Introduction

' The 2015 Bath International Music Festival brings you music from some of the world’s finest musicians, presented against the backdrop of our stunning world heritage city'

We present glorious music in iconic settings such as Bath Abbey with Stile Antico, and we also take you to lesser known gems such as

Cleveland Pools by the River Avon, where Red Note Ensemble perform a compelling mix of Renaissance and contemporary music for brass. The whole city centre will be taken over on our opening night for the massive Party in the City, with almost 2000 musicians performing in over 40 venues, and spilling out on to the streets of Bath.

Bath International Music Festival has been known for embracing every kind of music-making from the time when Yehudi Menuhin was Artistic Director onwards. We are proud to continue this tradition with great classical, jazz, world, folk and popular music in this year’s line-up. We promote a balance of today and tomorrow with the leading pianist Steven Osborne as our Artist in Residence, vocal legend Willard White, and star organist Thomas Trotter juxtaposed with young stars of the future. We present prizewinning ensembles such as the Cremona Quartet and the Dunedin Consort, legendary performers such as South African horn player and civil rights activist Hugh Masekela and music by The Hot Sardines jazz band from New York and the fabulous Molotov Jukebox that will get you dancing in the aisles.

Bath is also known for exploring work that shatters boundaries between different disciplines. In 2015 this includes a rare performance of Mike Westbrook’s The Westbrook Blake, combining thrilling jazz with a celebration of William Blake’s mighty poetry, and classical harpist Catrin Finch in a lyrical collaboration with African kora master Seckou Keita. Will Gregory, one half of pop duo Goldfrapp, brings one of his astounding film and live music projects to Komedia, He Who Gets Slapped.

The 2015 programme has been created by James Waters of Festival & Events International (classical)

and Serious (jazz and world) and also draws on a number of partnerships both local and national. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together!

We are delighted to have attracted some of the world’s finest soloists and groups in 2015. They include our Festival Artist in Residence, Steven Osborne, one of the

great pianists of his generation, vocal legend Willard White and world famous organist Thomas Trotter. We also have prizewinning ensembles such as the Cremona Quartet and early music vocal ensemble Stile Antico plus Red Note, Scotland’s leading contemporary music ensemble, for a very special event at Cleveland Pools — the UK’s only surviving Georgian lido.

2012 BBC Young Musician of the Year Laura van der Heijden performs with the European Union Chamber Orchestra; Peter Manning and Renato Balsadonna celebrate Schubert’s repertoire for violin and piano; leading harpsichord player and Bach authority John Butt plays Bach’s Goldberg Variations and also performs an all Bach programme with the Dunedin Consort; brilliant young performers are featured in a series of exceptional lunchtime concerts, and Iford Arts create a sparkling evening of opera directed by Oliver Gooch.

jazz band in New York The Hot Sardines; Orphy Robinson’s Black Top; Jason Rebello performing with Gwilym Simcock; Gwyneth Herbert; Matthew Shipp and Michael Bisio.

The Westbrook Blake is a rare performance of this iconic masterpiece, with Mike Westbrook, Glad Day and Bath Camerata. Emily Portman, a rising star of English folksong, presents a new collaboration with Sam Sweeney from Bellowhead, and we have a host of other folk events in venues across North East Somerset. The beautiful sounds of the Welsh harp and West African kora are brought together by Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita. Alash, masters of Tuvan throat singing from Siberia, give a rare UK performance. Will Gregory, co-founder of Goldfrapp, and his long-term collaborator Tony Orrell, perform live music to a screening of the 1924 silent movie He Who Gets Slapped.

Also on offer we have a guaranteed party with the Tropical-Gypsy-Dance sounds of Natalia Tena (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter) and her band Molotov Jukebox.

All that and a 'bring your family' event with the fabulous House Gospel Choir at Komedia — House anthems and gospel made for dancing, as seen at Glastonbury and Latitude.

Party in the CityVarious Venues in Bath City Centre From 5.30pm Free Event

The 2015 Festival kicks off with a bang as Party in the City explodes around Bath. Our legendary opening night is back and bigger than ever with over 40 venues and hundreds of performances. Set in and around the city’s world-famous townscape, expect to hear everything from swing, soul and blues to classical, ska, jazz, rock, pop and more.

The free party begins at the Abbey with the annual Bath Festivals schools commission and procession — a spectacular trip 'Down the Rabbit Hole’ with hundreds of local children. Then look out for our secret performances, exciting collaborations and the lively performers of Bath’s Natural Theatre Company, leading guided tours throughout the evening. The night reaches a climax with headline acts including the foot-stomping Bite The Buffalo, Jamma de Samba and the return of Emergency Exit Arts — this year bringing their spectacular Turbo the Disco Turtle. Expect the unexpected...

The wonderful museums and galleries in Bath join us again as part of the national celebrations of Museums at Night.

Down the Rabbit Hole: Schools Procession and CommissionProcession starts in Southgate at 5.30pm leading to the Abbey for a 6pm performance Free Event

Opening the Music Festival with a joyous journey into children’s imaginations, this year’s Schools Procession and Commission are going ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ as part of our cross festival celebrations of the 150th Anniversary of Alice in Wonderland.

Local school children have created special costumes with artist Edwina Bridgeman and will process through the streets of Bath leading you into the Abbey. Here you will be greeted by our choir of school children exploring their own Wonderlands in song, created especially for Bath by the children working with musicians Zoe Palmer and Genevieve Wilkins. Linking this together will be rhythms from musicians from Action On Hearing Loss Educational Day Services. Journey with us and discover a new world!

Rachmaninov Etudes-Tableaux Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition

Master pianist and festival Artist in Residence Steven Osborne launches the classical programme with a performance of Russian virtuoso fireworks. Rachmaninov’s fiendishly virtuosic Etudes-Tableaux paint huge romantic canvases in great sweeps of piano sound. Osborne has paired them with Mussorgsky’s ever-popular musical tour of a picture gallery: gnomes, witches, children at play and ballet-dancing chicks all spring into vivid, sparkling life.

Steven Osborne’s performances up and down the country have confirmed his pre-eminence among British pianists. His brilliance, integrity and very wide repertoire have long marked him out; but what now emerges most strongly is the unique magic of his sound combined with a profound musical intelligence — Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist of the Year 2013 citation.

Enjoy music from the Georgian period while you explore one of Bath’s hidden gems: the lovely Capability Brown landscape garden at Newton Park. Bath Spa University presents the Vauxhall Players in an outdoor gala concert of music from composers with Bath connections, as well as celebrated visitors such as Arne and Haydn. There’ll also be a rare performance of Lampe’s The Dragon of Wantley — an uproarious tale of scarlet women, country bumpkins and a less-than-terrifying dragon. Hear for yourself why it became the second most popular English opera of the 18th century! Complete with strolling players and dramatic vignettes, all performed in beautiful period costume.

This is a promenade event. Audiences are welcome to bring folding chairs and rugs. The event will go ahead in wet weather using alternative venues at Newton Park.

Phil King has toured the UK and throughout Europe, with several appearances on BBC Radio 2. He also composes for theatre, dance and film, including work with the Bristol Old Vic and Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Masters of Tuvan throat singing, award-winning Alash Ensemble have toured internationally, astonishing audiences with a vocal technique that allows one singer to produce multiple pitches simultaneously. The group accompanies its songs with traditional instruments, from flutes and string instruments to Mongolian harps. The music is rooted in a spiritual tradition focused on the landscape and natural forces of Alash’s home region in the far south of Siberia.

Take a blustery brass front line, add salty stride piano and a front woman with the attitude and style of a 30s cabaret diva and you have The Hot Sardines in a seashell.

Bandleader and pianist Evan 'Bibs’ Palazzo and lead singer Miz Elizabeth combine with the Sardine ensemble of powerhouse musicians to create a sound that’s steeped in hot jazz and gypsy swing: a taste of the Prohibition era through the Great Depression, WWII and beyond. The outfit encompasses brass, a rhythm section led by a stride-piano virtuoso in the Fats Waller vein, and Miz Elizabeth’s singing — a voice that harkens back to another era, yet feels refreshingly modern. Fusing musical influences from New York, Paris and New Orleans; The Hot Sardines play hot jazz as it was in the era when live music was king.

BBC Folk Award winning singer/songwriter Emily Portman and one of the UK’s most sought-after folk multi-instrumentalists Sam Sweeney join together to create a specially devised show.

Emily Portman’s debut album The Glamoury received two BBC Folk Award nominations and overwhelming critical acclaim. Taking on folk as a contemporary art form, she weaves rich narratives into a brooding realm of twisted folktales: The Daily Telegraph has described her as The rising star of traditional English folksong. To call Sam Sweeney just a 'fiddle player’ is to do him an injustice. He’s been playing violin since he was 6 and is now a highly respected multi-instrumentalist; a member of Bellowhead and the exciting new band Leveret.

Two remarkable artists create a true Festival occasion — expect an intimate evening of folk music at its finest, weaving together songs and tunes with sensitivity and deft musicianship.

Violetta’s Party Iford Arts brings opera to town

A Sunday evening in Bath’s Banqueting Hall — or a glittering soirée in 19th century Paris’s most fashionable salon? Iford Arts invites you to an operatic evening with Violetta Valéry: the Lady of the Camelias, Verdi’s La Traviata — sung by Alinka Kozari whose sensational debut in the role at Iford was described as 'a Violetta to take your breath away'. Among her guests will be tenor Christopher Turner, mezzo Marianne Vidal, and bass-baritone Szymon Wach. This concert is curated and accompanied on piano by the founding music director of Iford Arts Productions, Oliver Gooch — conductor of the March 2015 Raymond Gubbay production of Madame Butterfly at the Royal Albert Hall. The programme will include favourite operatic arias and ensembles, plus a few surprises — all enhanced by a chorus of young singers from Bath Spa University working with Iford Arts in an exciting new collaboration.

A stunning shared musical journey with two world class virtuosos — Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and West African kora player Seckou Keita. The harp occupies a vital place in the cultures of both Senegal and Wales. The West African harp — the kora — is made from a dried gourd and fishing line; the Welsh harp is one of the most potent icons of a nation steeped in music. Both nations share a centuries-old bardic tradition of intricate oral history, expressed through music, verse and song.

From Casamance in Senegal, Seckou Keita has built a formidable reputation as a brilliant live performer with stacks of charisma (Lucy Duran, BBC Radio 3). Catrin Finch is one of Wales’s leading international musical ambassadors. Both artists demonstrate their radical and adventurous musical spirit with this wedding of Welsh and West African musical culture — a collaboration that won the Songlines Music Award.

Bartosz Woroch is one of Europe’s most exciting young string players. Bach’s Partitas are one of the glories of the solo violin repertoire, and here the B minor Partita is beautifully balanced by the austere yet expressive music of Paul Hindemith and Prokofiev’s brilliantly inventive and gloriously tuneful Sonata for unaccompanied violin.

There was fire and vehemence and Woroch’s playing was always full of life and purpose... This was a strong and poetic performance — Tim Homfray, The Strad.

The Cremona Quartet have received extraordinary critical acclaim for their Beethoven recordings and this evening offers a marvellous opportunity to hear them in three widely different masterpieces from the three stages of Beethoven’s career. The impassioned verve of the youthful quartet Op.18 No.4 leads through the mature classicism of the Serioso quartet to the visionary world of the late quartets, where Beethoven’s composition reaches an entirely new plane — music which astonished his contemporaries and continues to grip audiences today. The extraordinary slow movement of Op.132 is quite simply one of the finest musical utterances of all time.

I’ve been raving about this group since the German label Audite released the first volume in their Beethoven string quartet cycle. The Quartetto di Cremona is absolutely the full Mediterranean Monty with their big, open, attacking sound, robust and muscular projection, hyper-confidence of comprehension and delivery — The Herald.

Laura van der Heijden caused a major stir when she won BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2012 at the age of 15. Since then her career has developed at a rate of knots, including performances with several major orchestras and recently on television at the BAFTA awards. Haydn’s wonderful C major cello concerto is full of brilliance and charm, but with a real depth of sentiment at its heart. Van der Heijden is accompanied by the European Union Chamber Orchestra, who also perform much-loved works of music by Mozart and Elgar together with Respighi’s wonderfully evocative Ancient Airs and Dances.

These are magnificent performances (by the European Union Chamber Orchestra). This is the best disc of orchestral music by Mozart I have heard for several years — International Record Review 'Outstanding Award'.

Molotov Jukebox is an explosive London six-piece with a totally original, wonderfully colourful sound and style. Their unique Tropical-Gypsy-Dance sound has had hundreds of audiences across Europe and South America dancing, sweating, jumping and calling out for more. Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata is one of his most memorable chamber works, with its surface elegance and melodic beauty underpinned by deep underlying melancholy and pathos. Schumann’s music also combines romantic lyricism with wistful sadness. Along with his regular recital-partner Alexander Ullmann, the outstanding young cellist Michael Petrov will make this music brim over with energy.

Michael Petrov plays with the bravura and calm assurance of a long-established maestro. At his recent performance of Shostakovich’s 1st Cello Concerto at the Barbican Petrov dominated the orchestra effortlessly — The Daily Telegraph.

Alexander Ullman did remarkable things in the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1. He heard the score with immense clarity and vision, and brought it to life as if the composer were watching over his shoulder — Huffington Post, Montréal Symphony Orchestra.

A neglected masterpiece of the silent screen, performed with live musical accompaniment in Bath’s lovely art deco venue Komedia, originally built as a cinema. He Who Gets Slapped was the first feature made by MGM; a Hollywood take on a Russian play made by the legendary director Victor Sjöström and starring Lon Chaney, one of the legendary figures of silent cinema (The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, The Phantom Of The Opera).

The music is written and performed by Will Gregory — one half of electro-pop band Goldfrapp — in partnership with his long-term collaborator Tony Orrell. Will Gregory’s music blurs the boundaries of jazz, electronica and pop, and his live music and film events are intense and moving: his performance of Joan of Arc lifted the roof off Bath Abbey at the 2013 Bath Film Festival.

Will Gregory says: I think this ranks as one of the great cinematic performances in the history of film. Chaney exudes such presence and charisma that it is easy to understand why he was the most celebrated screen actor of his day.

A rare chance to hear what has been described in the Independent on Sunday as perhaps the greatest work in all British jazz. Born in London’s Soho in 1775, William Blake was regarded in his lifetime as politically dangerous; Blake is now acknowledged as one of the great visionaries in British art — and a figure whose work resonates powerfully in the 21st century.

With strong links to the West Country, Mike Westbrook is one of the leading figures in British music, working across a multitude of genres from opera to jazz. His settings of William Blake’s poetry, originally commissioned in 1971 for the National Theatre production of Adrian Mitchell’s Tyger, have been performed throughout Europe and in New York and Australia by a succession of Westbrook ensembles.

Award-winning chamber choir, Bath Camerata, has been entertaining audiences in and around Bath, across the UK and in Europe for over 28 years. Previous winners of the national Choir of the Year competition, they are renowned for their versatility, and will sing everything from mediaeval music, through Mozart to Flamenco, the Beatles and Jazz.

Scotland’s leading contemporary music ensemble returns to Bath to give a special performance of Renaissance and contemporary music for brass at Cleveland Pools, the UK’s only surviving Georgian lido. Sonorous Renaissance music is combined with contemporary music by Harvey and Birtwistle using spatial effects. The outstanding trumpeter Mark O’Keefe brings the programme to a climax with a performance of Jonathan Harvey’s Ricercare, with its overwhelming surround-sound beauty. Red Note were last seen in Bath as the band for Joanna MacGregor’s production of The Magic Flute in 2012.

Bath Spa University Brass Ensemble will play before the performance starts to welcome the audience to this atmospheric disused lido, sited between the River Avon and Kennet & Avon Canal.

Black Top, the duo of multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson and pianist Pat Thomas, was created in late 2011, dedicated to exploring the combination of live instruments and lo-fi technology. Their virtuoso, freely improvised performances combine twisted loops, samples and dub effects, drawing on their Afro-Caribbean roots with a spontaneity and daring rooted in the free-jazz experiments of New York loft-scene innovators such as Sam Rivers.

Black Top will be joined by harmonica player Philip Achille, who has been garnering wide spread critical acclaim & attention in both the classical and jazz arenas. They are joined by the Chinese multi-instrumentalist Beibei Wang (percussion) who has also been creating waves internationally.

They offer extraordinary variety, ranging from the sunshine of the E major concerto to the brooding anxiety of the concerto for oboe and violin, and from the spirit of dance in the A minor to the musical miracle that is the double violin concerto.

Sir Willard White’s portrayal of Porgy is justly famed. Joined by the superb Gweneth Ann Jeffers plus full chorus and orchestra, and paired with Dvorak’s evergreen New World symphony, offers a rousing conclusion to this year’s Festival.

Sir Willard White is one of the most versatile and most loved opera stars of the past 40 years. He has performed in the most prestigious opera houses and concert halls around the world, collaborating with conductors, directors and orchestras of the highest calibre. He was last seen at the Bath International Music Festival in 2011 in Robeson Re-Explored, which was rapturously received by a full capacity audience. Booking detailsYour tickets will be posted to you for a charge of £1 or free of charge if you include a stamped addressed envelope with your booking. Otherwise your tickets will be held for collection at the Box Office, or at the venue from one hour before the event. Booking by credit card either in person or by telephone incurs a £2 transaction charge. Booking by debit card either in person or by telephone incurs no charge. All online bookings incur a transaction charge of £1.

Concessions A concessionary discount of £1 per ticket is available to under 18s, full-time students, unemployment benefit claimants, those with a disability, and those whose sole source of income is a DSS pension. Only one concession may apply per ticket.

Please note W/C spaces and free carer tickets are not available to book online.

Weekday ticket offer Book any four weekday events in one transaction and receive a £1 discount off each ticket. This offer is not available online.

Young Persons ticket offer: £5 standby tickets Under 25’s and full-time students may purchase unsold tickets for £5 on the door 30 minutes before the event. Seat allocation is subject to availability and at the Box Office’s discretion.

Group bookings We offer one free seat for every ten purchased to the same event when booked at the same time.

Bath Festivals welcomes visitors with disabilities Please advise the Box Office of your requirements when making a booking. Access details can be found on page 43 (map page) or by visiting the Access Statement on our website bathfestivals.org.uk/accessibility. Visitors with a disability who need to bring a personal assistant are offered one free ticket. If you require a BSL interpreter, please enquire at the Box Office as soon as possible and we will do our best to accommodate this.

Other booking information Please quote the event code when booking. Event times are approximate and doors open 15 minutes before each event. Tickets are non-refundable, but if an event sells out we are happy to offer returned tickets for resale. A £2 per ticket handling charge will apply on all resold tickets. Please note that we cannot refund card transactions, postage or online booking fees. Programmes and performers may be subject to change. All information in this programme was correct at the time of going to press.

Filming Some events or shows may be filmed or photographed. Buying a ticket affirms your consent to the filming, sound recording or photographing of yourself as a member of the audience.
