working in industrial flower

plantation.Maria has to live in small house with her grandmother, mother, sister, and

infant nephew. It is a different situation that off Julien and Sophie’s life. They live in

modern city in France, Julien is a successful businessman, and Sophie is the wife of

a famous football player, which shows their wealthy background and living conditions.

Next, in the social aspect, both films have a likeness to each other. They are doing

what people think are wrong. Maria prefers to go to dark life as become a mule which

is against the law, rather than follow her family’s advice to work in flower plantation.

The same situation was faced by Julien and Sophie, as they continued their game

even when they are no longer kids anymore, despite the protests from everyone

around them (Nusair, 2004).

There also some narrative similarities in both films. Maria reluctantly becomes a mule

to earn money to give her family a better life. She sacrifices herself to do that danger-

ous and risky work. The parallel situation is also faced by Julien, when he chooses to

follow his father’s desire rather than his love. However, at the end of the films both of

them ended up following what their heart told them to do.

In conclusion, both films have their own special characteristics. Maria Full of Grace is

a meaningful film about life and could be an inspiration to many people. It shows that

life is tough and happens in everyday, so we have to be strong to face it. Also, in the

technological aspects, it was kept to the minimum. Whereas, Love me if you dare is a

fairy tale movie about love. It is entertaining and appealing at the same time, equipped

with contradictions, paradox, irony, and cynicism (Roberts, 2008). Although they were

using different technologies from different world and culture, they do have some

similarities in their narrative and social aspect of the films.

Task 4

This my initial mapping for the Batman scene that i choose for Batman. I represent the movement of the main character, which is Vicky Vale, by using the line, and i used different colur for her, to differentiate her to other people. I also used music notes to illustrate the backsound in the film.

This images behind is my first mapping for my task 4. I used handdrawing to experiment with light and shadow. Moreover i used small mapping of the location plan behind the images to explain about the position of the main character, which is Vicky Vale.

At first, i drew some mapping of what happened in that scene. I noted every movement of the character. Therefore, it gave me good understanding about the scene, which really helped me when i started to created my final mapping.

At some stages, i tried to use perpective view of the museum for my mapping. I also experimented on the usage of the music notes as the illustrations of Vicky’s movement. The music notes are used to represent the background sound of the the scene which starts from slow music, and then changes to high-note music when the poison gas spread across the whole museum. However, this mapping did not really work well as it is too basic, and did not really represent the movement of the character.

Moreover, i use the music notes as an abstract interpretation of the background sound of the movie. In addition, it is also used to show the movement of the main char-acter (Vicky Vale) across the room in the scene.

The moment i find myself struggling by using the mapping in perspective view, i decided to use the plan view instead. I still uses the music notes, but in a more professional way. Thus, this way of map-ping works really well, as it could show more if Vicky Vale’s movement in a more abstarct way.

At the end of the day, i chose to use the images above as Vicky’s face, as i thought it could best represents the expressions of Vicky in that scene.

Then, after i chosed Vicky’s face illustration, i tried to sketch some possibilities for my storyboard. I tried to draw a storyboard that focuses on Vicky’s facial expression while also playing with the light and shadow. In this stage, i am still figuring out on how my story board will be.

Assignment 3Re-Imagined Set

By using low-key lighting, the scene emphasizes the darkness of Gotham City. Deep space is used to reflect the distance between Vicky to the museum. Moreover, the clothing that Vicky uses showed that the scene was taken in winter.

Deep space was used to reflect the situation inside the museum, which shows the detailed luxury objects and particles in the museum. The artificial light inside the museum gives out yellowish background effect to the wall.

The three-point lighting is used to highlight the expres-sion of Vicky and the receptionist face. Therefore, by just using low-key lighting in the background, the color of concrete wall looks more concentrated. The frontality staging is also used in order to focus on the conversation between them. In addition, the formal suits worn by the waiters shows that she’s at a high class restaurant.

With the purpose of focusing to Vicky; the three-point lighting was used in this scene. Short shot camera was used in this scene to highlight on Vicky’s bored expression.

The yellowish color affect at Vicky’s face, was used to represent her reaction at that point of time, as she’s surprised at the unexpected present. The shallow space was also used in this scene, in order to mainly focus on the depth of the character’s face and expressions rather than her surrounding background.

The three-point lighting was used in this scene. The main light was highlighting the face mask, as it was the main object in this frame. While, the other light was used to create a shadow effect. They also took short shot camera angle, as to intensify the focus on the notes and the face mask.

In this scene, the artificial lighting reflects yellowish background effect on the wall. Moreover, frontality staging was used in this scene, in order to emphasize the ventilation, where the gas came out and how the gas spread across the room.

Again, they used three-point lighting, with the intention of giving the sense of depth while at the same time, contrasting specifically on Vicky’s face. The short shot method of capturing the scene was also used, to make a deep space between her and the background, showing what happened to her and her surrounding at the same time.

In my final storyboard, hand rendering was used as it could broaden the scene’s atmo-sphere and the lightings of the scene as many methods could be used to illustrate the differ-ent kind of effects used for the scene. Then, a small map was provided to show the move-ment and also to provide a rough location of

where the setting took place.

Design Concept

My design concept is to create a space that could reflect the darkness of Gotham City and the silentness of the museum (which reflects the intensity of the scene), as i want to keep this approach from the original one. As a result, i decided to design a church as it has similar silentness of the original scene. The other reason is because the church is a public space, which is a mandatory component for my scene, as there will be interaction with other people.

I create a yellowish light effect to give a sacred sense to the church and on other hand, it also represents the darkness of Gotham City. More-over, i used glass panels as windows and roofs, as it will reflect objects inside the church, that could make it more spaceous. In addition, the yellowish light effect that penetrates outside the building through the glass panel, is likely to cause the church to stand out from other build-ing.

Furthermore, i added a second floor, which will be the main area where my scene was taken from as to follow the original scene one, and also to create more movement inside the church.

I then research about lighting and shadow, and found some interesting images. Tadao Ando’s Church (the image on the top right hand corner) caught my attention, as the cross lighting from the wall looks original and shows me the feel of a true church, this is also one of the reason why i pick a church as the location of my set.

In here, i tried to explore the possibilties of using a restaurant for my set as similar to the original scene one. However, I decided against it as I prefer something different but still able to keep the originality of the scenes. I also thought about using an outdoor settings but i ruled this out due to the gas emission which requires a constricted space rather than an open space.

At first, after i decided to create a modern church, i brainstormed some ideas for my church plan. I tried different shapes to obtain a suitable floor plan, from rectangle, square until circle, in which it gives me some ideas of how my floor plan would like.

Then, by playing with the overlapping of rectangles, i found a floor plan, that i thought will be perfect for my scene. Moreover, i finalized it and already has the idea on how the interior will look like, such as the placement of benches.

After i got an idea about the design of my plan, i drew some sketches of how the church will be like. I tried to design a church that has a unique shape and modern outlook, as i want to make a different space to the original one. I ended up creating a diagonal-like glass panel roof, as I was quite inspired by the shape from the Louvre Museum.

After i decided on my floor plan, i chose to make a small scale model of (1:100), as shown in the images on the left. I also put some small furnitures and pillars, to see in order to display the interiors. Moreover, i also played with the shadows that are casted from the ceiling frame. However, it still requires some changes, because i thought it would be better to create a second floor, in order to make more movement for the main character (Vicky Vale).

These are the exterior views of the church that were used for my scene. Frame 1

These are my final storyboard. I still develop the small mapping approach as it is really useful in representing the character’s position in the build-ing. Here, i uses a combination of deep space and frontality staging. In which, deep space is used to display the atmosphere inside the museum and the darkness of Gotham City, while the frontality is used when i want to focus more on Vicky’s facial expression. Furthermore, the three-point lighting was used in almost all the frames, and only the first frame uses low-key lighting for the purpose of reflecting the darkness of Gotham City.

Moreover, the yellowish light effect-was used to give represent the holiness an peacefulness of the church. In addition, I changed Vicky’ style of clothing as somewhat more casual and modern, and for such instance will be the usage of cardi-gan.

The scene is showing Vicky’s view to the Church, the place where she will meet Bruce Wayne. By using low-key lighting, the scene emphasizes the darkness of Gotham City. The lighting from inside the church was used to focus on it as the main attraction. Deep space methodology is used to reflect the distance between the museum to their surroundings.

The image above is taken when Vicky was going inside the church and talking to the church staff. The three-point lighting is used to highlight the expression of Vicky and the church staff. The frontality staging is also used in order to focus on the conversation between them. The artificial light inside the museum gives out yellowish background effect onto the floor. The glass panel also reflects objects inside the church. Moreover Vicky used modern casual clothes which shows this scene was set only recently

This scene is viewing Vicky’s boredom while waiting for Bruce Wayne. To fulfil the purpose of focusing to Vicky; the three-point lighting was used in this scene. Short shot camera was used in this scene to highlight on Vicky’s bored expression. Thus, the height of the chair illustrates how far Vicky is, from her surroundings.

The three-point lighting was used in this scene. The main light was highlighting the action of Vicky while receiving a gift from stranger, as it was the main issue in this frame. Additionally, the other light was used to create a shadow effect of the background, such as for the glass panel.

In this scene, low key lighting was used describe the inevitable evil-based situation that was going to happen. Moreover, frontality staging was used in this scene, in order to emphasize on the ventilation, where the gas came out from and how the gas was spread across the room.

This is the scene where Vicky was using the mask given by Joker, as the poison gas already spread out to the whole church. Again, they used three-point lighting, with the intention of giving the sense of depth while at the same time, contrasting specifically on Vicky’s face. The short shot method of capturing the scene was also used, to make a deep space between her and the background, showing what happened to her and her surrounding at the same time.

This is the scene captured when Vicky was going upstairs to find a seat while waiting for Bruce Wayne. In here, deep space was used to reflect the situation and the materi-ality of the objects inside the church. The low key lighting was used in this scene in order to give a sense of peacefulness to the church. Additionally, the yellow lighting fixture in the stair’s wall, emphasizes the stair as its main object in this representa-tion.

The images was captured when Vicky open the gift, which was actually from Joker. The lighting was focused to the mask which emits yellowish effect to the background. They also took short shot camera angle, as to intensify the focus on the notes and the face mask.
